  • This is an amazing video. Watch it!!
I spent 2 weeks learning from the amazing Master Yun Sae Gwan - what a privilege!
In October 2006, after months of investigation and searching, I met Master Yun Sae Gwan in Gwangju in a Coffee-shop. I had seen his amazing videos and wanted to feel his Hapkido in person. What I experienced in that coffee shop made me return a year later to train with him for 2 weeks in Gwangju at his student's Dojang. Master Yun Sae Gwan has a unique approach to self-defence and joint locks that requires no 'magic' - he has worked out great use of small circles, angles and grips that produce immense leverage and create instant pain in the attacker. He is a true master and has created a unique, well though-out approach to joint locks and throws against real attacks. This video catalogues some of his more basic techniques and highlights the principles on which his more advanced techniques are based. Pay attention to his footwork and body positioning - when he does it in real-time you can feel it would cause instant damage to joints, tendons and bones. This video is a gift to the Hapkido community who I hope will recognise the brilliance of this unique and very innovative Hapkido Master.

Great Grand Master Yun (1st Generation of HKD) who brought HKD to GwangJu and Jeolla Province for the first time.
GwangJu HAPKIDO which is mostly BongMuGwan style is started by GM Yun.
My master GM Cho was in charge of 1 of Kwan that belonged to BongMuKwan style. (Han-sung BongMuKwan)
Since there are many HAPKIDO Federations now.
It is hard to see the name of BongMuKwan in GwangJu but all HAPKIDO 'Kwan's are associated to BongMuKwan style in GwangJu and Jeolla Province.
In cluding myself currently running Kwan in Shanghai, China.
GM Yun has already passed away long time ago.
He made an amazing legacy to future generation.
It is really amazing sir you had a chance to meet and get a lesson from him.
I never met him in my life even i am from GwangJu.
    RIP GM Yun.

Do you have any information about GM Yun's lineage (who taught him?) and why it is so different to the more popular versions of Hapkido (GM Jae and others of the Hapkiyusul line)?

Thanks for the comment - it was very difficult to find him for this training - I had to find someone who know someone - who knew someone. Everyone knows him in Gwangju - but not sure if he is still alive - he was not well even at the time of this filming - and that was 12 years ago.

    Sophisticated but very effective Hapkido.

Yes - it was extremely effective - pain like I have never seen before and nowhere to escape. The smaller circles and rapid footwork make his techniques very realistic. I would not show junior belts as they come on very fast and can be very damaging to the training partner if done quickly.
