The Detachable Double Chair was recently opened.

The lift was built completely out of LEGO Technic. Both terminals are equipped with independent Power Functions motors to propel the chairs along the rail, another Power functions motor was used to power the drive bullwheel. All motors are Medium-sized ones and are powerful enough to drive their assigned structures. A Mindstorms NXT with a reflected light sensor was used to sense the approaching chairs and open the load gates.
If you think the chairs look remarkably similar to the ones we used in a previous video, you're right, because we essentially only changed the grips and the safety bars :-)

The chairlift was dismantled months ago, I needed the pieces for my new lift (video is now online). The footage was shot in HD though, if you select the highest quality and take some screenshots, you may be able to get a long way. good luck!

How do the grips attach and detach?

I made a separate video on that, I put the link to in in the description . The grip is basically pulled onto the rope by gravity and rubber bands ensure it does not shift. I'm working on a different version that allows for steeper inclines, so stay tuned ;-)
