My name is Matthew and I live in a van. I lost my job due to "cut backs" from the pandemic of 2020 and decided to seriously restructure my life. I am also a single dad who needed to find a solution that would allow me to remain in my daughter's life and plan for her future. After tons of research into #vanlife, I knew it was for me.
From March 2021 until October 2021 I spent my days building out my Chevrolet Express 2500, which came to be known as "Lucky" and as of October 18, 2021 I have been living in Lucky full time.
The build was done with almost no experience on my end and I used the one incredible tool I had at my disposal - the internet - to learn what I needed to build Lucky into a very comfortable tiny home.
I have always had a bit of a passion for being in front of the camera and really enjoy capturing the world around us. This really played into how I was feeling after almost a year of working from home when I "commuted" from the bedroom to the couch. I was starting to feel extremely unhealthy, unmotivated and despondent. I HATED that, and that's not a word I like to throw around. This new lifestyle gives me opportunities I just didn't have before and I am so excited to be able to share it all with you.
I truly believe we all have the capabilities to turn our lives around, should we choose to do so - and if I can inspire you to shoot for something better then I have done a decent job and that will keep me going.
There is more to life than the consume, consume, spend, spend lifestyle I feel we have all been conditioned to follow and I just want to do the best I can for myself first and foremost. Our time is limited and I do not want to waste another second on a lifestyle that doesn't bring me joy!

I guess I will offer my unsolicited advice on caffeine for what it’s worth, I make my second pot of coffee for the day when I get home from work and at 11 o’clock at night I take the dog out for the last time for the day, I come in and I top off my cup of coffee, I take the last couple of swigs, rinse my cup out and go to bed. So I guess my advice is do what works for you because caffeine just moments before I go to bed doesn’t keep me awake. I’m usually asleep within three or four minutes of my head hitting the pillow. Anyway still loving the content. Can’t wait to see how lucky 2.0 turns out.

I just noticed when you use your snow brush to hold down the clutch so you can remote start Grace from the back, that the brush is holding down the clutch the entire time she's running. That's probably going to wear out her throw out bearings pretty quickly. You can install or wire in clutch bypass so you can start the car without having to have the clutch pedal pressed down. Given your experience and know how, I bet it'd be an easy project for you. All the best.

@@janet1744 I wasn’t meaning about the caffeine, it’s like going on a vacation from work. You leave that behind and take the time to enjoy your holiday. In Matthews case, brain break from Lucky’s build, filming, editing etc ☺️

I definitely find it best to sleep on top of my heated blanket. Then I use a sheet and extra warm blanket on top of me. Most of the time, I end up overheated. I do blame that on menopause, though. Lol.

Hi Matthew. I really enjoy your channel and humour. I cant believe at 70, ive started watching van dwellers and am doing a build of my own. You, and others like you have convinced me, that im not totally insane doing my own build.
My best friend is actually about the same age as you. He keeps telling me i should do a you tube channel.😂😂. A) if I'm not travelling, i don't think i would have anything to share. He says, i have a lot of life experience to share.
B) I see all your different types of shots+ music and figure it must take many hours to pit your videos together and i have never even made 1...just an old man rambling.

I'm kind of jealous of how ubiquitous A&W's are in Canada. They're far and few in between down here in the States. And the menu is very sparse in comparison.

I think the border is technically when you see the sign for Sparwood, but I suspect the "no mans land" might have someth8ing to do with mining rights. Thanks for the shout-out, I'm glad you have fond memories of the Elk Valley. That tunnel you drove through is known as the "weather tunnel" because it can be bone dry on one side and snowing/raining on the other. It's funny to hear you say Cranbrook is Smalltown BC because for me, Cranbrook is the City! It's all a matter of perspective. Great to see you, thanks for the video. Always a better day when I get to spend some of it with you.

I've also learned to avoid caffeine too late into the day. Likely something many of us discover as we get older. :) Gotta have my coffee though! At least decaf still tastes nice.
When you pulled into that rest stop and I saw the rock with the eyes, I immediately said that's Stella's rock then you said it on the video. Snap!!! Making beautiful memories with the Kitty Cats.. I wont lie I teared up just a little, still miss that furry little princess!!

.not good to sleep on an electric blanket. Use it on top and always cover it with another blanket to preserve the heat. Try it.

Two cents to perhaps help you sleep: Alcohol or sugar within 2 hrs of bedtime will help you get to sleep. BUT it will prevent you from getting to deep sleep and the full rest you need. Melatonin will help you get to sleep and you'll get the deep sleep you need. Best intentions. Oh ... the Stella Rock didn't have the face on it when she took her walk on it ;-)
I am so glad you were able to go around that storm and didn't get caught in it. I saw pictures and it was awful. Looking forward to the Van renos.

Love watching you travel on the same road we travel on many times a year from Lethbridge to cranbrook/radium/Vancouver…etc.
We also do tons of camping and ride our quads in the crowsnest pass.
You could find tons of spots in the pass to camp if you are ever interested .
There’s an inn on the border that’s 1/2 in Alberta and 1/2 in bc.
So just after island lake becomes BC.
Next time try a restaurant called the heidout in cranbrook and get their famous jaeger hunter schnitzel….amazing !!! Also they make their own beer !!
You drove right by it after the cranbrook downtown sign on the right.

Sorry, but your glasses looked so funny when they got crushed. My mom did the same with hers. She just got them also. Luckily, I was able to fix them, carefully bended them back, and they still worked for as long as she had them.🤓
Usually, the frames aren't as expensive as the lenses. You could always get new frames if they didn't stay together.

Just a quick note: I watch a lot of van lifers, and many of them store their knives on a magnetic strip! Two offhand--HannahLeeDuggan, and also MaddieTaylor. They seem happy with the arrangement. I'm sure it would work for you! Maddie does the magnetic spice jars too.
Maybe put the knives on the wall inside a cabinet where Brooklyn couldn't get into

You can order packs of "Pee-bags" that come in packs of 3 (I think). Each is resealable a n d can be used two or three times. They are lined with that powder that turns to gel when wet. Just tuck them.under the seat 4 emergencies. You never know when you'll be in a traffic jam. (That's what they were designed for).

Hmmmm, Matthew, I think you need to do a cool magnet exchange on your window blockers … instead of the suction cups. There are very small magnets that could be glued/sewn on to the window blockers. You wouldn’t want something too big because of having to fold them up.

One idea I had was to get those magnetic jewellery things that are always in thrift stores, and reuse the beads (it’s just a strand of beads that can wrap into a necklace or bracelet)

They are a bit pricey, but I'm curious to know how they compare to the cold shower wipes you're using.

Vanilla is the best flavor because besides it being awesome, it is soo versatile! I use powdered peanut butter... PB2 brand ONLY FYI, but you can also use any other flavoring as well... those squirt or powder water enhancers are good if you can hunt them down. especially if you can find any of the crush flavors for a creamsicle or float flavor. love adding rootbeer flavor for a rootbeer float shake!
