Love reading the comments here. I have yet to find someone outside of the internet who shares my love for this record. "Interim" is probably my favorite.
This came out while my father was away at the Vietnam War. Its a tribute to those left at home trying to hold their lives together with loved ones away
I feel privileged that the phenomenal music created by Jimmy Webb poetry-lyrics with Richard Harris interpretation-performance entered my life, as I sought my identity apart from the family that had brought me from birth to high school graduation. At 69, I still-and forever will-listen to many wonderful Webb-Harris songs and thank God for the creative genius of these two fellow sojourners.
Isn't he wonderful? I can't get over the fact that in his late teens-early twenties, he was brilliant enough to write, coach singers, arrange and produce as well as conduct and write for an entire orchestra. Astounding !
@@tigerpisces5506 It was always a huge regret that the third album never materialised, due principally to Richard Harris's film commitments always causing postponements to planned recording sessions. According to the UK-based fan club at that time, some sessions actually did take place and a few tracks were recorded, but I personally believed that such claims had no foundation and were made simply to keep the many fans happy who were constantly asking when the new album would appear. Nevertheless, Richard Harris spoke enthusiastically about it; in one press interview, he said it was to be a double album, with one track taking up the entire side of a disc. What an epic work it would have been.
"There was a frying pan. And she would cook their dreams while they were dreaming, and later she would send them out to play. And the yard went on forever." Wow.
Such a haunting, beautiful song...as a 15 year old at the time, limited by AM radio, I can't believe this wonderful creation made it on the air. It had an effect on me for decades, although I didn't "get" its meaning until much later. Yes, our world is fragile and mothers are mothers, no matter where they live.
The Yard Went on Forever is the Jimmy Webb/Richard Harris follow up to MacArthur Park. Two masterpiece albums. There is no better songsmith than Jimmy Webb.
And no-one performed his work better than Richard Harris. It was a most unlikely combining of talents, but what a success it was. I saw an interview with Jimmy Webb in which he said that in the months before Richard Harris died, there had been discussions about their getting together again. What might that have produced ? We can only wonder.
Some of the Thelma Houston songs are great (if over produced) and 'The Animals Christmas' is bloody brilliant. The first solo album is good but after that.....the same old covers over and over...
I think too many of our generation was guilty of tunnel vision andonly seemed to have an ear for rock music to thee exclusion of the beauty of this allbum and its predecessor. Such a shame. I am glad I have alway been encouraged by my mom to appreciate all kinds of music. I saw an interview with Al Kooper who said his erecord collection was vast and unlimmited in its scope. John Lennon said he even liked elevator music. Thanks, Mom, for giving me the spirit to love this kind of music too. This kind of music made me dream and led me out of the ghetto. Thank you Jimmy Webb!
I always wondered what the children were singing and I finally found out. It's latin: "From our profound depth we clamor to thee, oh Lord....grant us peace" "De profundis clamavi ad te Domine, donae nobis pacem."
Thank you!!!! I found this out once, but never wrote it down. For decades, I thought it was Japanese schoolchildren singing about the bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Thanks for commenting .. But I'd like to know what you actually meant . Is the song so beautiful and awesome that it is like heaven when listening to it ?
The lead-in to possibly one of the best albumns ever made. The whole effort was prophetic..Just look at 2020 America. While the faces will change, the lines will invaribly remain the same...That is until ~~~ Rock on
I've loved this song since hearing it as a teenager. And yes you're right. Look at America in 2020, and now 2023. Prophetic still, and onward. Nevertheless, cheers from Cincinnati ! 😉👍
That is so sweet Sheena. Thank you this much. We are all in this together, so my dear, many cheers from Bellevue, Ne. Btw, I Have loved this album since like forever. The big 7-3 and if I owned a bar, I definitely would have to card you. Upward and Onward.....Rock On Sheena, I am with you

I love the whole album, it’s better than MacArthur Park. It definitely deserves to be better-known.
Richard Harris has an authenticity in his voice that does Jimmy Webb's songs justice.

Jimmy Mozart Webb will finally be recognized as the true genius he is probably in 100 years or so

Me too
My favorite albums were sung by Richard Harris and written by Jimmy Webb.
My friend John, hit the big 7-0 in March and will love both Mr. Harris and Mr. Webb. You and i will both be listening

REQUIRED LISTENING: ALL IS NEEDED IS EARS TO LISTEN, AND A HEART TO UNDERSTAND.
And I will never stop exclaiming this
Roof top cat: I couldn't put it any better.your statement was short, but precise.as simple as that.
If only more people would listen.

Love this song. Listening in 2020.

The whole album is an integrated whole and cross refers (musically / lyrically / rhythmically) throughout....a masterpiece and much overlooked.

An absolute classic. Probably his best song. It never stops to move me.
I agree, such a phenomenal concept!
I can't believe I found it!
@@kimburke1924 Likewise. I can still find new elements in it, despite the many times I have heard it.
A true gift to all willing to listen.
I always wondered what the children were singing and I finally found out. It's latin: "From our profound depth we clamor to thee, oh Lord....grant us peace" "De profundis clamavi ad te Domine, donae nobis pacem."
Many vocal works have been generated from that quote.

T.K., got any other examples?
thanks for letting us know.. Jimmy Webb is real genius
THANK YOU!
Hal Blaine's jazzy drumming during the driving instrumental part is great. I don't think I ever noticed it until now.
Amazing piece of music
We are the lucky few, kind of like seeing Heaven before we die

magnificent song- beautiful visuals- thank you
OMG! Those church photos are INSANE! Thanx for sharing them with the rest of the class :-)
It only took me 50 years to figure out what the 15 boy choir was saying!!
1968- @#64 U.S. BILLBOARD HOT 100 CHART.
1968 release not 1970
This ...uh...song was released in late 1968. Sorry Bud, about that 1970 mistake.
This is among some of the worst, non sensical, depressing music ever made. Banned from elevators and waiting rooms.
It wasn't written for elevators or waiting rooms. It was written for concert halls.
