When I listen to this I think of Karkat painting himself on a wall all alone and then all the other trolls start joining in, and asking if their trying to hard on the painting. And when he says "scream it proud" instead of putting a grey cancer zodiac on his shirt he makes it red. So basically a really happy timeline with all the trolls coming together and accepting each other and themselves.

Everyone's discussing ships, and I'm just like "I was imagining him singing it with everyone...And he's asking if he's trying too hard to be a good leader. And they're all asking as individuals if they're trying too hard to do something." And when he says "cold blooded freak" I think of Eridan and Feferi since they're sea dwellers, and "hot headed creep" I imagine it's singing about him and Equius since they're both hot headed and kinda creepy.
I've listened to this so many times today I've lost count. It's just one of *those songs* that you keep coming back to.

People, there's nothing wrong with having your own opinion on what the song may be about. Music is about interpretation, and anyone can take it in any way they like. Whether the artist wrote it about something or not, O see it in my own way. An example could be the song 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' by Green Day. It is about Billy Joe's father passing away, yet when I sing it I think of it as a love song.
So I am the only one who's thinking this is Karezi instead of Gamkar?
I got reasoning.
1. "Well, it's hard for kids like us to grow up". Well, Karkat did have trouble growing up. But Gamzee got high and didn't have any trouble growing up. Terezi did though, since her lusus wasn't hatched.
2. "The world's puppeteering us"... I think we all know that Vriska mind-controlled Terezi into becoming blind.
3. "Hey, can you see straight?"...Do I need to explain this one?
4. "Maybe we need more silver paint" It's subtle, but it could refer to Karkat hiding his blood color (Making his sign gray/silver, instead of red), and Terezi being the one who found out first.
5. "Got your sight on the stars". Terezi DOES have a telescope... Or something like it, at least
6. "Am I trying too hard". Let's be honest. Karkat WAS NOT trying to get into a quadrant with Gamzee, but he DID try to get with Terezi.
7. "You're a hot headed creep"...Gamzee is not hot-headed, and not creepy, while Terezi is (Kinda).
It's totally Terezi (or maybe I just think that because it's my otp. Probably that...)

the song is "trying too hard" by Jason Iscariot. they actually kept a lot of the original lyrics :) jason iscariot also runs the "askkarkatvoice" tumblr and hes REALLY awesome. he actually worked with CantabileGato (broadway karkat) and sung in some of their songs!
I think it's about Terezi and Karkat paiting on a wall.
"Cold blooded freak" could describe Karkat as well as "Hot headed creep"
Or "Hot headed creep" could be Terezi, because some see her as creepy.
"Can you see straight?" could be referring to her blindness.

Even though I like to imagine him singing this to Terezi, him singing this to his friends in general is awesome as well!
When I listen to this I tend to be depressed when I bring out the Homestuck music, and this dong is my favorite to listen to when I'm upset or down because I can relate in so many ways to this song. I have been called a freak a lot so I like to think as a freak is a good thing..."we'll we all know when push comes to shove" this is a great saying, that, because of this song, I carry with me and I tend to use it often. As when someone is saying something to me (being rude or bullying) they make me feel down so out comes the saying and I end up being laughed at for it, but what they don't get, I outsmarted them with the saying....and I actually don't think the song is with Terezi, Gamzee, or Meenah, it's probably with Feferi because she /could/ be the leader for having the highest blood, hence the fushia paint, and grey paint as a metaphor to show that she's letting him lead because of the life he's lived, they have both had it rough in my opinion anyhow, I believe you can decide who the song is with so you can be happy with your choice of whom it may be! ^^

C ase yall don't know: This half of broadkar is a singer and musician named Case. Look up this song followed by that for the official version. Yes, they still make music. Yes, it's still incredible.
(Also: i just became a fan and probably messed some of the above information up, specifically which karkats Case voiced, but we know for sure it is one, and that they sing a version of this song)

I think the song is Karkat's "inspirational speech" that he gave to convince the others to troll the kids. If not, it's something like that, with the other voice ("Am I trying too hard?") being someone seeking his guidance. The other lyrics refer to him giving his help or advice to the others.
