Thanks for this video. My husband had a nephrostomy at Hospital Auxilio Mutuo here in San Juan, Puerto Rico and NO ONE has explained any of this to us. No one. The service here is so poor and mediocre. Thanks to UA-cam and thanks again to you.

OMG I so badly wish I had this information when I had mine, it looks like I'm gonna need another one. I just wish there was more health care professionals like you as dedicated, seriously thank you to the moon and back for this video!!! It's life changing for me. I'm in the UK and we worship the NHS here but I can tell you, they're over worked and "right it's in byeee" with no information, it's scary.

Thanks for the video! :) I was wondering, if there is a blood clot in the line and you flush it to get rid of it, does the blood clot go to the kidneys? Is it dangerous? Or does the blood clot dissolve after flushing?

Pushing non sterile water into your kidney seems a good way to get an infection. Why not use sterile prefilled syringes?

How long should your incision site leak after removal of the tube? And what if it is leaking A LOT? 24 hours after removal, I still have to change my gauze every 1-2 hours or my shirt is soaked.

Some nephrostomy colostomy bags have something like a tiny stopcock near the connector and the district nurses don't know to turn it on.

    • @Sea-cucumber1151

Nephrostomy and colostomy bags are so different, speaking of nephrostomy tubes the thing we were taught was using the stop cock turned toward the kidney to flush the lower line into the bag where most of the problems are, I would never flush open air water in toward the kidneys.
They can prescribe prefilled sterile syringes with the instruction to use alcohol on the opening prior to inserting the syringes. It baffles me just using water, he is said water, not sterile water or if i missed that part and it was sterile it has been exposed to dust, dust mites, bacteria in the air landing in that water prior to injecting into his body! Did he say a new sterile empty syringe?
Ugh jo way! My 84 yr old mom has one temporarily and no way in hell would I infuse that water like he has without alcohol on the insert (quickly allowing the alcohol to dry because that is how it disinfects). We use sterile prefilled syringes with alcohol to clean the tip on the stopcock.

Thank you for these videos. My husband has recently had nephrostomy tubes from both kidneys put in, which we expect he will need for at least several months. I flush them for him once a day with saline solution as instructed by his medical team. Question: 1) Do we need to clean the urine collection bags? How and how often? 2) The tubing uses red plug caps which I remove to attach the saline syringe. Can we continue to use the same pair of caps as long as I clean them each day with alcohol prep pads? (I do not recall if the medical team addressed those issues.)

There is no need to clean the collection bags. Yes, you can continue to use the same caps, just be sure to clean them with alcohol prep pads. Also Johns Hopkins hospital instructed me to keep the site where the tubes go in totally dry. They make a cover that goes over the site for showering. They are called Aqua Guard. My insurance company connected me with a supplier of all my medical supplies.

I recently had a nephostomy ... they said in no way should I take a shower!! Why so many different ways? Confused. It's been in for 9 days and taking a sponge bath just isn't working for me.

I can't see my connection, where bag's catheter connects to kidney catheter. It's very close to my back. So, I can't do it myself since I can't see it nor grasp it. She may also need help, and it's nothing to be bothered by. Maybe a friend, relative or neighbor would be willing to help. They can watch this video.. Mine has become clogged a couple times. My Mom has to do it, but she uses sterile gentamycin/saline. Apparently 5 or 10cc is the best amount.

Nursing 101: Never place a bag (Nephrostomy or Foley) on the floor. The floor is dirty, bacteria climbs, and the hole in your body will let the bacteria in.

My brother has had this in place for a few months. He got no instructions on how to care for this AT all. I've been cleaning the dressing but never knew we had to flush this or replace anything. I'm freaking out now because he did not know and not one Dr ever told him to flush this. It's not draining on one side and they never seemed concerned with this. I'm going to go get supplies to do this flush it. But I'm scared. But it needs to be done.

The same happened to us. My husband had a nephrostomy and no one EVER gave us instructions on how to care for it. Much less, how to flush it.

I have several thing with noticed-
There isn’t mention of hand hygiene or prevention of pulling the tube?
You say use water/ that’s not sterile.
A nephrostomy often has a 3 way stopcock so you would not need to disconnect and risk exposure to pathogens
Most sources say 3-5 ml of saline- less than half of what you suggested
Most sources say to keep the site clean and dry to avoid infection- kidneys are a direct route to the bloodstream so I think it’s valid to ask why this is the first place I’ve seen it suggested to shower and get it wet and soapy, leaving the bag lying on the floor.
So do you have anything to share that shows the evidence for what you recommend?
It’s so different from other sources, if really like to know where you developed your practice.
    Thanks!
