- Hello everyone and welcome back to Inside Arsenal where I'm joined as always by James Benge of CBS Sports for this week's Extra-time show.
In this week's show we discuss England's semi-final win at the Euros and look what reaching the final could mean for Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka in terms of Arsenal's start to the new Premier League season. We also discuss Fabio Vieira's future, the current state of the transfer window and how young players are becoming more prominent within the game.

Personally I think Dembele is useless, there's no point having a winger with no end product. Normally failed wingers like Dembele become fullbacks but even Fullbacks have better end product, it's wild.

Well said, Ben. I have been saying the rules in today's football are making it very hard for defenders to defend and at the same time give lots of advantages to the attackers. It's so unfair that a defender can't move his or her hand in natural motion to jump or tackle before sanctioned.
Hey Charles, well wishes from South Africa. I have found it quite interesting that a lot of people outside of Arsenal have said that Declan Rice has been terrible. That he doesn't pass forward, keeps it too safe and at times hamstrings the team. In my opinion, for England, Rice is the screw that if you take out falls apart, but doesn't look like it does much. He is absolutely crucial. Thoughts?
Definitely, he has been playing so well and consistent for England not just arsenal, he's arguably been out best player along with mainoo and saka
@@RC-nv6rc - see I agree with that. That's what I've seen game on game. Besides his "mistake" to lose the ball to Xavi Simons, he's been really good I think. However, I've listened to Gary Lineker on his pod and Gary Neville on his, and both have said that he's not giving England enough in the 6 position.
Rice was part of a defence that held the Netherlands to one early goal.

Rice is the glue that England don’t even know they have. Take him out this team and it’s over. He covers so many positions especially with Southgate trying to fit that many attackers on the pitch just leaves so much space behind and Rice is covering that space.

I wonder what the club will be promising Obi-Martin to get him to stay, it's clear that MA and Edu recognise he's possibly another one in a million talent and want him to stay, so the offer will be in line with that.

Tell Eduardo and Ramsey that studs up tackles are perfectly fine.
Dumfries jumped into a high, studs up tackle. That's been a foul since I was born in 1983 and its normally a red card to jump into a high studs up challenge.
The big thing I've seen argued is that the shot action still completed and because of that it didn't affect the play and shouldn't be given as a pen.
As if that's what is required for something to be a pen or not to be a pen. If the ball was never close to either of them so there's no shot action and the tackle happened the same way it would be even more of a pen than it was.
Only argument I've seen that kinda makes sense is that it's a rarely given pen but just because it's rare doesn't mean it isn't a pen.
Guys speak for yourselves.....Fabio Vieira is far from forgotten in my mind.
His performances last season imprinted on my mind. The assist for Nketiah (even better than the one Odegaard laid for Havertz) can not be brushed aside. He needs to stay and keep fit. Vieira can play anywhere, I would not pigeonhole him to one position. His technical ability is up there with anyone in that team. He is one of the few guys we have in the team who can produce something out of nothing be it a goal from outside the box or an assist.
He is still only 24 and a player like Wanyeri is not whom I would replace him in the squad with. I get the clamour for an academy player to be the next Saka but I would prefer Fabio in a Champions League game.
PS: Preseason tour has not even started. I would not worry about transfers in. As long as the right people come in. That is the most important thing imo.
Fabio Vieira is also embedded in my mind, for being useless. He offers Arsenal nothing. He once played very well for 15 minutes against Oxford in FA cup. ESR is a much, much better prospect.

We don't believe that Arteta will use the subs or play young players because he hasn't done it to date. I'm talking about meaningful minutes not five minutes at the end of the game.
I'm not a big fan of Vieira and I see Nwaneri more of a natural replacement. Vieira is tissue paper and Nwaneri is physically stronger and more suited to the prem. Loan him or sell him.
Hello Charles, I love the show. In regards of Arteta as coach he needs to use his entire squad, if you have ESR, Nelson Or Viera you have to find away to play these more especially at home. One thing I know about a coach they can either give you confidence or they can kill your confidence. For those guys I just mentioned Arteta have killed their confidence on how he decide to use them. Pep used his entire squad why Arteta refused to do so, that what Arteta have to work on as a manager in order to him to be great.

They were given opportunities the team has outgrown them. Arteta sees their performance in training so it's not a coincidence that they are not playing.

With Rice I think would be ok to give him 3 weeks off no? He doesn’t need to go on tour with the squad… then a week back with the team before wolves. I think Rice would be fine.
Hey Charles. I actually don’t think Arteta is pro giving young players games. ESR got game time because Arteta had to, not wanted to. I never had a feeling Aretha likes Nelson or Eddie either. Saka is generational talent, but Pepe didn’t give him a hard fight for the starting 11 spot either. If I recall correctly Saliba played because there was an injury I think.
I think Arteta will play kids when he HAS to, but he’s not a pro young player coach in my opinion. I think that’s why some of our youngsters are more willing to leave

The players thought it was a penalty. As soon as the foul was committed Saka raced to the Referee calling for the Penalty
Afternoon everyone…. We needed cover for Bukayo and another 6 or 8 to augment our midfield even before England getting to the final, it’s even more important now… we cannot keep relying on those two never getting injured either
Doesn't matter if he can't stay fit and can't deal with the physicality of the Premier League. He needs to show something this season and warrant a place in this squad. Otherwise move him on. This will be his third season at the club and he's not done enough yet.
The more reason Partey must stay another 1 season.
Do you think the slow start to signings might be a tactical decision by Edu to help with sales? Telling clubs that we might keep players unless we get good money is a lot easier if you havent already bought their replacement

Damfries boot was high and I can clearly say it was a penalty. He was lucky not to get a red card. Such a tackle can cost Harry Kane his career.
That was a blatant penalty I don't what fans are smoking!!! He didn't try to block like normal, he Sparta kicked with studs showing, that type of kick is even banned in the UFC as you can break people's legs and end careers

That type of foul is given , most often, anywhere else on the field though. So a penalty I reckon.

I think that we are so used to seeing fouls after a shot not given, or even considered, that it's influenced what we think is correct. The 1st post you talked got it bang on correct- studs up, especially with contact, is a foul anywhere on the pitch.
Hi Charles, any updates on the German player we were linked to? Sounded quite serious at the time but heard nothing since which is strange considering Germany got knocked out of the euros a while ago now?
Not many young players have the wear and tear on their body after a long season as their minutes are limited. It is the worry that Saka has so many minutes.
So many minutes for about 3 seasons in a row. I read a stat that he has played half as many minutes in his short career as Gary Neville did in his entire career - which if accurate, is mental

I am 40 years old and I'm 6ft3, 120kg, 8% bodyfat. I'm a body/powerlifter and a Strength and conditioning coach/PT.
I train 7 days a week 365 days a year, my sessions can last up to 2 hours and I'm only happy when sweat is dripping into my eyes. I get no muscular injuries, or any injuries at all from my training load. I will also do a week of double splits thats when I do a session in the morning and then 8 hours later do another session, that will last a week and I usually do that once every month or 2.
I'm doing the equivalent of playing a football match every single day, I've been doing it for years and I never feel tired or fatigued, In fact I feel great 😅
Maybe It's because I hit the genetic lottery but I always struggle to see how the players suffer from so much fatigue when they are going hard once a week for 90mins. I've been to the training I've sent the work they do outside and in the gym and it baffles me that I do more than them and I'm supposed to be an old man...

Dembele awakened France. Direct and can't underestimate what this does to defenses. Yes, end product at times but you have to have someone that pushes beyond working side to side around the park. That's why Eze is a good option at 8.
I don't think Rice and Saka will start the first 2-3 games in the premier league because they need rest as the EPL is long run which will be until May. I am surprised you guys couldn't see this and I am sure he will not start against Wolves. If Partey and Gorgino are not injured and plays the pre-season games then they will be the ones to start the first 2-3 games and Rice comes on the last 20-15 minuttes. Arteta needs to sign new midfield anyway so that will also help
With a fully available squad, I'd be tempted to rest Saka and Rice until after Sept International break. It will be a long season and they will be spent for the run in if not given a proper rest

I’m sorry James, but I couldn’t disagree with you more regarding Harry Kane. You say that England aren’t Spurs or Bayern because we don’t have players that can run in behind. That’s just completely not true!
Gordon hasn’t had a sniff in this competition but is the perfect outlet on the left-hand side. not to mention the glaring omissions of runners like Rashford and sterling.
Surely the player who has been top scorer in Europe this season and has broken almost every record possible in English national team football is a player you should build the team around.
Harry has always played this way, and there is no coincidence that it only becomes a problem when Southgate tries to shoehorn in other players in the middle like Foden, who can only play with the ball to feet!
Drop Foden for Gordon, and watch Kane thrive!

Don't know what you're watching. After going behind we were excellent. 2nd half abysmal. Kane Trippier Mainoo should have been off after 55 mins and we'd have comfortably won it. Southgate again got lucky. Do that v Spain we'll be 2 or 3 down after 25 minutes

Eh? Say someone makes a tackle, misses the ball, then the other players momentum causes their foot to catch the tackling players leg and they trip. That is always a foul right? If a defender misses the ball and then contacts the other player after they have passed/shot the ball, are you saying that isn't a foul? Then, in the actual rules of the game- not uneducated opinion, if you make contact with your studs up, it's given as a foul 100% of the time- no question at all. Unlucky for the defender, but in the rules it's a foul resulting in a direct free kick.

It is irrelevant if Kane got the shot off or not. Studs were up, that is considered dangerous play. Red or Yellow, and/or a penalty. The penalty was given.
Therefore Wright was correct when he said, if it had been any where else on the pitch, a foul would have been given.
Kane ( who is killing the team) was fouled by a dangerous tackle and the ball was not dead at the time, so the penalty was correct.
A foul inside the penalty area, is by definition, a penalty.
Kane should've been dropped for this tournament, Toney plays much more positive football and have Watkins as sub. Also if no choice but to keep kane then he should be playing 2 strikers as everyone is playing with 3 CBs, kane and Toney partnership would be awesome it would be like bergkamp and henry

Hi Charles, a hypothetical thought with a giant caveat to it - I think that Arsenal could do a lot worse than taking a gamble on taking Kalvin Phillips off of City’s hands. Not to start of course, but as a good squad member. We have seen on many times with England that he and Rice have a very good understanding of each other and play well together. I don’t think it would be crazy, or too expensive given how badly it’s gone for him at city and them wanting rid, for Arsenal to buy him. A potentially low risk and low cost gamble with a pretty high pay off if he settled and regained some of that old form for Leeds and England. And again, a great backup option, who has a real understanding with Rice. Unlikely to happen, but think it’s at least worth a conversation. Any thoughts?
Vieira's start to last season was pretty good, he set up a few big goals right at the start and then he got himself a red card and was never seen again lol

I disagree with you and James on your Vieira take I think he has an important part to play this season. We are over reliant in Martin and vieira is the closest approximation
as you and james pointed out last seasonnhevstarted out pretty well and I think there will be plenty of minutes to go around this season especially with 2 extra UCL games league cup. Like ESR, mikelnrefuses to use fabio for his own reasons but against luton in April he looked very good.
I think fabio should stay and not go on loan and will get the required minutes because we have been relatively injury free in the forward line aside jesus. And we will need him in sure.
Also if saka doesn't start day 1 I think we have more than enough cover we have seen Martinelli at RW last day of last season against Everton and also vieira could cover
