Seen Matt multiple times, each at small venues with 200-400 attending. Almost all of them guitar nerds and their wives or dates. It’s a modest living at best and I respect their dedication to craft and empathize with their sense of loss. The pandemic is a tragic disruption of the economic model of live touring. There’s no virtual substitute for the power of Matt or Josh at 110db on stage with the energy of the crowd and their band pushing them. I continue to purchase each one of their TrueFire courses and parse each lesson like it was the Rosetta Stone, hoping it keeps them going until I can buy their show tickets again.

Matt Schofield is a great musician and great guy. I was so lucky to see him live here’s in Italy not a long ago. The stuff he has on Truefire is the most inspring and learning materials I have ever found. Always interesting to listen to these two guys even when they are not playing.

Love you guys. I got a 3/4 nylon string when I was eight and lived in the UK age 12 to 16, 1964 to 68. Going to the music room at school and learning those beautiful songs by ear with friends. I’m 70 now with a strat and a keyboard doing 60s music gigs for the first time ever and learning a lot from you two amazing people. Thanks!

I can see why these like/respect each other. Both tasty/soulful players with great sense of blues history in their playing yet each brings something new & unique to the genre. To boot each guy is influenced by different styles adding extra magic to their playing. 🙏🎸🎶

I'm younger than you guys, 32, but I feel fortunate to have caught somewhat of a tail end of what you talk about often in these interviews, Josh. I remember I had an uncle show me a 12 bar in Bflat when I was 12, he was a great player, then I got into Hendrix and Jeff Beck. A year into playing started a band and playing the school shows, my uncle occasionally let me strum some chords on an acoustic with his trio (more or less to engage me, and it worked!) And that was it, I was hooked. Learned from being in bands and playing with people. It wasn't until years later that I got into theory etc, but by then playing live, improvising and learning how to hang had already been ingrained. It really is something how much the world has shifted, especially now. Playing live is really the best way to learn, it's an irreplaceable education. Love these interviews and stories

I love this. I most definitely steal your licks but will never sound like you two. Simply because you are monsters of improvisational blues. And you guys are icons to all the rest of us blues lovers. All we can do to support you now besides letting you know how crucial you are to our inspiration is to buy your courses and music.

Great to hear your comments about BB! When I tell people the same thing, they look at me incredulous. Also, I think the shift to everyone wanting to sound the same was due to the Blues Police and the need for validation by musicians who didn't look like they grew up on the plantation. Excellent interview! I love what both of you do!

Thanks guys , great interview Josh ...totally get where you both come from . Great to hear Matt’s story having enjoyed his music for a long time now . Anything but Time is a particularly cool track . Always recommend my guitar students to listen to both of you . All the best to you both , rock on Gary x ps ....I was pre cassette age and I learned by jamming with records ...remember wanting to learn the solo to whisky in the jar by Thin Lizzy . Had to go and buy a second copy of the 45 vinyl as I wore out the part where the solo came in with the needle !! Great times .

Thank you Josh for bringing Matt on and exposing him to more people. Go ahead and rant away. I'd much rather listen to you and Matt than 20 of the blues preservationists. Up here in the bay area, especially in the south bay we used to have a going modern blues community. You could book a night at JJ's Blues, call on any number of local sidemen, and call out any Barney Steel's era Ford arrangement and folks would know it. Then JJ's got sold, JW moved to Vegas and the preservationists moved in. Suddenly if you played a b5 with an overdrive (never mind a fuzz) you weren't blues on their blues-not blues scale. I've managed to get some folks to learn a couple 12 barish Joey Landreth tunes but there's still resistance. A few times I've been at a jam Steve Evans plays and we've started noodling Matt's Where Do I Have To Stand but nobody else knows it or is going to bother with it. Kevin Hayes swung by one night and I kept thinking if only we could get a song or two, we could pull out some Matt tunes and show folks something fresh and interesting. Like we used to do 20 years ago with Robben tunes. Maybe someday the pendulum will swing back again and you guys will get your just recognition.
I loved Matt's story about the music teacher who supported him. I took a music theory class one year in H.S. My bass player friend and I played Hendrix's Woodstock Am jam for the performance piece. The teacher pointed to us and said "You're making that up as you go along". But at the end of the year she gave everybody an A. She said she wanted to support any musical aspirations we had.
