Porsche 996 IMS, RMS and Clutch Inspection (Project 996 EP 05)

- Опубліковано 29 сер 2024
- It's Porsche 996 #IMS and #RMS inspection time. What will we find? Will we need to replace the RMS and/or the IMS? If so, this could add several THOUSAND dollars to our build budget.
In this video we continue from where we left off in the previous video where we removed the transmission from the 996. Here we need to remove the cracked bell housing from the transmission that's still attached to the engine. We also remove the clutch and fly-wheel to inspect the RMS and now infamous and dreaded IMS. Join us and check it out!
As ever, thanks so much for watching my videos and supporting my channel. Keep the comments and chat coming! More videos coming soon. Cheers!

My brother!!! Thank you so much for the support!!
🙌🙌🙌
Great job on the improved camera work (under the car) compared to the last video, but the German in me would DEFINITELY replace Clutch (of course I do NOT have to pay for it)...great job fellows, keep it up...
jvw1973 Agree, not sure that clutch plate would cost to much, pleased the flywheel is in good condition.
Good job Pat. Going well. Consider replacing the AOS while you have the trans out. it's much easier to get it now.
My day off , large coffee in bed and watching you guys enjoy yourselves. Such good editing / sound / camera work and as seeing is believing it’s fabulous to see the IMS and RMS solutions done. I’m loving this content as an ‘04 Boxster S driver this model would be about as far as I could stretch next car C4S my dream . I would buy a new clutch just for peace of mind as you dodged so many bullets and they’re not very expensive especially 1/3 rd shares . I’ve just watched a guy change the AOS on my car and it’s a pig to get at , is it easier on a 996 , and my water pump just sheered off so a new pump belt thermostat and coolant .you guys are cracking on in a good system getting the big jobs tackled first . As for your feet , everyone is avoiding a two hour big man crying video after a 10 mm spanner falls on you 😂. I’m teasing but safety first is good . Pat and Steve say for the love of god can we get a fan blowing across us at least or some a/c
Guys replace the clutch disk, it isn't expensive and a must do when you have the gear box off the car.
Hey guys, really enjoying the videos you have done to date on the 996 project. Looking forward (as I’m sure you guys are) to seeing the car finished and on the road driving. All the best to one and all.
Cheers Pete! 👍
Nice not having to replace all those expensive parts. More money for things like coilovers, etc. That's great news!!!
Cheers Tom!!
Great work Pat!!! Love to watch the progress.
You guys are having a great time!
Looking good so far chaps 👍👍
Maybe consider putting a short shift linkage kit in whilst you are working through the drivetrain?
Replacing the clutch will definitely encourage the next buyer to pay more and buy with confidence. Will also give you plenty of leeway to drive it hard over the next few years too
Approved ! Allready IMS solution installed 😁 will last the entire life span of the engine
Cheers Trond!!
Love the manual gear box Steve. No other way to own a 911. Great work guys.
Great work guys 👍
Cheers Clive!
Nice work guys!
Thanks Keith!
Another well produced, informative and easy to watch video. Just a pointer for a potential source of your oil seep. The crank case pinch bolts are usually replaced/updated as they have been known to allow oil to penetrate passed them. The new bolts come pre thread sealed. From memory I think there are four. Two inside the housing, above and below the cranks seal carrier.
Great suggestion! Thanks Karl!!
Great in-depth video of the work that is needed for a project like this...thanks again!!
Cheers!
Excellent synopsis of the process; I am enjoying this series. It's tempting to replace the clutch just because your in there and don't want to go back any time soon. But you must trust your SMEs.
Another great and entertaining video guys but please don't put that gear box back without changing the clutch ;-)
Another great video! Really loving this project. I’m living vicariously through Pat and Steve. And just like, James, I don’t even have to get my hands dirty!😂. Keep ‘em coming!
Ha!! Cheeky.
Auto Amateur all in good fun!!
I did try to leave this comment in your other vid but maybe you tube didn't like the slang i used for the transmission? Do you know others with your lift that have removed the gearbox ? The reason i ask is that it looks like your gearbox jack gets real close to the bar on your lift and that's with the bell housing out the way? Great vids , keep them coming.
I am hoping that some of the engine mount replacement makes it to video? I hear it’s an easy DIY? The term “EASY DIY” is subjective to many factors as you well know. Thanks go out to Pat for his reply to my previous comment. The future looks very bright for that Ol’ Girl. Take good care boys!
Glad to see that everything else was good. The flywheel has about 250 miles on it since it was installed and before transmission split. The IMS has about 750-1000 miles on it since it was done as well. 😁
So you didn't do both at the same time? So two different installers between ims and flywheel?
That flywheel looked a little rough. Are the teeth ground down at certain points or was I seeing things? I’m wondering if the case being cracked it created instability in the connection between the starter and flywheel before finally coming apart. It’ll never be easier or cheaper to replace it all of it now.
@@laurencegibbs3640 the flywheel was good when I had the IMS done. But when the starter went out and only kicked out half way it chewed up the flywheel and I had to replaced both.
@@Mack1364 teeth looked fine but it did look like it got scrapped from the transmission splitting. But overall the flywheel looked good.
Its Pinecone
Good deal. Thanks.
Great 996 content! Thanks! Subbed. Fellow Brit here in CT.
Cheers Jay!! 🤩
Thank you for setting a good example and being safe. Now how do we convince you to wear safety glasses? Imagine not being able to see you kids graduate...that's what it took for me to always wear them
Don't worry James is far enough behind the camera to be in any trouble :)
Awesome channel and content! Sub’ed from Norway!
Thanks you! Cheers!! 🤩🤩🤩
If the housing bolt(s) came loose causing the breakage then this is a fantastic example of the importance of factory spec torque values. I have to ask. Were you informed of this ailment prior to the purchase? Surely the seller was aware of it. Great vid. Now we are gettin into the meat and taters. Love it! Take good care guys.
Cheers Gary!! Yes, we knew about the transmission issue before we bought it.
Great job so far guys! Great news on the condition of the other parts.
Excellent videos
Cheers Paul!!
The clutch disk looks a bit damaged at the edges. The handful of clutches I've pulled out don't have fibers sticking out and rough spots at the edges like that.
Cheers mate!!
I have never seen a housing break to that extent without some form of extreme trauma. Could worn out engine mounts cause such a thing? If so then I am definitely replacing them on my 06.
It worries me why that housing broke in the first place.
We definitely will be doing engine mounts. A little bit of research pointed to bad mounts as one potential cause.
High five 🙃 great vid 👌
Thanks!! 🤩🙌
Just when I thought us Scots were the tight ones, you have two 911s get your wallet out and replace that clutch so it's nice and fresh.
My step-mum was 100% Scott, she must have rubbed off on me. HA!
Sorry for late question, but once you have the transmission out, how did you support the back of the engine? I want to do my IMS and leave engine in place. Thanks!
Good question!! We had a second transmission lift under the engine to hold it in place.
@@AutoAmateur Based on the video, it would be nice to be able to raise and lower with the transmission out. Did you see a way to temporarily secure the engine?
Would have appreciated seeing the stripped bolt removal.
Ah, yeah good one. We zipped through that in the time-delayed shot where you can see Pat using the hammer for a spilt second.
I don't know what you guys have for lunch while working, but I'd love to send you a couple of pizzas! Or at least a gift card for some!
Haaa!! Thanks mate!! 😆👍
@@AutoAmateur Got a PO box and a local take out joint that has gift cards?
@@Eatongee That's so very kind! We'll eat whatever it is you get us in the next video... :) 701 Washington Ave N
Ste 111-279, Minneapolis MN 55401, USA... Pizza Ranch or Jimmy John's...? Thanks so much!!
@@AutoAmateur Cool! Sent one this morning. Jimmy John's website wouldn't accept the address, so Pizza Ranch it is!
Ha! Thanks so much!!
what lift is that
Check out Toolots.com
just replace the clutch disc already, Not a budget killer.
you didnt show how to inspect the IMS...another 5 min wasted
Cheer up, misery guts. 🙄😂
