- A visit to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport in search of two memorials to the victims of two airliner crashes. First stop is the crash of Air Midwest Flight 5481 that crashed on Jan 8th 2003. The second memorial was located on a remote and disused part of the airport between the center and west runways. This memorial is to the victims of USAirways flight 1016 that crashed on approach on 02 Jul 1994.
UPDATE 21 Sept 2019: Many have asked about a memorial to Eastern Flight 212, that crashed on approach to Charlotte's Runway 36R on 11 Sept 1974. That crash site is 3.25 miles south of the airport in a wooded area behind "The Rod of God Ministries" at 7400 S Tryon Street in Charlotte. Unfortunately, there is no memorial to the victims of this crash. Also, I am not sure if the public can any longer access the Flight 1016 memorial site. The airport has plans to build another north/south runway in this area and when they do, the memorial site will be in the middle of the construction site.

Hello Brian, thank you so much for sharing these two memorials. I was living in Charlotte during both of these horrible accidents. I was in Charlotte just two days ago and tried to find the flight 1016 memorial. Looking at your video and driving down Wallace Neal Rd. I realized that this is not the same Wallace Neal Rd. The memorial used to be at the end of Wallace Neal Rd. on the right hand side before you made a right hand turn. There was also parking at that location. I saw that gate when we came out of the overlook. It was open. We drove down the new Wallace Neal Rd but the new landscape and new terrain confused me. So we gave up. Will go back again and try and find it. I do not recall any no trespassing signs. Would hate to be down in there and they come by and lock the gate. But it is such a shame it is not kept up and accessible like the flight 5481 memorial is. It is sad but nice to read all the comments posted. RIP all those that perished and God bless all those that survived and all the family members. I still remember !!!! If you want to find the memorial when you would turn left to go into the overlook just go straight. There you will see the gate.
Thanks Bryan. I was there for both incidents.
I didn’t know that the 1016 memorial was still accessible.
I think of both these days often.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for posting this. I was working that day at the airport and remember the plume of smoke afterwards.
The next day The Charlotte Observer did an article of a man who missed that flight by a few minutes. Needless to say he it made him evaluate life.
They need to make the memorial for flight 1016 more accessible and add the names of those lost in the crash! And a new memorial for Eastern Airlines flight 212 that crashed in 1974 killing 72 people!

I was flying to CLT from EWR that 2003 morning to visit a client. We were in final descent and were maybe 1000 feet off the ground expecting to be on the ground in under a minute when the pilot suddenly pulled up and out. I just knew right then it was a crash ahead of us. We diverted to Greensboro and waited about 3 hours on the tarmac when they let us go on to CLT. Saw the remnants of the crash and the charred corner of the hangar. That was the quietest terminal ive ever been in that day. You could hear a pin drop on the whole walk out to the rental cars. Every worker just looking down as you walked passed them. Very sad.
Thanks for the comment and for watching.
My father is Ray Cain, died in flight 1016, thanks to this video- I recently went to memorial. Its an awful mess to get to but its there.
I'm sorry to read this. I work with NBC Charlotte and we're actually trying to put together a 25-anniversary story about the crash. Wondering if you'd be willing to do an interview with us about your father or put us in touch with a family member who would. My email is nmorabito@wcnc.com. Thanks! Nate
@@wcncdefenders3553 hello please let me know when this might be released..........i lost someone quite close to me paul perez.....
I'm sorry to hear this John. Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/sRxW8y5Ly3M/v-deo.html
So sorry that you list your Dad in this crash.
Thanks for watching and sharing!
Wonderful video. Thanks. I remember when 1016 happened and going out there the day after. Memorial used to be very easy to get to. Biked by it may a time. Sorely wish there was a memorial for Flight 212.
Glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching!!
I was there as a Security Screening Manager when it happened in 2002. It was such a horrible tragedy. Adding to the tragedy, was the fact that it was the first aviation incident in the U.S. after 9/11.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
Wow didn't know it was the crash after 9/11 definitely eerie and tragic. 🙏
In 1994 I was driving a truck making deliveries to Charlotte Douglas Airport. I went there five nights a week. I usually went in back way to Airport.. On Wallace Neel road. I left Airport going back to Greer SC down Wallace Neel around 12.30 am. I woke up next day, and seen the flight 1016 crash on the news. Just hours after I came down Wallace Neel. I thought unreal. The next week I'm driving Back to Charlotte Douglas. And I went up Wallace Neel. There were skid marks, and guages in road. To my left a chain link fence behind Airport. There were reaths hanging on the fence, memorials. I seen the wreckage of Piedmont flight 22 in Hendersonville NC July 19 1967. From the interstate. The nose of plane sticking up, and rolls of seats and luggage on road side. Terrible tragedies. I traveled I26 many times thru Hendersonville in semi truck. And I always think of Flight 22.
Omg! I remember this flight! I was going to the Naval boot camp on October 11th 1994! Leaving from Columbia, SC to Charlotte, NC. It was the 4 of us going. We had to put on these weird wired tight bracelets! The red was on the left wrist for your emergency contacts and the yellow on the right for identity. Talk about tight! We had to keep those things on until we were at O'Hare!!! I was so glad they cut them suckers off! Jerome and Patricia Price are from my hometown Hartsville, SC. They haven't too long gotten married. No kids. Trisha has a brother named Ronnie. Her Mom is still alive. Their beautiful tombstone is at Greenlawn Cementary in Hartsville. R.I.P. Jerry and Trish ❤😇
Thanks for sharing!
Flyin Brian You are so welcome
I remember this all too well. WIS announced the crash, and once they said the flight was from Columbia, my mom said I hope we don’t know anyone on that flight. We did. I grew up around the corner from Patricia and Ronnie is my classmate.
The pathway was an existing walking park the airport made prior to the crash. Thank you for posting.
I knew the captain best. I knew the crew and one of the passengers. The flight was not overweight by the standards of the measure at the time of the crash. Even had it been overweight by FAA rules there is still a margin for error built into those rule. Be it know there was still an entirely empty cargo compartment on this flight. I thought they moved the memorial for the CAE flight. I was in the newsroom at WBTV3 in CLT when that crash occurred. The flight went through a home on Wallace Neil and the asphalt you are looking at was the old bike path around the airport. I frequently visit the 5481 memorial. I've not been back to the 1016 memorial since construction on the new runway started.
Very interesting. I don't recall seeing any of these on the news over here though.
Brian - I used to make many trips to the overlook about 10-15 years ago prior to the expansion, there was a church at the corner of Wallace Neel. I have an old photo from 2004-05ish of the road with scars across it from the crash, the memorial was just beyond the road by a fence. There was an abandoned house across the street about where your car was parked.
Thanks for your comment.
Would like to see that photo if you could upload it please.
i guess i can understand how planes crashed a while back but to have it still happening is just unreal!
Sad memories indeed Brian, but a good wee solo adventure.
Fly'n Brian, thanks for sharing my friend. Is the memorial of Flight 1016 still accessible?
I don't know if the memorial is still accessible or not. I have not been out there since I made this video and a lot of construction has been going on out there.
I very much would like to visit the 1016 Memorial. Did you have to have security clearance to drive to it?
No security clearance was needed for the 1016 memorial as it was not in a "secure" area of the airport. It is in what looks to be a land-fill area of the airport. Lots of construction debris, but you can drive to it.
Flyin Brian Interesting. I drove through the gate but noticed No Trespassing signs and turned around. There were piles of dirt and lots of construction equipment.
Didn't mean to thumbs down. Crazy phone.
Also Flt 212 Charleston SC to Charlotte. Crashed 9-11-1974. Stephen Colbert's father and a brother, maybe 2) were killed in that crash.
You are correct. No memorial at that site. Thanks for watching!
Was there ever a memorial erected for Eastern 212? Btw the clt airport is now building a 4th north/south runway between the current 18R & 18C which will probably put it very close to the 1016 memorial & intermodal yard.
No, there wasn't. Here's a very recent documentary about that crash: ua-cam.com/video/CLn2fX78F-4/v-deo.htmlsi=LFKXnDz-d1PKyCgt
Where off of Wallace Neel do you turn to find the 1016 memorial? Tried finding it today, but could not locate it. I was a small child when this crash happened. I remember seeing it on the news, and always being interested in it. Wanted to pay my respects to the victims.
The only way to get to the this memorial is to drive out to the airport observation area (off of Old Dowd Rd) and instead of turning left into the observation area, go straight through the gate in the fence. Seems like most of the time this gate is open, however, sometimes not. Thia will take you through what appears to be a dumping areas of old concrete and other debris. Go about 400 yards and look for where the road veers off to the left. This is the original Wallace Neel road right-of-way. Another 200 yards and you should see the memorial on the left. Glad you liked the video and happy exploring!
Hey what about Eastern 212....trying to land on 36....from Charleston
No memorial for that one. Thanks for watching!
i lost someone very close to me on that flight....paul perez....rip
Sorry to hear that. Thank you for watching.
Do you know why there isn’t a memorial for Eastern Air flight 212
A lot has to happen for a memorial to become a reality. It starts with someone (usually the families) deciding they want one. Next, a location must be chosen to erect it. That means the property owner must either sell, or otherwise allow, the land to be used for the monument. Then, money raised pay the costs to prepare the site as well as to design and build it. Who knows which once of the many things that need to occur to create a monument, never took place on the Eastern 212 crash. Thanks for watching!
This is one of the few crashes for which there is no memorial.
@@danasimcho310it’s sad, it does meet some of the criteria since it changed aviation rules (sterile cockpit rule) the Charlotte observer just did a series on 212 for the 50th anniversary, it was great (if you watch my dad is Louis and uncle is John who passed on that flight, my dad changed his mind last minute and stayed behind)
@@victoriasseacretoki Hi, I watched that series a few hours ago. I'm very sorry your uncle John passed in that flight. I saw your dad and mom in that video. When your dad's and uncle's surname, Pinheiro, appeared on the screen, I immediately wondered whether they have/had Portuguese roots, maybe Brazilian, since Pinheiro (the meaning being 'pine tree') is a frequently used surname here in Portugal where I live. Do you whether they are? Regards
@@GRosa hi! Both my parents (and the uncle who passed) immigrated from Cape Verde in the 1960s, ancestry dna has me at 60% Portuguese :)
So sad about this! May all the ones that lost their lives rest in peace. What is the name of the background music?
I am very sorry, but I do not remember the name of the music and the original project files were wiped from my hard-drive. It was obtained from the UA-cam Audio Library. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
I responded to flight 1016. I was off when 5481 happened.
Firefighter or medic?
@Flyin Brian, Police.
I was looking, but couldn't find a video reenactment of the doomed flight? I lost my cousin on that flight which happened on 7-2-94. Then my mom died of throat cancer 7-14-94 So my moms only other sibling lost her son and sister 12 days apart. It was so soon, I didn't even know of Tucker's passing until my moms funeral. Saw the news reports but didn't think anything of it.
The TV show Air Crash Investigation did an episode about the Flight 1016 crash.
Mike Echo November Here is the video for the episode Air Disasters. US Air Flight 1016. The name of the episode is called Storming Out. I provided the link for you. I am so sorry for you lost.

There was an Eastern (flight 212) crash (fog, pilot error) about 3 miles south of Douglas Airport in 1974, with over 70 dying. Not sure if there is a memorial for them.

There is no memorial.
My friends dad was the co pilot on that plane his name was Phill Hayes and they made a air investigation on it coming soon
Where did Eastern fligh212 crash?
That crash site is in a wooded area behind the "Rod of God Ministries" at 7400 S Tryon Street in Charlotte.
I lived nearby. One of the first civilians to walk on crash site after investigation/ clean up. Still smelled jet fuel. I found many artifacts including birthday card and identification
Hey there. I work with NBC Charlotte and we're actually trying to put together a 25-anniversary story about the crash. Wondering if you'd be willing to do an interview with us about what you experienced that day. My email is nmorabito@wcnc.com. Thanks! Nate

DO YOU REMEMBER THE PLANE CRASH IN CHARLOTTE FROM CHARLESTON S.C (SEPTEMBER 1973)
Yes. Stephen Colbert's Dad and a brother, maybe 2, were killed in that crash. I was driving to work when I heard the news. I can show you exactly where I was when I heard.
Yes. No memorial for that one. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for posting this. I work with NBC Charlotte and we're actually trying to put together a 25-anniversary story about the crash. Wondering if you'd be willing to let us use your video since the airport says the location is now secure and off-limits? My email is nmorabito@wcnc.com. Thanks! Nate
WCNC Defenders Have you all been able to confirm that the memorial is still accessible to public? There are No Trespassing signs where the road goes to it. I have tried to find out from airport officials with no response.
The memorial is no longer accessible to the public. The airport said it's between runways in secure property, so we weren't able to film it. Here is a link to a documentary remembering the people impacted: ua-cam.com/video/sRxW8y5Ly3M/v-deo.html
It is on what is now airport property. It's supposed to be secure but within the past couple years a UA-camr was able to access it. We asked the airport for access and they initially agreed, then backtracked -- saying only family members/survivors were allowed to access it.
Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for watching!
Did anyone survive1016?
stitch16261 Yes some did survive.
ty
As a matter of fact, there were survivors. Something like 20 people survived the crash.
ty Bryan I am going to sub and like ok.
13 or so
gerry rigging things. i hope the families got attorneys and cleaned the owners out!!!
