@@valhersa29 I saw it in Season 2 when he was doing his physical therapy with Zach and got pissed they dropped that whole idea (I actually thought Alex was going to come out in S2 and then was disappointed). I already wrote about it in another comment but 1. They kind of hint at in in S2 and then it goes no where 2. Season 3 kind forgot about it which makes it in season 4 3. a little weird because the development just isn't there.
Don't get me wrong, he's my favorite character in the season as he doesn't fuck up or anything. I honestly feel bad for him. Do I think he should have been with Zach instead of two characters I hated previously? Yes. Their friendship was one of the best in the season (and S2).
Like I said, I wish they had taken the time in season 2, 3, and finally 4 for him to question etc.
We don't see this development for any character except probably Jessica (whose story line is probably done the best when it comes to touchy subjects. It's not perfect but pretty good considering the shit thats in the show)

Honestly the book is (a little) better. I know books are usually better because there’s more room for interpretation, but the way they show her fall into deep depression is a lot more real. In the show, she’s so fucking unlikable, but in the book you understand what she struggled with more.
Faith Also it’s not nearly as glorified - you never find out how she did it, and because you have the constant I herbal monologue of clay (who isn’t a fucking weirdo white knight like in the series) you get a better sense of how crappy it all is. Also he constantly is like „No Hanna, that’s not fair“ or „you can’t say that“.

Watching this...by the end I had a very very hard time feeling sorry for this girl. She's horribly sarcastic, weird, annoying, she pushes people away and when they don't want to hang out with her she's depressed. When someone is trying to help her, she yells at them and then gets angry when they don't come running back to acknowledge her...ugh she's annoying

That scene after she leaves the counselor's office and waits for him to come running after her was the last straw for me. How is someone supposed to help you if you tell them to their face you don't want it? People have their own lives and their own problems. You can't expect everyone to keep track of your mood swings and jump in when you need help. If you don't express your problems yourself, people won't realise what you're going through.
This is why this show got on my nerves so much.

This show is f*cking trash. At this point, it's moved away from trying to "start a conversation about mental health in teens" (which it does poorly) and has decided to become a Pretty Little Liars/Riverdale hybrid. There's absolutely no excuse to have graphic rape scenes in a show aimed at teens, and it took them two years to remove the graphic suicide scene (after mental health experts told them not to do that). I just...this show. It's awful. Bless you two for this.
There's a lot of valid criticisms for this show including it's poor handling of mental health issues, but idk why there shouldn't be graphic scenes in it when there's literally a warning at the start of every episode. It's rated unsuitable for people under 17.

I didn't like Hannah in the book either. She shouldn't have ended her life, no one should, but she pushed away everyone who wanted to help her.

Julian Crawford yes, but it's actually quite different to the show. We clay listens to the tape in one night, he only talks to Tony and we don't really see the other other people in the tapes (maybe Tyler but he's just in his room), the reasons change for a few people, also the events are done as a snowball effect and get worse as time went on instead of the show where it swaps between big and small events. But probably the biggest change is Hannah is shown to be wrong at times, but can be attributed to her mental state at the time, instead of the show where there is no difference to the way she acts which is why I don think people liked Hannah because she was always closed off and trying to find the worst in people.
Book Hannah didn't even consult an adult right until the end and she was deliberately vague with the only one she did talk to at the end. And that one person (Mr Porter) was pretty reasonable in my opinion, I mean if Hannah wasn't going to do anything then wtf was he supposed to do??? And he wasn't even qualified in psychology or anything, his main job was teaching English. All of the adults are made out to be useless just because their entire world doesn't revolve around this one blob of pure teenage angst and whininess shaped like a 17 year old. That was what annoyed me the most.

The showrunners try to portray the series as some crusade against bullying and suicide but the really bad message seems more like "suicide is the best revenge."

The most realistic thing is that people who really act like Hannah actually DONT have friends.
I read the book and Hannah baker is a terrible person, she tries to pretend that it's very ones else's faults, and basically kills herself for revenge. Also, she tells a bunch of people about Jessica's rape. I don't care if she didn't say the name, what's his face figured it out. Also, she consents to Bryce in the book, and then is like "I killed my self cause I gave consent". Overall people need to stop treating her like an angel. Making fun of this show is completely okay! Edit (this is literally from years ago but I feel bad cause it blew up): I very clearly misremembered what happened between her and Bryce and how that scene played out, it’s been years since I’ve read this book (same when I made the comment), a lack of consent is not consent. I had misremembered some kind of consent in that scene and I couldn’t get very far into the show. I know it doesn’t matter but as a survivor I hated how this came off

She didn’t consent. She said nothing, so she didn’t say yes or no. Bryce is just a terrible person for thinking that her being silent was consent.
Rowena Ravenclaw because teenage boys are capable of mind reading? Unless someone specifically tells you they don’t want to or is physically resisting, it’s very ambiguous much of the time. Most sexual encounters people don’t say “yes blank is okay” every five seconds. Most people would find that annoying. The book purposely makes the encounter ambiguous

That door transition was AMAZING though.
lolathetomboy the show’s editing, direction, and most of the general acting is generally top-drawer. The show’s plotting and general writing is decent enough to be tense and hold attention. But the writers (and maybe the original author, I haven’t read the book) made Hannah Baker and her mom so absolutely unlikeable. Hannah always felt like an arrogant person who shirked responsibility and overreacted, and her mom was exactly the same. Hated those two characters. The rest of it was halfway decent.
Caleb Lim The book is actually quite decent. The suicide scene was handled more respectfully. Not only does it happen OFF screen and subtly, but even Hannah said that she didn’t want to cut her wrists (in the book she OD on pills) or hang herself because it would be a brutal sight for her parents when they find her. She shows the warning suicidal signs that were earlier explained in the book as remembered by Tony, the book discusses ways to get help, and more so the book is about the mystery and not so much on the suicide and the whole revenge thing.
However the writing for the show is just atrocious. They portray that if Clay had gotten together with Hannah, she wouldn’t have committed suicide. Meanwhile in the book, Hannah is convinced not even someone kind as Clay could save her. The night everything happened at Jessica’s party, Hannah said just wanted to endure rest of high school and push through her dark thoughts. Then it all went to shit.

The really tragic thing about this show, for me, is that Jay Asher, who wrote the book, did so because his niece attempted suicide and this was his way of processing it.
I've heard that the book was actually quite good. It sucks that the show, especially season 2 and onward, made an absolute mockery of the original work.

I watched it during finals weak my senior year. So I was a bit distracted, but I remember really liking it. To the point where I bought the book and was patiently waiting for season 2.
I recently re read the book and I think it holds up much better than the show.
When I rewatched season 1 the day before season 2 came out... boy oh boy I didn't like it.
Instead of reconciliation tapes, she sends these tapes to making them feel more guilty. Causing all unnecessary events to happen. Worst show ever.
Rusty Lionrek she is selfish and cares only about herself. I think thats more tragic that she blames everyone but herself. Not one once of thoughts about her actions.
I actually enjoyed that they didn't make hannah a perfect victim too pure for this cruel world. That would've been so cringeworthy.

Exactly. The guilty feelings that can come from suicide are bad enough on their own and should never be used as weapons. This entire show is dedicated to Hannah Baker breaking that unspoken rule and us getting to see how it affects everyone else negatively. Honestly, this show should be used as a cautionary tale only. That's the only way I see fit to make it worthwhile.

I’m in the minority who HATED what Hanna did to her parents and best friend, especially her mother. The show portrays Hannah as having such a close relationship with her parents yet she doesn’t even once try going to them about any of her pain. They would have definitely gotten her the help she needed. But she goes to that stupid school counselor instead?!? I’m sorry, but Hannah was just incredibly selfish for killing herself and then blaming everyone else for doing it. Her parents will never recover from it and she didn’t even give them a chance to try and help her.

If she just opened up to her family just alittle about the rape, I bet her parents could have gotten her some true justice. No wait, had she atleast stopped the rape when she saw it happening to her friend then the story would have been different. Hannah had many chances and didn’t take them, even before the rape she turned people away.
There’s a thing called mental illness. Some people who haven’t been through what she’s been through or even anything bad at all kill themselves because of mental illness

I personally have been through severe mental issues and sexual abuse and overall domestic violence, the things this character is supposed to portray, but I know how to not be a complete fucking asshole to everyone.

What it shows is a girl who is kind of unlikeable (even before shit happens to her) and then decides to end her life (not because she felt there was nothing else in life) but because she wanted to "SHOW THEM"!🙄 And somehow, the show makes it seem like that is possible. Like her getting back at them through killing herself works and she lives on. It's not true, when you die you die. Regardless of what you think happens after you die. Although I have heard the book shows her mental state more

There were no big announcements or any further suicide prevention actions taken.
