I've always enjoyed the F14 even having the F16 and F15, it just felt so engaging for me in Sim so I mostly play/upload about it. The Cat does have alot of little tricks to make it work with you (more than for just a UA-cam comment lol) so here are some: -Other than launching missiles no need to be flying at mach 1.4 just stay ~420kt helps to maneuver if you need to defend and you don't waste fuel -Reset the radar, I do it very often. Turn it off and back on when youre having trouble detecting something. -This goes for any plane but practice FAST and PERFECT notches and when you get it dialed you'll have more confidence against ERs -Use ~27mins fuel with fuel tanks. By the time you may get into a dogfight you'll hopefully be at 22mins and that's a great amount Only fly in manual mode, no SAS it's worth getting used to The tomcat only gets boring if you play it safe. Got take risks don't worry so much about K/D. I took out the F14A vs aim120s when 11.7 fought 13.0 after the PD RWR change, just for the challenge, I'll upload the vid later
They actually weigh around 1000lbs, which is double your 250kg estimate, they’re silly massive lol AMRAAMs are pretty much what you said though, so it makes the mobility difference pretty clear. It’s like playing dodgeball with bowling balls when your opponent is using golf balls. If you hit them? Hospital But the hit chance isn’t great Congrats on the FreeGE sponsor
please please try using more narrow-scan TWS modes!!! most jets, even the old tomcat, have a more narrow TWS mode with a higher-bar up & down search pattern. this is meant as a way for you to basically TWS track a singular target or formation as they maneuver, change altitude or speed abruptly, etc. and it can be really effective at blotting out interference while also providing a higher-resolution track due to the faster sweep in narrow scan! furthermore the F-15C has the best example of one ive seen ingame thus far, its just a 15°x15° TWS box with a very high refresh rate on whoever you track within it. highly recommend getting used to using them, but be wary as you'll obviously become a bit more noticeable on their RWR with the faster ping rate!
Congratulations you finally learned a radar tactic that has been around since it was invented. Azimuth is different based on mode and aircraft, it's crazy ik
@@toxickilljoy9037 ive been doing it since TWS has been ingame genius. try to realize im giving advice, i havent just discovered something new and maybe try not to spill your spaghetti in a yt comment making assumptions about others, you should know what that makes of you.
@@blessthismessss You can't come on here begging for people on a direct comment to a Nimbal video to try your completely unprofound technique which applies to every radar mode in the entire game, and then get shitty when I sarcastically call you out on it. If you think I'm gonna be morally broken over your reaction to my sarcastic comment, I'm not
I use the F14 normally with 16-20 min fuel uns thrust around 103%. With 4 Aim54, 2 Aim9 and 2 Aim7. I fly it just bellow contrails and I fire 54s only when I am above Mach 1.1, when I realise that I'll enter a dogfight I drop the speed to around 900kp/h (~400mp/h), followed by sweeping the wings manually to the front (there is a setting for when U do that, that they'll stay so) and finally I activate the combat flaps. Then U just have to always follow his tail and stay around 650kp/h (~300mp/h ) to 900kp/h, when U are on the higher part between these speeds pull harder. All this can help more or less constant, depends on skill of enemy and a bit on the fuel and if U wanna drop Ur missiles if needed.
The fleet defense niche doesn't really exist in Air Sim. The Tomcat's biggest utility in real life was always in targeting bombers and barely-maneuvering targets at extended ranges. As it is, it's very draggy and very hard to maintain energy.
I’ve been flying the MiG 29 since the new br changes and from I can say is that it’s really easy to doge and counter the phoenix I mean you can see it coming from a mile away and it’s about as simple as turning and luring the F14 into Er range I hoped that the F14 would be a little more competitive in the be it’s at but honestly it’s quite underwhelming.
I usually take 4 sidewinders and 4 Phoenix. Fly above 20k feet above mach. Launch Phoenix at 25 miles away. Goes pitbull around 10 miles. When target defends, vid them take their 6 and fox 2. Basically use the Phoenix to push their nose away and set up a sidewinder shot or at least merge with a better position then them
I think SB top tier jets need a truly massive maps with AWACS and ground radar. A more realistic game mode where we can get the height and speed. Also more ground targets and more things to scout for rp.
The phoenix is definitely the most "Long Lance" missile we have currently in WT. Anything within 10km, I consider luck if it hits from how slow it accelerates. But, that motor lets get get pretty fast, even if it takes a while for that ~450kg missile to get there... Love em', but they ain't perfect
I never liked the f14, but if I d play it, I d play it the same way how i play red team at top tier: shoot when safe & try to always avoid dogfight, by running if necessary. This said I love the new BR bracket where you can play the old top tier with (almost) only fox1
I'll say it because your most usual opponent are MiG-29s and Yak-141s they have good enough RWR and their ER vastly outrange the 7F/M, sure you get the aim54 but in sim genereally very few people die to those missiles (at the least the sim games i've been in with 29A) also because at the tier USSR planes usually at max get 2 radar missiles so they have to resort to sneaky tactics and generally know more I'd say. Final argument is probably because a lot of F-14 players are new to sim which I won't blame them for.
I definetly think the f14b in an overall package, doesnt fall short, its extremely good. But i agree with all of your points about its draw backs or awkwardness to use. Even just using aim7f and aim9L its extremely good, bringing maybe 2 phoenixes is the max i would say for actually playing to kill enemies
Im a DCS player that roughly 3000 hours in the tomcat. The aim 54's have been broken for about 4 months in DCS and I haven't touched war thunder since 2013. My question is, are there maps that allow engagement distances of 60-80 miles? If not I really dont even see a reason to play the tomcat because it excels at the long range engagements. If I have to start with people closer than 30 miles from me.. the plane doesn't really work that way. Also does it only have two radar modes in war thunder? Can I differentiate between PSTT and PDSTT?
I played it the whole day. Only way to make it kinda work was around 5km alt and top speed launch for single targets at max 40km range, when I notice he’s turning due to my missile I hard lock him (feels like better tracking) and wait till missile gets pitbull. After that only prayers guide your missile to the kill
The Tomcat has afterburner stages. If you start at WEP/Full afterburner, set your throttle to your scroll wheel and scroll/throttle down one notch and you can set your afterburner to a secondary stage that burns way less fuel but still provides more than enough cruising thrust. Now you can set your fuel to more conservative amounts. You can also do it with a keyboard but you have to use the quickest, lightest tap on the key to achieve it unless you set the sliders for your throttle to something non-default.
Every plane with WEP has that. The F-14 isn't particularly special when it comes to that. Hell, even prop driven aircraft with WEP have it. They model full WEP as 110% throttle, so using your scroll wheel or similar is really setting your throttle to say, 102% throttle instead of 110%.
Your mention of the narrow scan bars developing into a massive issue in situational awareness is something I've noticed as well. Ironically, though it can feel massively unintuitive, I've found that a phoenix is actually weirdly good at tracking these high angle rate closure targets even as they pass beneath and past you, even following them through the loop out to rediculous ranges. ua-cam.com/video/SxH6797fmtQ/v-deo.html
Same thing with F-4S or any other US fox-2 slinger with pd radar. Dudes may dump all their chaff and lose all their energy trying to loose SARH lock but they're done anyway if its headon. On the other hand, you may be tracking a mf who's running spotify in the background, using a CIRCLE mouse-joystick overlay, hunting AI and don't give a fuck, then you give him a sparrow, and right then he decides to reset and go into another loop and whatnot and you lose the lock IMMEDIATELY once he's ever slightly perpendicular to your course. Which then ofc takes an eternity to cycle another radar scan/adjust the nose bc you mightve just lost the target outside of your 6-8°ish vertical scan/switch into ACM or HMS and then lock target directly. All that while some mirage or (god forsake) su-39 can simply fuckoff a high pull, high speed IRCCM fox-2 and continue on his way to dump bombs or else bc he just doesn't care. But mirages skimming at tree-top at mach 1.1+ with magic 2s are definitely the worst cancer of this mode ffs
All mig29 and su27 in wt have way worse maneuvering characteristics than they have irl. They loose literally 2-3 times more energy in most of their turns than they should
