my therapist has a 48h period with an 85$ fee. Being 20min late also triggers the fee. One time I was around 25min late because of many odd reasons combining together. One of them was my social worker canceling our appointment / ride last minute. And I was very glad my therapist didn't charge me. It would have been a decent chunk of money for me and I tried so hard to get there on time. I stood there sweating and panting. And I would've been pretty disappointed if I'd be charged for being 5 minutes over the fee deadline with no fault of my own. But she was totally understanding, validating even and we still had a very good albeit short session. And that just increased my trust in her. On top of that, she visibly saw my effort to making it in time :D
Definitely resonated with the "resenting good families" portion. I grew up in the more ideal family (friends jokingly called us the Huxtables) where my partner did not. It can be hurtful in the past when he'd dismiss my triggers and complaints because he thought I "had it easy" but I also understand that it comes from a place of envy and pain. I do my best to understand his grief of his childhood in those moments and he does his best to differentiate in those moments now too. We can't change the past but he is a part of our family now

Yeah, I'd almost rather pay $5 or $10 more a session to cover a future missed appointment than be charged such a huge out of pocket amount.
