There's one more thing that needed done on 2002 SAAB 9-5, the fog lights. Sylvania sent me over a set of their new LED H1 bulbs to test out in the SAAB. Today we're going to replace the missing foglight housing, install one of the LEDs in it, compare it side by side with the old halogen, and then install the second bulb. I think the difference is pretty obvious, but you can see it for yourself!

So how does it work in the FOG? Actual fog lights are yellow for a reason. Yellow cuts the fog better than white or blue. What you have are driving lights not fog lights.

The number of factory fog lights I have seen on US cars with yellow bulbs or lenses can be counted on one hand. Personally I have never understood the obsession with fog lights. In my part of the country fog is not common and good driving lights would be far more useful.

They are mounted low to project the light under the fog and out of the driver's line of sight. The low height helps to reduce the scattered light coming back into the driver's eyes.
Yellow does work better because of reduced scatter compared to a white light spectrum. It also has the benefit of improved contrast for the human eye.

I have replaced all the lights on both my Harly's with LED all around. 2001 Fatboy, Headlamp, Passing Lights and signals, break and running lights and my 73, Ironhead Headlamp and signals, breaks and running lights. On the Fatboy I had to add a resister in the turn signal line so I could use the turn signals. On the Fatboy I bought an adjustable blinker unit that allowed me to add resistance to my turn signals till they worked. It has a dial on it. I did this not so much for the quality (Quality is better than the OEM incandescent bulbs) but to save on power usage. On the Ironhead you have a generator that only puts out so much power and on the Fatboy I added a full fairing with Sterio and I wanted to save on power from the added audio. Great solution for quality of light and saving on power.

Yeah it's very bright but if it's not reflected properly it's going to disperse in a shorter distance also the fans are pretty noisy on those and for a fog light it's going to get a bunch of dirt and snow and other crap in it I'd use an HID no moving parts cool and it will reflect properly. Those put out good light in your video but you may be blinding people. I believe the thinnest LED bulbs on the market are half millimeter between the you know the actual bulbs like the thickness of the PCB board but it's still not center it's suprizing the difference that that makes.

I put Diode Dynamics LED bulbs in my '18 Colorado low beam projector housings. Very noticeable improvement over the stock halogens (although I've gone through a few pairs, had issues with dimming, but the company has honored the warranty and sent free replacements).
For fog lights I actually prefer keeping the stock halogens. The slightly amber-ish color temperature I think does a better job helping me differentiate what's right in front of me than the white/blue-ish LED color.
Also for hi-beams I run halogens for one main reason - here in New England during the winter, ice will form on the headlights. Old school halogens throw off a ton of heat and can quickly melt the ice. LED's throw off little to no heat, so the ice on the headlights won't melt, forcing you to bang on the light housing to break the ice up. With my setup I just let the truck run for a few minutes with the hi beams on, and that's enough to clear the plastic housings off and drive off.

Does Sylvania make a good H6054 replacement yet?

LEDs are cool, however not practical in the area I live in winter. They don't produce enough heat to keep ice from building up at -25. And the lights freeze up much faster at -40. But I do like them. If they weren't such a PITA to change, I'd run xenons in the winter and LED in the summer. Just like changing tires for winter and summer.
Sylvania usually does their research on lights, however, I'm not sure the color will be good in fog. Usually amber is what's used in heavy fog and blowing snow.

I tried some led bulbs in sister 99 300m and they were 6k which looks great till we drove it at night it was more blue than white and the light didn't throw very far. After that they started dying after about 6 months. They were super cheap and fanless so more then likely overheated and eventually died. Wouldn't have been so bad but those cars are super hard to change out the bulbs or housing. Looks like they have made some improvements in the last few years. I might try some better quality 5k bulbs in my Charger and see if they're less blue and have better light throw now. They do now make 5k color temp but they're rare.

Gotta have a nice heatsink or a fan for sure, I've had so many cheap lights fail 😢

    • @69Dartman
      @69Dartman 2 роки тому

@@WatchJRGo The cheap ones had big heatsinks on them but I guess it wasn't enough and of course they drive them really hard to get decent light output. I was worried about the fans failing when I got them but they need them apparently. The high beams still work but she almost never uses them.

Kelvin is a color rating with 5,000 Kelvins being a bright white like the noonday sun. 4,000 Kelvins have a yellow color and 6,000 Kelvins have a blue color. Always get 5,000 Kelvin bulbs!
You absolutely have to replace that vent opening to the left of the grill. The right vent chrome adds so much to the look of the car.

Problem with LED and HID lights are not legal on all vehicles. A projector type lens is required. Too many DIYers put them in anyway and blind oncoming drivers in a fog, low or high beam headlight.

Believe what you want. The only real downside is a brighter lamp will cause more light to reflect off of the fog ...but that's just physics. Brighter lights also illuminate further down the road. The only thing people talk about that has any relevance is the fact that fixtures designed around a burning wire don't focus the light as well when you insert a burning chip.
