VFW prime example, it took my father 18 years of submissions and being turned down until someone realized they screwed up by denying him. They had to pay him over 3 years (3payments) 18 years of back pay at 100% disability. Thankfully he stayed on it and submitted every year. It’s almost like they intentionally deny in hopes the person passes away before they have to approve.
That’s the goal! They hope if they avoid, “lose” or need more or different docs, make multiple appointments, and just drag their feet you will give up or unfortunately, die and they keep business as usual!! The VA and SSA are the worst to deal with, notoriously rude, and incompetent.
Its dissapointing how little 100% disabled people get paid. Considering congress is paid so much and is worth so much even more and their sacrifice is nothing in comparison to people like george washington who actually threw down and werent just dumb like aoc 😂

I would NEVER go to a VA Hospital. I've also learned 2 new questions I'll ask every doctor I see at the first appointment; "Have you ever worked for the VA?" and if so, "How long did you work at the VA?" I went to a civilian hospital for a simple procedure, and for a family reason, my normal doctor couldn't perform the procedure aka minor surgery. The practice had a new doctor to the practice, perform the procedure. After the doctor FUBARed my procedure, in a follow-up appointment, I found out the doctor had worked for the VA in a nowhere location for 20 years. No doctor worth a dam will work for the VA for 20 years. After recovering for 3 months from the FUBAR procedure, I had to have the procedure corrected and had to pay for both procedures. If I had asked those 2 questions, I would have walked out, never letting the incompetent VA doctor touch me from the beginning.
Our entire healthcare system has potential but theres always these times where i wonder if like a woke up with a tumor growing straight out my forehead and went to the hospital theyd take forever to prove it amd forever to operate probably forget because the surgeon left they got a new one they left and theyre still looking for a new one. And you think to yourself "im glimg to die, this is like healthcare in india, there just hardly isnt" ill have to cut it out of my own Forehead
I worked at a public library, and had a veteran come in asking us for help getting reimbursed for his gas money spent driving to a doctor’s office that was approved for VA etc. I literally went through 3 different websites that all redirected to each other (in a loop), and had to call (with him) 2 different offices. Only to find out on the final call that the person he needed to get ahold of was out and had to leave a message. But my favorite takeaway was at the start of every call the person on the other end would say “Thank you for your service” like a canned line. I could see the visible annoyance on his face and thought to myself “this man doesn’t want you to thank him for his service, he wants you to *help* him. If any of you people wanted to thank him, try actually helping him.” I don’t know if he ever got reimbursed for that gas money. But for at least a little while I got to experience how shitty our government treats veterans, and he got to share his frustration with an outside observer.
It all depends on the VA district you live in, to be honest. The VA district that includes eastern Iowa, specifically around the VA hospital in Iowa City, consistently ranks at the top of the VA district list. I know a number of Vets that live in the district, and the complaints they have are typically limited to specific doctors either not listening to them or just being a-holes.
My Dad was a vet and couldn't even get help with medical treatment. They said his "illness didn't qualify." He had CANCER! And he was a combat veteran! I would get furious! Its ridiculous!

It took 20 years for me to get my VA Disability Compensation. I spent many years trying on my own. Once I decided to get a lawyer it was done in 3 years. The VFW misfiled paperwork and forced me to lose over 10 years of back pay. In that same appointment, the person "helping" me, said the 20% was fine, since that was what he got for his knee problem. I however was in a wheelchair and he could walk and do everything normally. So, I lost out on so much back-pay that I couldn't afford to get a house. Still living in the ghetto, but no longer the Albuquerque ghettto.

My uncle passed here a few weeks ago due to negligence of his assisted living home. He was a Navy vet, and he had so much trouble with the system to get his healthcare for his schizophrenia, and rashes he got on his leg because of some shit on his ship. They didn't even want to do a memorial for him since we didn't do a regular funeral. Thank God he had life insurance but not much.
Be me. In college, went to an anime club lock in at the student’s center. Hanging out around Super Smash Bros, waiting for my turn. Start conversation with huge guy who looks like he does mma. Turns out he’s training to get into mma. Talk martial arts and fighting. Me: “This is boring, wanna go spar?” Him: “Hell yeah.” Spend the 2-3 hours beating the crap out of each other. Been one of my best friends for twenty years now. This is how men make friends.
was high school for me and my best friend (and current roommate). we hated each other at first, and eventually said fuck it and went behind the schoolhouse and beat seven shades of shit out of each other for like half a fuckin hour, and have been like brothers ever since.
Man. Hearing Nic talk about pacing around talking to himself really helped me a lot. I feel like a crazy person so much of the time because I'm running for congress in 2026 and I spend a lot of time thinking about the morality and philosophy of leadership and government. When I'm home alone, I've spent a lot of time pacing around arguing against the talking points of my political opponents, genuinely heartbroken and enraged because just saying out loud what I hear other people defend and say literally leaves a bad taste in my mouth and makes my guts twist up. The level of evil that a government can commit with a smile is something that very, VERY few people can really grasp. Sometimes I can grasp it, most of the time I'm not brave enough to think about just how evil human governments can be. I really needed to hear that someone I respect does the same thing as me. I feel so much less alone and so much less crazy. I've cried tears of rage because of the knowledge that so many people's taxes have paid for the bullets that killed them, and how many people today are happy about it. Thank you guys. Love you Nic. My grandpa was a marine who served 15 years. He went to the VA for a sever case of appendicitis and had to wait in the lobby for hours. They ignored him and acted as if he was playing it up. The last time that man stepped foot into a hospital was when my grandma was in hospice. We waited so long that he started puking and couldn't stop. Once he got it under control, we took him to a civilian hospital and he was seen immediately and in surgery within 30 minutes. The doctors said if we hadn't gotten him there he would have died in the VA. Thankfully, he was alright and lived another five years. Another horror story I have comes from one of my best friends (who will remain anonymous) who served in the Marines. He was dployed twice as a grunt to the Middle East. He's seen and done some things that really messed him up in the head. He was told his diagnosis of PTSD wasn't valid because he didn't go through the VA to get diagnosed. They put him on a four year waiting list to be seen by a psychiatrist and at the last minute, they cancelled the appointment and rescheduled it for 9 months later. They're saying he isn't eligible for his benefits because he "didn't go through the proper channels". I never served, but if I did, I would demand better care for all veterans. I'll acknowledge that they are short staffed and underfunded, but that's thanks to greedy Uncle Sam always trying to do the bare minimum for everyone. I've got two more stories about VA f*ckery, but this comment is already long enough.

I had a colonoscopy/endoscopy in one appointment. I asked if they were going to touch cameras inside me like the painting of god and Adam. She said “no, we’ll do one at a time.” To which, I responded, “Can you do the mouth first?”
I spent almost 3 years fighting the VA for a rating when I was put out of service for a broken back, multiple migraines a week (after exposure to "something"), and PTSD. I had to have a Congressman intercede to force them to set up medical appointments. If a Veteran wants to and can afford to pay to have their claim processed, so be it.
Thank you guys for being so awesome. I just lost my mom. I showed her your podcast and she absolutely loved it. I am so happy she got to listen to you guys. It does mean a lot for guys.
I used one of the local county VSO. My rep happened to be a retired NCO who I had served with. She knew what was needed and helped file. Still took almost a year, mostly the VA dragging their feet, but I'm pleased with the outcome

Gandalf the Brown took a savory sip from his raspberry White Claw, glaring at the road from beneath his pointy hat and bushy white brows. The road in question, if it could even be called that, was riddled with potholes and almost entirely covered in trash so worthless the impoverished orcs didn't even bother using them to build houses with.
"What's the matter, Eli?" Donut asked, nursing his seventh White Claw since breakfast. "Your IED senses tingling again?"
The old man nodded. "Once you've been blown up a couple times and lived, you develop a sixth sense about these kinds of things. I think we're gonna have to go the long way."
"I don't do hills," said The Fat Electrician. True to his name, Nick was a rounder than average Hobbit, and already sweating despite it not even being noon and having only hiked a mile. "I'm a downhill kind of guy if you catch my drift."
"Dude," Donut slurred, "we've been walking to Mordorstan for six weeks. How haven't you dropped a single pound yet?"
"Remember all that food we used to have? I do, and the dwarves back there think I'm the second coming of Thor or something because it's 3018 of the Third Age and I know how electricity works."

"I promise I won't strike anybody with lighting the next time it storms, and they gave me food. It was a win-win."
The old man growled at the pair, warning them to shut up or suffer the wrath of his staff, which for the powerful and mighty Gandalf the Brown, took the shape of a shovel. The hobbits however either didn't notice or didn't care, and were soon joined by a third, leading a packhorse overburdened by too many guns to count.
Donut noticed their approach and pointed at the bottle in his hand.
"Brandon, where the hell did you get the whiskey?" he demanded. "I haven't had anything but White Claws since breakfast, and I'm starting to get the shakes."
"Well, they don't call me AK-Jesus for nothing," Brandon said, flashing an award winning smile. "You think if I turned the water in their well to wine they'd start a new religion around me?"
"Quiet, all of you," Gandalf shouted. "In case you three very stupid, very drunk hobbits have forgotten, we're in The Enemy's territory. He has eyes and ears everywhere, and we're probably being watched as we speak. We have no choice, we must get off the road and take to the hills."
"Yeah, screw that," Nick said, fishing around in his pockets. "Work smarter, not harder."
Donut rolled his eyes. He didn't see much of a point in working at all. He glanced at Brandon and saw him petting the newest addition to his collection.
"Dude, did you buy another gun? We can't afford food and you bought another gun."
Brandon nodded sheepishly, unsure whether to be proud or ashamed of himself. "It was only thirteen thousand coppers. I couldn't pass a deal like that up."
"We don't even have thirteen coppers between us! Did you trade him a gun or something?"
"Hell no," Brandon said, practically insulted. "I told him I didn't have the money, but he liked the look of me and said I could write him a check instead."
Donut looked at him incredulously. "A check? Dude, just how much money do you owe now?"
"Come on, man. It's just a check. It's not real money." He laughed to himself, shaking his head. "I should be a Congressman when I grow up."
"Ha, found them." Nick held up half a dozen coppers.
"How's money supposed to keep us from stepping on an IED?" Donut asked.
"Easy. Mordorstan is a communist country. They don't have food or money, and I'm about to double this entire country's GDP."
Although Nick could stand to lose ten or twenty pounds, or perhaps closer to forty, he was a deceptively strong, athletic man, and the coppers sailed over their heads. The moment the tiniest ring echoed through the air, the unmistakable sound of loose change hitting the ground, a mob of orcs emptied their dirt and cardboard homes and flooded the streets, and subsequently disappeared in an explosion of fire, dust, and debris.
The hobbits barely heard a thing of course thanks to a lifetime of neglecting ear-pro at the range, and had Gandalf not seen the explosions for himself, he might've just thought it was Nick passing gas again.
"About nine hundred and sixty eight pounds of explosives," Gandalf muttered, nodding in agreement with himself.
When the dust finally settled, there was nothing left, barely even a road. The bodies had been thrown through the air, mostly to the sides of the road, but a few still lingered in the sky, waiting to come back down.
Nick laughed, gesturing in front of him. "Dude, I'm like Moses parting the Red Sea. Get it? Red Sea? Blood? Communism?"
Brandon and Donut shook their heads, and finished off their respective drinks, being far too sober in the morning for this.
"It's just like Old Pappy used to say," Nick said triumphantly. "Why do something yourself when you can get a foreigner with darker skin than you do it for less than minimum wage."
Donut found himself nodding. "Makes sense. I like your pappy. Sounds like a good guy. Kinda sounds like mine to be honest."
While the two raised a toast to Pappy Electrician, Brandon was staring at the scene before him, mildly disturbed. A lifetime of watching LiveLeak before bed had mostly desensitized him to anything short of genocide, but there was still some compassion left in his heart and failing liver.
"Nick, weren't you a medic or something? Shouldn't you, I dunno, help them?"
"Do I look like a necromancer to you? Besides, I was in garrison the entire time. All I did was pass out Motrin like it's fentanyl in middle school and help guys with their hangovers."
"Yeah, well, look at Eli. I think he's having war flashbacks or something. That's how PTSD works, right? I didn't serve so I don't know."
Gandalf gave the trio a hearty chuckle. "Boys, I don't have PTSD. I have nostalgia. So long as I'm not the one blowing up, or any of my buddies, I'm as happy as a Marine in a crayon factory."
He shook his head, remembering the mission after a brief senior moment. "Quickly now, hobbits, before you become too drunk to walk. The ATF is only a day behind us, and not only do they shoot hobbits and dogs on sight, but also horses, meaning not even Sgt. Reckless is safe."
The old man took off running, surprisingly spry for a man his age, leaving the hobbits in his wake.
"Wait, hold on!" Nick said, fishing out a sharpie. "I can't believe I almost missed this." He jogged to the side of the road, already out of breath, and casually changed the sign reading how many miles left to Mt. Doom from kilometers to miles.
"There. We are now one step closer to putting an orc on the moon."
"Fly you fools!"

VFW prime example, it took my father 18 years of submissions and being turned down until someone realized they screwed up by denying him. They had to pay him over 3 years (3payments) 18 years of back pay at 100% disability. Thankfully he stayed on it and submitted every year. It’s almost like they intentionally deny in hopes the person passes away before they have to approve.
That’s the goal! They hope if they avoid, “lose” or need more or different docs, make multiple appointments, and just drag their feet you will give up or unfortunately, die and they keep business as usual!! The VA and SSA are the worst to deal with, notoriously rude, and incompetent.
Sadly, it’s not a glitch, it’s a feature.

I would NEVER go to a VA Hospital. I've also learned 2 new questions I'll ask every doctor I see at the first appointment; "Have you ever worked for the VA?" and if so, "How long did you work at the VA?" I went to a civilian hospital for a simple procedure, and for a family reason, my normal doctor couldn't perform the procedure aka minor surgery. The practice had a new doctor to the practice, perform the procedure. After the doctor FUBARed my procedure, in a follow-up appointment, I found out the doctor had worked for the VA in a nowhere location for 20 years. No doctor worth a dam will work for the VA for 20 years. After recovering for 3 months from the FUBAR procedure, I had to have the procedure corrected and had to pay for both procedures. If I had asked those 2 questions, I would have walked out, never letting the incompetent VA doctor touch me from the beginning.
Our entire healthcare system has potential but theres always these times where i wonder if like a woke up with a tumor growing straight out my forehead and went to the hospital theyd take forever to prove it amd forever to operate probably forget because the surgeon left they got a new one they left and theyre still looking for a new one. And you think to yourself "im glimg to die, this is like healthcare in india, there just hardly isnt" ill have to cut it out of my own Forehead
I worked at a public library, and had a veteran come in asking us for help getting reimbursed for his gas money spent driving to a doctor’s office that was approved for VA etc.
I literally went through 3 different websites that all redirected to each other (in a loop), and had to call (with him) 2 different offices. Only to find out on the final call that the person he needed to get ahold of was out and had to leave a message.
But my favorite takeaway was at the start of every call the person on the other end would say “Thank you for your service” like a canned line. I could see the visible annoyance on his face and thought to myself “this man doesn’t want you to thank him for his service, he wants you to *help* him. If any of you people wanted to thank him, try actually helping him.”
I don’t know if he ever got reimbursed for that gas money. But for at least a little while I got to experience how shitty our government treats veterans, and he got to share his frustration with an outside observer.
It all depends on the VA district you live in, to be honest. The VA district that includes eastern Iowa, specifically around the VA hospital in Iowa City, consistently ranks at the top of the VA district list. I know a number of Vets that live in the district, and the complaints they have are typically limited to specific doctors either not listening to them or just being a-holes.
My Dad was a vet and couldn't even get help with medical treatment. They said his "illness didn't qualify." He had CANCER! And he was a combat veteran! I would get furious! Its ridiculous!

It took 20 years for me to get my VA Disability Compensation. I spent many years trying on my own. Once I decided to get a lawyer it was done in 3 years.
The VFW misfiled paperwork and forced me to lose over 10 years of back pay. In that same appointment, the person "helping" me, said the 20% was fine, since that was what he got for his knee problem. I however was in a wheelchair and he could walk and do everything normally.
So, I lost out on so much back-pay that I couldn't afford to get a house. Still living in the ghetto, but no longer the Albuquerque ghettto.

My uncle passed here a few weeks ago due to negligence of his assisted living home. He was a Navy vet, and he had so much trouble with the system to get his healthcare for his schizophrenia, and rashes he got on his leg because of some shit on his ship. They didn't even want to do a memorial for him since we didn't do a regular funeral. Thank God he had life insurance but not much.
Be me. In college, went to an anime club lock in at the student’s center. Hanging out around Super Smash Bros, waiting for my turn. Start conversation with huge guy who looks like he does mma. Turns out he’s training to get into mma. Talk martial arts and fighting. Me: “This is boring, wanna go spar?” Him: “Hell yeah.” Spend the 2-3 hours beating the crap out of each other. Man. Hearing Nic talk about pacing around talking to himself really helped me a lot. I feel like a crazy person so much of the time because I'm running for congress in 2026 and I spend a lot of time thinking about the morality and philosophy of leadership and government. When I'm home alone, I've spent a lot of time pacing around arguing against the talking points of my political opponents, genuinely heartbroken and enraged because just saying out loud what I hear other people defend and say literally leaves a bad taste in my mouth and makes my guts twist up.
The level of evil that a government can commit with a smile is something that very, VERY few people can really grasp.
Sometimes I can grasp it, most of the time I'm not brave enough to think about just how evil human governments can be.
I really needed to hear that someone I respect does the same thing as me. I feel so much less alone and so much less crazy.
I've cried tears of rage because of the knowledge that so many people's taxes have paid for the bullets that killed them, and how many people today are happy about it.

My grandpa was a marine who served 15 years. He went to the VA for a sever case of appendicitis and had to wait in the lobby for hours. They ignored him and acted as if he was playing it up. The last time that man stepped foot into a hospital was when my grandma was in hospice. We waited so long that he started puking and couldn't stop. Once he got it under control, we took him to a civilian hospital and he was seen immediately and in surgery within 30 minutes. The doctors said if we hadn't gotten him there he would have died in the VA. Thankfully, he was alright and lived another five years.
Another horror story I have comes from one of my best friends (who will remain anonymous) who served in the Marines. He was dployed twice as a grunt to the Middle East. He's seen and done some things that really messed him up in the head. He was told his diagnosis of PTSD wasn't valid because he didn't go through the VA to get diagnosed. They put him on a four year waiting list to be seen by a psychiatrist and at the last minute, they cancelled the appointment and rescheduled it for 9 months later. They're saying he isn't eligible for his benefits because he "didn't go through the proper channels". I never served, but if I did, I would demand better care for all veterans. I'll acknowledge that they are short staffed and underfunded, but that's thanks to greedy Uncle Sam always trying to do the bare minimum for everyone. I've got two more stories about VA f*ckery, but this comment is already long enough.

I spent almost 3 years fighting the VA for a rating when I was put out of service for a broken back, multiple migraines a week (after exposure to "something"), and PTSD. I had to have a Congressman intercede to force them to set up medical appointments. If a Veteran wants to and can afford to pay to have their claim processed, so be it.
