The song was 1st recorded by the Apple records band Badfinger. It was written by the band members Tom Evens and Pete Ham. When Harry recorded this one, Tom and Pete were invited to hear the playback before it was issued and the story goes that they both broke down and cried at the beauty of Harry's rendition. Harry wrote the song One which the Three Dog Night had a hit on, and Cuddly Toy which the Monkees recorded. He did a lot of stuff for other artists. His version of the song One is classic. I also loved his love song to his desk called My Old Desk. He did a song called Joy in which you will hear him sing "Joy to the world was a beautiful girl, but to me Joy meant only sorrow" He did a beautiful Christmas song called Remember. I loved his background vocals for Ringo Starr on the song You're Sixteen. I recommend you check these out.
Ahh this takes me back to my very young days in the 70s when I was (if you can believe it) innocent and romantic, and I bloody loved this song. Many years later, I now find the romantic intensity very OTT. But you are right, he has a beautiful voice and this is the definitive version, Mariah and her vocal gymnastics can bog off...
I bloody love this song!!! Can’t livvveeeeeee if living is without youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu 😍 Reminds me of a break up I had, I was living Without him! He was not living without me! Unlucky 😂
Hi Lainie! Wow! A fast trip back 50 years! (Released 1971) Fantastic song and lots of memories. Yes, Mariah does a version\cover of it. It's not bad. Thank you for "Reacting" to this original version and thank you to Thoru(?) for suggesting it. You might have heard "Everybody's Talkin'" (from Midnight Cowboy).
Actually, Harry's version is also a cover. It was written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of Badfinger, and was originally performed by Badfinger in 1970. Here's the real original version: ua-cam.com/video/49dquH8tn6E/v-deo.html
Nilsson and his producer Richard Perry had an argument over lunch and then remembered they had the studio time reserved for this song. Harry went in and recorded the vocal tracks for this in one take. So many studio musicians enjoyed working with Harry. That piano track was laid down by Gary Wright, who went on to give the world the "Dreamweaver" album.
A lot of people who like this song also relate it to Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" .... Make sure it's the long version and not the cut version without the piano solo.
Hi Lainie I would like to see you react to Janis Ian singing Seventeen ..many years ago this struck a chord with me and probably lots of young women and she has a lovely voice x
This is a cover Harry Nilsson did of Badfinger's song Without you!! Pete Ham and Tommy Evans of Badfinger wrote this! Pete wrote this song about his girlfriend Bev!! Nope not Mariah Carey and not Harry Nilsson original either!!!!
Love Harry Nilsson! The Nilsson Schmillson album came out when I was in high school. Just about everyone I knew had this album. Harry also spent a great deal of time with John Lennon during “the lost weekend” which lasted about 18 months❤️

Right you are! I missed that.

I love your Irish accent, if you are Irish. Your channel is awesome 👍. Keep up the great videos.
Ah thank you. Sadly I'm not Irish. I have a Mackem Accent which means I'm from Sunderland in the North East Of England :D

Great Post. Thank you.
You want on a tangent with the beard observation. This was height of hippy, early 70s, the guys were pretty hairy.
Good job Lainie! Harry was known for his voice.
Way better than Mariah!
Mariah was a baby 1yr 5 months old when this song came.
I love your reactions 😊
Thank you 😊
Listen to Harry Nilsson singing COCONUT or JUMP INTO THE FIRE
You have a good ear Lainie. One of his most beautiful songs is "The Moonbeam song" Please do that
Harry covered this in 1972 Mariah did it in the 1990s!!
Mariah was only like three years old when this was released LOL
Mariah covered it, badly. But Harry made it the hit that it is. No need to even chat about Mariah. Harry owns this song.
a still like the original badfinger, maria rubbish made a mess of it
she also made a mess of eric carmen all by myself
Do you take no pleasure in this song?
Yes. I think it's s beautiful song
