This movie came out years ago and we never did a track for it, so when I saw that it had a sequel on the way I was thrilled to have a reason to go back and watch Tall Girl! All I knew going in is that it probably featured a "tall girl" in some capacity, and I was right! What I didn't see coming? A tall boy. And a small boy! I've already said too much...
For this Netflix drama / teen drama I am joined by my good friend / ex-roommate Derick! Some may recognize him from appearances in Nyctophobia, Pity Applause, and even an old PMI review, but for most of y'all this is your introduction and I have a feeling he's gonna be your new fav.
We laughed our asses off and we truly couldn't be more excited for Tall Girl 2. In the meantime... enjoy Tall Girl The First!

Straight facts
The weirdest thing about this movie is the fact there wasn't a single other person - especially a guy - at her school even close to 6ft. Swedish guy rolls up and it's like they're a pair of Galapagos tortoises. The real story here is what nearby factory poisoned the local river and stunted these kids' growth?
Swedish people plus girl are the only people who are actually allowed to be 6ft+

Literally the most unrealistic part of this film. When I was in school there were a bunch of girls who were much taller than Tall Girl. Like 6’3” or 4”.
But people were STILL taller than them. They aren’t fucking giants
My favorite thing about this movie is that the actress is 6'2", but the writers decided that was too ridiculous and made her character an inch shorter than her actual height.
Meanwhile the movie is framed like she's 6'8''

In Australia most kids in high school is around 6 foot more or less. About quarter of my classmates are over 6ft
i’m 6’1 and i went to high school and i’m a girl so i’ll tell you- it really wasn’t that bad. like most people got over it after 3 weeks. i also didn’t wear a founding father fit to prom because i have TASTE. TASTE.
Yeah, in the next movie tall girl has to put up with people bullying her for showing up to prom dressed like that. And I for one, am on the bullies' side on that one.

The model of the molecule is weird too, given how carbon atoms are implied and "ends" and "bends". At any joint or end of a joint there's a carbon atom unless otherwise specified by a different element. He didn't even really have to decipher anything, dude just counted the number of Cs and Hs he saw.
Counting in Sweden has been forbidden since the Great Culling of '04 so he's just excited he's finally able to do it in the US.

I stand by the fact that the sister is the funniest character in this movie and every scene with her is better than the rest of the movie around it. The knife throwing in her sash where every single knife just bounces off the target? Which is a full size print out of her rivals face? iconic.

As a tall girl... not always. If you are skinny & lithe like a supermodel or the actress in this, then yes you are considered attractive. If you're bulky (muscle, fat, bone, whatever), then no. People don't bully you, it's more through body language, but you're made to feel like a freak of nature, like you're Godzilla or something. Women are raised to feel guilty for taking up space and you're constantly aware that you're bigger than all the girls and half the guys.
I used to lift heavy in the gym and had tree-trunk legs and big shoulders and I felt really strong but people definitely found me less attractive. Since COVID, I've switched to less intense exercises and dropped some weight and the difference is night and day. People treat me like an actual person now, which is nice, but I do miss lifting and feeling strong.

So the main tall girl in this movie was on Dance Moms. She was one of the girls that was almost on Abby’s team, but got cut for issues about her being too tall compared to the other girls. When this came out, I thought it’s probably a coincidence, but I think it’s funnier to think that it’s not.

To answer your question about whether she's a good actress or just tall- This movie is kind of based on that girl's life story. She was on dance moms, and everyone made fun of her for being really tall, and she was rejected from group dances for being too tall for the group

I would have rather watched a movie about a character who was a tall dancer and was judged for their height since it is a real issue for some dancers. And I thought this when the movie was originally released.
When I watched Dance Moms, I felt so bad for her.

It seems like this issue makes the most sense in the context of dance, rather than school life. Not to say you can't get bullied for being tall, people get bullied for the most insignificant things after all, but making this movie be about dance would have fit much better to bring this issue to light.
That's actually a great point about the letterboxing. Maybe the opening scene in the library could've started in letterbox, but when Jodie stands up it transitions into full-screen

This sucks. As a tall girl, and with broad shoulders to boot, I grew up super insecure and still have my moments to this day in my 20s. And this movie completely ignores any real problems someone her height would have. Nobody bullied me, it's all just in my head and societal pressure for girls to be small and feminine.
Not to mention she's super slim and blonde, making her height very desirable, as opposed to if she had a bigger build (no, not saying she has to be fat, just a more muscular structure- something "undesirable" for a woman)

According to my sister, a girl who was 6'2 at age 14 & wears a size 14 men's shoes(& actually auditioned for this movie), there are only two things that suck about being tall
1. Having to constantly bend down to use a sink
2. Having to buy dressy shoes from drag queen-centered websites because they are the only ones in her size

The movie makes it seem like this girl has no experience being tall and it happened over night. My best friend was 6 ft in high school and her response to "how's the weather up there" was pretending she couldn't hear the guy saying it because he was too short. That's something you figure out by middle school.
As a fellow adolescent tall girl (5'10 by the time I was 13 yrs old) I can honestly say I absolutely did NOT need this movie🤣 but I needed this funny as shit commentary, so thank you both for your service! Love this duo!
