Yes, the first Act closer. To this day I am upset that I got tickets way in advance and they announced her last day after I got them. I saw the show the day after she left. I wanted to cry! But the show was good.

@@keithorr7452 It didn't close Act 1 - it was followed by the new trio singing their first song as an act. why? I had a friend who worked backstage on the show and he said "if we ended the act with her song, we would have had riots during intermission. So they had one more quick song to cool down the audience, then intermission" - but I think most people think of it as the last song before intermission - it's just the real story is more interesting, right?

This song came just before the intermission... when people usually start moving toward the aisles to go to the restroom, get some fresh air, some refreshment. Not THAT evening‼️EVERYONE was GLUED TO THEIR SEATS & after she sustained that last note there was complete, utter SHOCKED SILENCE... then as one, we all stood & the theatre literally shook with thunderous applause, stomping of feet, & shouts of Brava that lasted the entire intermission‼️Jennifer Holiday is a Goddess❣️Michael Jackson recognized her talent & wrote her a song that she recorded on her first solo album.

I was really young the 1st time I saw Jennifer Holliday sing this song and I can't even describe the chills I got and sat there watching in pure awe of her voice. I saw her sing this on Broadway in the original production of Dreamgirls. The hair stood up on my neck! She got the Tony Award. Jennifer Hudson played that role in the movie version and got an Academy Award.
I was sooo lucky to hear her sing this on Broadway during one of her performances. It remains to this day, the singular most amazing theater experience I ever witnessed. Closing out the first Act with this number, there literally was not a dry eye in the house. She literally ripped our hearts out. Do yourself a favor and check out her Tony performance of this song, for the whole experience. I can't listen to this, to this day without welling in tears. She OWNS this song...NO ONE EVER will compare to her rendition. I saw her live in concert in Provincetown where she sang this, again destroying me. I ran into her at dinner afterwards where she autographed my program. How I kept it together I will never now because after dinner, I had a meltdown. Hell...I need a Xanax now...

This is one of the most underrated voices in music history. The ensurregence of music video's of the 80's robbed her of the phenominal success she would have had. When the 80's hit, it was all about the way you looked and less about the talent. With a voice like hers, who cares how you look? Just like that song said, "video did kill the radio star." Undeniable talent!!!
I CAN NOT in good conscience disagree with you. I mean the video killed off the careers of some of the best vocalist that ever lived all because they didn't look a certain way. I'm of the old school that never gave a chit on how anyone looked as long as they could handle business when they hit the stage. I was working over night.. delivering newspapers in the middle of nowhere, florida.. about 25 years ago.. and this song came on the radio.. I was stunned.. I waited to make sure I heard the dj say the artists name.. I've never forgotten where I was when I first heard it.. amazing!
