Does it matter how big the beads are?

Yes, don't go for very large beads, I would go with 6mm for the head bead and then go for 4mm for the other beads, getting smaller as you get nearer to the bobbin. Definately don't go with anthing that hangs down as these will get caught up when you make a sewing.
