Welcome back to TO! Most Canadians like the Keg because of how consistent they are; you know exactly what you're going to get at the price point it's at. I've never left a Keg unsatisfied, but of course you are not getting the very best beef available. At the "casual fine-dining" price point in Canada you have Earl's, The Keg, Joey's, and then on a lower tier Montana's and Swiss Chalet and Milestones... at the higher-tier places, you can get a pretty damn good steak. In fact, I would put Earl's at the top of the tier in casual steaks in Canada, The Keg would be second. Earl's is close to being kind of like our Hillstone. I'll always make time for Hillstone's prime rib sandwich... one of the best, I think. Having a Keg nearby is great when you need to eat but all that's around is unfamiliar local restaurants of possibly dubious quality... like, I would never go out for dinner in Niagara Falls ON anywhere but The Keg, most of the restaurants there are just too shitty and overpriced, and at least at the Keg I know I'm going to get the exact same thing I would get if I was at their location in Medicine Hat, AB or Kelowna BC... it's the same everywhere. Plus an unreal view of the falls at night. Hy's is pretty overrated, IMO. For what you pay, you won't leave more satisfied with the beef than you do at The Keg. Very good table-side caesar though. If you want the local's choice.. it's Cote d'Bouef or their sister restaurant "Union" on Ossington Ave. CDB is more of a bistro than a steakhouse, and Union is more of a modern restaurant, but they both serve unbelievable steaks and great food in general.

The bread at the Keg is always hot and fresh, even if it is super busy. Back in my early 20s, we would go to the keg all the time for cheapish price steak with decent quality, and then fill up on the freeflow bread!
The Mansion is pretty cool. The last family to live there was the Massey family. They were a prominent family in Canada, but considering their wealth, it was a modest home. Hart Massey (I saw a page with his name in that ghost book) built Massey Hall, a concert hall built a couple of years before Carnegie Hall, and donated it to the city. He built some other buildings, including for the University of Toronto. They made farm equipment. You still see the name today in Massey-Ferguson tractors.
The keg is one of the few chains that’s amazing. Perfect steaks everytime. Sour dough breads to die for. Love it. I’ll pay the extra 20$ to go there over anywhere else
Love your videos, and so happy you came back to Toronto! As someone mentioned, you have your pronunciation down! What I would say about the Keg, is that while it's not on par with a premium steakhouse, it's always consistent and never a letdown.
Great Strongbow callout UA! I actually found Strongbow while living in Canada and dining with The Keg. You described the difference to American ciders perfectly. Enjoy Canada! I ❤ Toronto and that entire country.
Great Job UA, I grew up in Toronto and got haunted ;) many times (Thursday was Keg night for dinner after work). I would often do the Blue Baseball steak. Love and Light from Laos!
My first @UAEats premiere! Great job doubling up on steak for lunch and dinner. Glad to see that prime rib was a major improvement over the last one. I might end up going to my local Keg just to try that dessert. Thanks for the fun time! 🏈🦅
I am obsessed with that Billy Miner Ice Cream Cake. I am glad you got to enjoy it! I could totally go to the Keg just for that dessert. Totally worth the price.
I watched further and good thing you are going to Hy’s. It’s pretty solid but they only have one dry aged steak which is $$$$. The Beef Wellington is pretty good as well. But you came at a right time as we have a tax break (13%) on food until mid Feb.
Good choice UA. As a Canadian I come here for my value steak and it's open late. Typical order Tuna Tartare Keg burger, prime rib or rib steak (chicago style medium rare) or if they have kansas city bone in strip chicago style. Twice Baked Potato is a must here Billy Miner Pie for Dessert. You been to Jacob's, that's the best in Toronto. I travel a lot so across Canada the Keg is the most consistent, cheapest and open late. I default to here when I'm away and don't know where to eat especially in smaller Canadian cities. I would say I go to the Keg likely couple times a month on average.
Welcome back to Toronto. Yes, The Keg is a much cheaper Canadian Ruth Chris for us. Just an FYI - Porter does have a free shuttle from Billy Bishop that will drop you off at Royal York Hotel (Front St & York). Please take it as it does get really cold in our city.
love your takes and commentary, I like the keg especially their burgers and prime rib sliders.Wondering if you visited matty matheson's prime seafood palace
I absolutely love the Keg. Every time I’m in Montréal for a Canadiens game, I go before the game and wear my jersey in the restaurant. It’s a cheap steakhouse with the conversion rate. I get the baseball sirloin or the prime rib every time.
I’ve eaten at lots of steak restaurants in Canada and the USA but you can’t beat The Keg on value for the buck. Yes, you can get better but I love overall vibe of the Keg, not to mention their killer, Billy Miner Pie. Go there, you’ll enjoy yourself 😊
I couldn't agree more. I have eaten there hundreds of times. No pun intended but it's rare to get a bad meal at a Keg. Seeing the prices on some of the steaks UA orders at some of these places makes me nauseous. I will gladly spend my money at the Keg first.
Welcome back UA .I had a friend that worked at the keg mansion many moons ago and she claims she felt a presence every time she entered the room. I personally have eaten there many times one of my favorite places to go.
I feel like the keg back in the day did dry age their steaks because I remember going and the steaks having a very distinct flavour. Over the years the taste even though still alright doesn’t have that same taste.
Judging by (among other things) this channel, Canada seems to boast plenty of good restaurants. As a European, I'm curious about how Americans and Canadians view each other's food. Perhaps there's more of mutual appreciation than an outsider might suspect. Being from Sweden, I'd never deny neighboring Denmark has a great culinary tradition and I've come across similar attitudes in for example France towards Belgium. To keep a short story long, my father and I once rented a house in the area of Lille while on vacation in France and Belgium. Upon asking the French owner about which local restaurants he recommended, he replied "I always go to Belgium and eat, simply because the food is better". No French food chauvinism there! Maybe Americans and Canadians don't have a lot of opinions about each other's food, or do they?
I used to work at the keg! the breads aren't freshly baked in house but rather brought in. They're still very good quality bread though overall. Next time you go ask for a three cheese dip! instead of the garlic butter for the bread. Makes it 10x better.
I first ate at the Keg Mansion in the early 1980's. At that time it was the place to go and there were long wait times on the weekends. Since then the restaurant scene in Toronto has expanded greatly.
The Keg Mansion while a cool building, often is not on par with other Kegs in the city as it can be inconsistent (which is the key to Kegs as quality control is usually very good). One mistake UA is that you needed to order the Rib Steak and the double baked potatoes. Yes the bread is always hot and now you need to ask for butter as they serve what used to be their secret cheese butter.😉 The pice is less then half of most US steakhouses and remember you get all the sides too.
The Keg is not the best, but still really good and you always know what you are in for. I only have had the ribsteak. For the high end chain style, I prefer Chop steakhouse. The smoked Ribeye is my favorite, i recommend trying that one UA.
I live in Toronto and I think the Keg is great value for the quality. I like the prime rib when I am in the mood for it. I personally go for the rib steak. I love it. My wife will go for the sirloin. No trip to the Keg is complete without a piece of Billy Minor pie. Tell them it is your birthday or anniversary and they will give it to you free. They do not care if it really is they will just bring it to you. You said you were going to Hy's. I took my wife there for her birthday last year. We had a great meal there as well.

The Keg is about as good as you can get at the price range. I would go there over really costly steakhouses although they might be better, I just don't find my enjoyment justifies the cost difference. Consisency, quality, and good atmosphere plus the French Onion soup is why i really enjoy The Keg. Edit: rib eyes are not nearly as popular in Canada as the U.S., far more of a striploin country.
