How to Make Rope from Plastic Bottles

  • I show how to make a simple device that cuts plastic bottles into a thin band/ribbon that can be used as a durable rope. The plastic bottle cutter is very easy to make and perfect for reusing plastic bottles and turning them into useful plastic rope/string. Multiple strands can be woven together to make the rope even stronger. The plastic rope can then be melted down for a permanent hold. The cutter is made by attaching two bolts onto a piece of wood, adding about 6 washers onto each bolt. Then a blade is placed in-between the washers at the height you want the width of the plastic rope to be.

    The blade and washers are tightened in place with two nuts. To start cutting a bottle the bottom of the bottle is cut off as straight as possible. A part of the bottom is then cut at a slight angle and this piece is placed under the blade secured by the washers. The part under the blade is pulled while pressure is being applied to the top of the bottle. The bottle should start spinning as you pull the thin band of plastic creating the plastic rope. Pressure is applied to the bottle so that it keeps the band a consistent size and prevents it from breaking off. The plastic rope has many practical applications and can be used for anything that would require a durable rope.

    I make art from drink bottles and this is a HUGE improvement to the way I do things. And thanks for saving me the money I was about to spend on a Kickstarter project that's a hand held version of this simple idea. Thank you!!!

    Pro Tip: Drill the larger holes first. Keeps you from grabbing the wood and tearing through. plus the bit shape auto-locates the smaller drill.

    just a suggestion, turn you blade facing the other direction and mount a spool vertically at the other end of the board with a hand crank. then when you pull the plastic through it winds up instead of piling up. great vid, much easier than a lot of the plastic rope cutter vids out there.

    One of the most effective plastic ribbon cutter that I've seen on YT! And certainly simple enough to make. TFS! Really well done tutorial. I actually have no questions how to make this great tool for plastic ribbon making.
    That blue bottle and the green bottle would be pretty woven together.

      a tiny one though because the lenght may seems long but a basket requires longer lenght and it's not easy to wield at all two ropes without being it obviously molten, visually

    You know the tops with the lid, you left over, well if you pass the top of a plastic bag through, once it's filled it acts as a closing, just screw the lid back on over the plastic bag.

    • @666neoselen
      @666neoselen Рік тому

      check for "petamentor" if you want to transform this plastic rope into a plastic filament. you'll need a heating element and other parts they tell.
      most of people who do that use a heating block from a 3D printer parts seller. you'll need to get higher temperature than for PLA, normally you'll find the exact infos on youtube among other sites like thingiverse & stuff.
      happy printing !

    imaket it best is easy drill hole on wood that feet you bearings (yeha het some skate bearigs) and washers same size. the bearings of the botthom need to get totaly on wood whit no whashers ad whashers to adjust size then littlel thimwhashers to keep the blade away from the rotation of bearings(like routher bits) ad more bearins at the top and bolt it.
    ig you are om the serius scrsp rope busines hahaha you migth whant to ad a themsion road for the botle didnt play aroumd and put a wheigth on the top for comfort
    then use the string to hang people askimg what you gona do whit the string so you can awnser "hang people" sheers
