I’ll never forget the time that Kibler made a quest pirate deck on day 1 of the Stormwind expansion, when we didn’t even know what the Juggernaut did. That was hysterical.
Its fine for there to be powercreep, for all the reasons Kibler laid out - but you also need some form of reset every now and again to keep things in check, like HS and other CCG do with rotation so power creep is relative to a changing set, rather then ever upwards.
This is my take on it as well. Mtg does this really well in that new mechanics frequently cause a stir and if they don’t end up feeling good, they will be replaced often.
HS doesnt really do a good job with it though, right? Cuz you still need the next set to be better than the previous three. Rotation helps but it isn't really sufficient to fully prevent power creep. I am sure you could think of a bunch of cards from two years ago that were good then but are fully unplayable now
The problem is incongruent power creep, aggro and combo decks keep getting better and better cards while Control archetypes are still stuck with things like SHIELD BLOCK in current year HS
And if you don't you end up with games like Yu-Gi-Oh, which has some serious design flaws (That doesn't make it inherently bad, put down the pitchforks YGO fans)
Wonderful. The extreme finesse required to make a play like this is insane. You actually tricked your opponent into thinking that they would live. Excellent
I have a tempo pirate warrior right now, hook fist is underrated as a card. I apricate all the interesting decks you make , its always insightful to watch and improve my own decks
you may wonder that EVERY Human on this earth makes mistakes. Even your mother, the president, your neighbor, your boss and wow even you. Wow who would have thought. My Brain just exploded by the thought of it 😱🤯
So an example of good reaction cards that can answer current non answered cards QUEST kill cards. Before anyone goes off the deep end w/o THINKING first they need to realize that people need to build THEIR winning deck and can't jut add in every tech card in the game so this allows players to think about what cards to use in their decks while still giving them the CHOICE of adding in certain tech cards. So using my example a quest kill card would be useless in most games but NOT if the design team had any creativity in their heads. We saw the example i am about to mention within MTG and that MULTI cards which are cards that have multiple abilities like maybe Kill quest and counter the next Beast or counter the next Nage there are hundreds of ideas that could go into multi cards.
For power creep alot of people seem to forget how rakahstan rumble was one of the worse sets of all time due to how weak and bad the cards are. Power creep is not bad and is required for the game to grow but there is a balance on how much power you can creep
Every time a set underperforms, it's not just bad for sales, players hate it too. Everyone wants new cards to be better, but then they complain when the new cards are better.
I don't remember Rastakhan having weak cards - I remember disliking it because I don't find luchadors interesting, the Rumble Run was inferior to previous dungeon runs, and its star mechanic forced you to decide between making inefficient trades on purpose and treating your minions as vanilla and neither option felt fun.
I agree, I play it all the time and it can be great, and so can the same old boring pirate quest. But if you want something more like a traditional Warrior play style - you've had it.
I think the team is finally beginning to understand how they've let Warrior fans down, and I'd expect to see a major re-work and update similar to what Priest once received in due course. The next few expansions' cards are already designed but the new core set it receives will be a start and I suspect an internal summit and re-think might be required to truly rescue it.
I know you’re probably only referring to control, but enrage is about tier 2 at the moment. It’s just a little clunky to play and not what most people are looking for.
Power creep is not needed how you describe, hearthstone has set rotation to deal with this. There is no need for new cards to be this much stronger than several years ago.
I thought if you attacked and then played a hero card you could attack again? Am I misremembering or did they change that interaction? I don't play anymore.
without power creep there would be more variety and most importantly one wouldn't be forced to get the new stuff asap in order to stay competitive, which is the pay to win aspect of the game and main reason for its existence from a designer's perspective
LOL Brian contradicted himself. The fact people won't play with the new stuff is exactly why you don't want to go down this road because it becomes more and more a power creep game. The term FUN has ALWAYS for years been misused because people seem to always forget FUN ha to be two fold there are two players not one because yeah the winner is always more happy than the loser nobody has fun losing all the time. Another point missed is that nobody is saying we don't want people to use new cards and it is up to the TEAM to design cards in a way so we can have the best of both worlds and yes it is VERY possible. I will give a SIMPLE example one that has always been missing from the game "dumbass people on the HS team" and that is having cards that have ANSWERS to other card plays. This has forever been a problem players cannot react to MANY cards in the game how on earth does that promote interaction competitive play and player versus player when you add cards that contradict the very design and purpose of the game?

That boat play was amazing 😂
So many pirates, the boat SANK!
Making Warrior work... I can dream. I've spent more time than is healthy on the same pursuit...
I dont like the quest so much, but seeing someone beat druid with theothar and turn 5 scales makes me so happy
Man the powerful equipment he kept getting back to back with only 1 whiff was a little nutty

Well it's a new pirate warrior variation

Power Creep is bad when it's constant. It makes actually on-level expansions weak, like Ratsakhan.
