How I like to fish Muriwai - finding banks and holes to fish and a bit of a fun day fishing them.

- I still get a few questions from you guys on fishing Muriwai, when and how I find my spots. Although I have already done a few vids on this I thought I would redo this one. I have mixed a couple together on what I look for, where and how I find them and have mixed a bit of fishing in with it. Hopefully for those that still are trying to read Muriwai this may help and hopefully you enjoy the little fishing sesh....

I really prefer to fish up till April /May then back in early Spring, we still catch fish through Winter on the Kontiki and get the odd fish on the surfcast while it soaks but that Spring through to late Autumn is best and better chance to catch - You still can have that great day and can get onto some Gurnard, Kahawai and Trev's if your lucky and there at the right time through Winter. Not sure if you have seen this vid on how I drive Muriwai? I have never had issues but make my decisions to drive it more on that low tide (stay through high if needed) then back out on the low.

How do you judge when that beach will be fishable? It's usually pretty rough when i'm out there?

I've been fishing and surfing Muriwai for a good 40yrs so between those two I have learn't a lot about the beach. We have even launched off it in our little 12ft tinnie on days that allow - and the fishing is superb.....
The times you want to try and fish it is 1mtr or less, obviously the smaller the swell the better so those days when the west reads no significant swell is defiantly when you want to head out there. I have seen days out there where you could even row a boat out due to no swell / waves at all - it's pretty surreal.
So best times is -
1 - 1mtr or less to no significant swell
2 - Preferably off shore winds SE-NE nice around light to 15knts. Personally I will still fish it at 20knts if the swell is under a mtr and it is East-Northeast.
3 - 1mtr or less with light onshore winds ok but can make it a bit sloppy especially anything over 10knts
4 - You will get days when the forecast will read E 15knts for a few days and 1mtr dying (perfect for heading out there)
So looking at all of the above - offshore winds with a mtr or less is fish-able but time it right it can be pretty much perfect (light offshore wind with no significant swell)
To be offshore out there it pretty much has to be blowing Easterly 15knts on the east coast - the wind dies away as it travels across the land so even sometimes when it's blowing onshore on the east you can arrive out west for it to be also onshore but would more likely be just an onshore breeze.

@@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing yep, went in near the horse park. I don't have a car capable of driving the beach unfortunately.
@@ryanhone8344 - algd was going to suggest come in there - head right and try do a 5-10min walk - go on the low tide so you can see some banks and even holes to come back to and fish that high tide.

How long you have to walk from.the carpark for a good spot if you dont have a 4wd?

The further you go the better it gets but that's not to say you don't catch fish closer to the entrance. Best thing to do if you have no 4WD is drive in behind the golf course so you are already away from most of the beach goers, you can even try for a Kahawai at the stream mouth.
There should be a few little banks and holes with in 5-10mns of walking the beach but remember the lower the swell the easier/better the fishing can be. Under 1mtr with light offshores or a slight onshore is a good day. Best to not fish it over 1.5mtrs you will just get frustrated.

Nice video mate. Got a couple of questions. What was the swell size for that day and at the end when you got the nice snap where you casting over that fist line of breakers. Cheers Adam
@@nzkiwi51 - my most favorable is no significant swell but you can't wait for days like that as they are few and far between. This day it was a mtr with big lulls and dropping so a pretty perfect day. The lower the swell the longer you get to fish that low tide bank before getting pushed off. The last Snap I caught was going back to a hole I had seen on my way in, with the tide getting high I had to move from the bank then fish the hole. I was just casting over the waves as the hole was roughly 50-60mtrs out - pretty much didn't have to get wet when casting.
