A two hour and 15 minute musical where every single song is a breakaway pop hit. It shouldn't be possible, and it works as well today as it did then. How?! It's unbelievable.
The woman who played Deena came super close to the real Diana Ross. The looks and nasally soprano voice is nearly identical to Ms. Ross. Were they separated at birth or something? They're practically twins. She was made to play this role of Deena.
How can any human beings sing so fabulously? One thing great about this routine is that all 3 gals share leads. Be a waste to leave anyone of these incredibly talented vocalist out!
That's because even before Dreamgirls made it to Broadway, Miss Ross and her legal team threatened to sue the heck out of them. Sheryl Lee Ralph was told that they would go after her personally.
...and then Miss Ross backed off because she realized they were actually HELPING her brand (branding didn't really exist in the 80s as we know it today)!
Michael Bennett had these girls on point...every step and movement on point! This performance is amazing...its not easy to sing up stairs in a dress....and together with the other girls! This is a perfect performance...and Linda is my favorite deena of all time!
This performance is from October 1983 on a variety show on NBC, it was the first national tour of Dreamgirls after the original Broadway production. It opened in March 1983 in Los Angeles. Linda Leilani Brown played Deena, Arnetia Walker played Lorrell, and Deborah Burrell played Michelle. Arnetia sings (And I"m telling you), and Deborah sings (Family) in this video.
@@lisavillano9348 Jennifer Holliday played Effie for a short time and was replaced by Lillias White for the remaining duration of dreamgirls in L.A at that time. Michael Bennett wanted Deena Jones and the Dreams which was the group's new name to perform on televesion shows like this medley to promote the show. Michael always had Effie and Deena Jones and the Dreams perform separately for marketing purposes.
@@lisavillano9348 Also Arnetia Walker who plays Lorrell in the show was also an understudy to Effie. In this medley she sings And I'm telling you I'm not going.
That Linda Leilani Brown is amazing. Her resemblance to La Ross id stunning but she has her own voice, her own spin on the Dreamgirls interpretation. Loved this walk down Memory Lane.
I agree! The Deena is a dead Ringer for a '77 Ross when she'd wear her hair slicked back and glamorous..love her megawatt Ross smile too. She had Ross' stage-face down pat! What's her real name?
Im not too sure on the correct spelling of her middle name but it's Linda Lelini Brown I think! She was the original replacement for Sheryl Lee Ralph(Original Deena) on Broadway and the first Deena on the First National Tour! Not sure what she is up to nowadays though!
Where is this from? This clip has been on and off UA-cam, Awesome to see how much talent, money, and promotion was put into a musical with a mostly black cast, This show changed Black musicals on Brodway, Its a shame the movie and the 2009 tour dont live up to this, they both seem cheap and rushed idk i love this show and i hope we get a good revival that brings the glamour back to the show.
I remember watching Deborah Burrell seen here on the far right in the original cast of Dreamgirls on Broadway. She was AMAZING and STUNNING to watch! Los NYC
In the stage show (L.A. and Broadway), the stairs flew up/down with the women ON them, while they were singing. It was early 80s and automation moves were new and it was THRILLING!
Aha! If Beyonce and/or a surprise young lady was in the movie to give Jennifer-H a run for her money? We'd have had a great movie with the glamor to boot!

Saw it on Broadway several times. HOOKED!

The lead singer clearly is emulating Diana Ross' singing style, far more than Sheryl Lee Ralph did in the original.

Imagine being a dancer and also the stage prop movers at the same time. Did y'all see the guy almost fall in the beginning?
These women can sing.

No, the original Dreamgirls cast were on Broadway and these were the Dreamgirls cast who were going to be on the National tour.
@@gcmacyman I think this was the Los Angeles company before they went on tour.
BE COOL!!!!!
Who is this playing Deena yall?
If I'm correct, her name is Linda Leilani Brown.
Well, kinda. They're based on The Supremes.
Linda Leilani Brown! She has a couple Deena videos on here!...
@tnance15 I think it's because the music is a bit faster, and they are trying to keep a fun entertaining pace.
@ezklortiz No...lol
What was I doing in 1983?? Lol
Lol I was 4 playing with dolls and I actually remembered seeing this
