I may have to check that crank bearing too... I have a grease cup underneath, but not sure how it connects with that large cavity... great to see the green color again!
The housing on this one has a grease nipple so it just has to have a bunch pumped in. If you have a bushing, then (at least with rubber bushings in cars) you shouldn't ever let grease get on as it degrades them
You shouldn't have a bushing though as there not for rotating parts, but more as a small shock absorber. You might just have a journal bearing. And if you need an oil cup underneath then check your bolt torques and bearing seals cos they shouldn't leak any oil

It's amazing the quality of these older machines. For it not to be greased for years and everything is still okay. Also the old girl shined up pretty good.
I've been working on old machinery for over fifty years, that grease fitting was common, I began replacing them with zerk fittings, in the sixties, generally they are based on standard pipe thread, 1/8 or 1/4 inch, and then you use one grease gun for the whole machine. Thanks for sharing this, what you found is what I've found most of my life, old machinery was well enough made to survive even violating basic rules of maintenance. The old machines never die.
Tim! you put your bearing cover on backwards, the first one, back by the rear flywheel. In the early shot, the oil nipple is on the left, then its on the right as you re-installed it. Unless you filmed from both sides of the hammer. I would check it out in case its a problem. Cheers
I noticed that too, and it was definitely backwards. The nipple orientation went from away from to towards the flywheel.
Way to go Tim - maintenance, including cleaning, is essential for any mechanical device. Especially metal working machinery!

The rings in the outer bearing housing are supposed to be split.
If it is still breathing oil you can make a catch-can for the vent. When it’s full you can reuse the oil too.
I watched my first video yesterday (chain mail ) then saw the title of this video. I expected to write a comment like "Did I just Click bait my veiwers" but instead I really enjoyed the discovery of this old machine. And the clean up was very impressive. Subscribed and liked the video instead 🤙

The button heads are good style of fitting. We set up 2 differant grease guns .We use them on certain types of machines that require food safe grease and we use regular fittings for regular grease that way nobody puts the wrong grease in a machine

ps on that main bearing quite often the cork wipers are set with a little bit of protusion fort better sealing it will be a set amount so a groove isnt worn in the shaft hope this helps in future
I watched a video of a traditional Japanese swordsmith who didn't use power hammers. Instead, he had 4 guys swinging sledge hammers for him. So, fundamentally the same thing. Variations on mechanical hammers have been around for over a thousand years. For as long as guys have been swinging a hammer, they've been thinking "there has to be a better way".
/I built my own power hammer. It is the better way.
Smart trouble shooting. I felt something like pride watching the hammer get its once every 75 years cleaning. Nice work, and what a great machine. Closing a match box was trick.✌
I do a lot of bearing work and I believe those are split intentionally. It lets you roll those pieces in and out with the bearing. You should have two bearing on the crank (?) shaft for the drive. One is held in place and is called the captured bearing and one is allowed to move back and forth when the machine heats up and is called the floating bearing. The bearing on the back must be the locked (or capture) bearing.
The firs blacksmithing videos I saw from Alec steele where he used power hammers I was absolutely amazed at how it worked, that led to me looking into how they work and they are truly amazing pieces of machinery

On the open vent hole you may consider some sort of filter to catch the oil spray. That'll help keep things cleaner including your lungs.

Looks like a common 5/8 button head grease zerk
build some sort of breather for that hole, much like one for a turbo car, use a catch can setup.

Come on dude You must keep the spirit alive ,
Just a heads up. That wd40 will dry up within the hour but in cold weather may stay moist for up to 1 day. It doesn't make a good lubricant because of it. If you have a moving part thats kind of sticky spraying it with wd40 just breaks down the grease or oils that are making it sticky.
That's a button head grease fitting, it uses a block that slides over it in a groove to grease it.
We have those button style greasers on our jaw crusher where I work.

I want one! I am an old lady and my hammer arm ..well she ain't what she used to be, many long years ago. I don't have room for a beautiful chambersburg, but I would love to find a 50 or 100 pound little giant. Rare as hens teeth in the pacific northwest!
I noticed right off that you put the bearing cover on wrong. Go rewatch it and you can see that the grease nipple is facing towards the hammer when you took it off and when you put it back on it’s facing the rear of it. Not sure if it matters or not but I noticed it.
hi timothy in the uk one name for those button nipples is a tecelamit type i used to have them all over my bus so i got the adapter and screwed in a more normal zerck type it now lives in my grease an oiler box ready for the rare occasion i find one of the old tecelamit ones witch are great no leaking able to withstand an immense amount of pressure without getting stuck on or popping off great vidio for us thanks
Bearing or bushings grease is a way of transferred/storage oil.
Did you go back and grease the main bearing? You said you would do it at the end but I didn't see you do it.

Hi Timothy, when I saw the nameplate of the machine, I saw that the machine came from Germany! I would really be interested in how old the part is and when it was built? And how did you get this cool machine? Hückeswagen is around 25km away from Cologne. I can even find an address for the Bêché company, but unfortunately no website. I myself live in Bocholt near the Dutch border. PS: "Made in Germany" usually lasts a lifetime! :-) I wish you all the best for your channel! Stay healthy!
Timothy, I honestly hope they are not jerking you around on the bids for your hammer. As the people who have drove the price as high as it is now, have zero history with eBay auctions , I would ask eBay for support on the auction, they can fix ignorance real quick.

It's crazy to think about how much people used to be able to make off of ad revenue before google took over. It's more of a passion project for anybody who doesn't have a patreon and/or massive numbers of subscribers now
'Broken' makes it sound accidental. When it's really by design. UA-cam/Google are doing very nicely from the existing model. Content creators need to start acting collectively to try and enforce change.

The thing you pull out at 7 min is an grease nipple. It’s used a lot in german vehicles and i guess also machines. See my channel we use them on our Nashorn restoration. Jack of all trades Nashorn restoration

@@ianturpin9180 I'm not sure the sort of people using 'tradition' as an argument against power hammers know that China, India, and the Middle East had metal at all, and I'm sure that it wouldn't convince them if they did. Had a man try to convince me that Damascus steel was developed in Spain, and even refused to believe that Damascus is a real place! That said I really should have indicated that I meant Europe, and I'm going to edit it to make sure it doesn't cause any confusion.
