Under an Arctic Sky - Behind the Scenes

- Before Under An Arctic Sky was even an idea or a film it was a love affair with surfing in cold water. Over the last decade Chris Burkard (Director &) Ben Weiland (DP) traveled across the globe seeking out waves in some of the coldest and most remote conditions on the planet. Why would anyone ever want to surf in cold water one might ask? Simple.. to thrust ourselves out of the safe and the routine, the familiar and known, and to hopefully create a space where the unknown can occur. Under an Arctic Sky was this unknown.
We endured the largest storm Iceland had seen in 25 years and we began to question whether this trip was doomed for failure from the start… There were so many moments while filming for where we should have called it quits. Like when our car got stuck in an avalanche, Renan Ozturk got 25 stitches from a drone or when the surfers had ice forming around their wetsuit while surfing at 1 am in the Arctic Circle. The best projects always require you to suffer a little bit, and that is exactly what we did.

Looking back at age 69, I realize I spent most of my life staying safe. Thanks so much for sharing your amazing adventures, so even old ladies like me can live vicariously! Please don't take any unnecessary risks, though. The world needs more people like you. May God bless you and keep you safe and strong.
I think of this film nearly every time I suit up and jump in the cold water to surf in the ice. So inspiring.
Wow, you've created a new genre -- extreme photography
Amazing and so inspiring!
The effort you guys put in made all the difference. From what could have been a failed trip to absolute triumph, well done!!
8:55 I can feel that moment, as most of other photographers & videographers. Awesome!
The shots with the northern light and the surfers is the most epic scenery I have ever witnessed. Holy moly
Wow. Goosebumps.... really glad your pumping out content on UA-cam lately, Chris.

This is incredible. Fantastic team effort. Thank you and your team for showing us what passion is about and what can it get you!
Great film man, really enjoyed it. It's awesome how there's still humble people like you in this world. Your passion and uncertainty of danger combined truly creates a work of art. Under An Arctic Sky is a great example of the work of art that a group of passionate people can make. Hope to continue seeing films like that. 🌊🤙
Goodness. It's hard to put words to how amazing, inspiring, and empowering this is.
Ive watched Under the Artic Sky so many times. Its such an inspiring film!!!! Thanks so much for making it guys. I am from Southern Aus and our sort of cold water surfing rocks, cant wait to surf Iceland!!!!!

Absolutely loved the film, watched it a number of times now and always in awe of the landscape, northern lights and the remoteness!
Yassss. I've been waiting for this (since I live in Tucson). Most people have their dreams and live in the day to day-myself included. Working in a career and going to grad school, I've been dreaming about the end of that. The end of the in between, where you're too busy. The part where you buy the ticket, learn the people, see the places this world has to offer. Thank you for helping me focus on the real things. The things that remind me why I am where I am, and where I'll be soon, after the in-between. I love your work, and the work of everyone you work with. You keep me reminded. You keep me grounded.
Where have I been all my life!! What have I done all my life!! You and your team are such an inspiration. It leaves me a lump in my throat.
Really rad stuff, Chris. Makes me want to leap outside my comfort zone and just go for it!

One my fave films but this behind the scenes is the cherry on top. Love the story!
This is so beautiful!!!
Chris. Thanks for sharing. This is more interesting than the film itself. I guess you now understand how ill prepared you were that time :)) This story is a text-book how not to travel and shoot in Iceland. But at the end you were rewarded for you stubbornness (in a good sense). Surfing under Aurora was really cool :)
PS. I was sure that shot was a real one (although a couple of F-stops darker in reality but anyway real).
Loved seeing this and meeting you at the Photo+ Expo! Amazing job to all you guys

I felt like a kid when i saw them but sadly i opted to go sans camera, so memories are all i have which come rushing back everytime i see a photo or vid of the lights.
