When Chandralekha was released in 1948, I was nine years old and lived in Palaspe, a village 5km from Panvel which then was a small town 45 kms from Mumbai., The film was immensely popular and everyone in the village had seen it except my uncle Bapu who had never been to a movie. Well, like all of us, one day he went to Panvel and saw the movie. What impressed us most from the movie was the famous Nagara (drum) dance.
Very happy you are seeing your.father's master piece again and again. I saw it long back. Thanks for showing.Ranjan, Raja kumari beautiful pair of those days. I liked drim dance scene made on large scale arrangement.🎩🎩
I am 73 years and am a citizen of Malaysia. I remember my parents talking highly of this film way back in early 1950s. This film played to packed 3 theatres in Kuala Lumpur for several months. I got to watch for the 1st time many years later in a re-release. I was entrilled even then.
In Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic), this film aired at the beginning of the 1980s in a shortened version called “The Two Brothers and the Beautiful Chandra”. I was seven years old then, but I remember the “drum dance” to this day; what a wonderful scene! I spent a lot of time vainly trying to find out the film’s original name. Thank you very much!

Previliged to watch this movie on June 11th 2020 in Dallas USA. Its a perfect movie made decades back. Direction, dialogues, music photography. All the actors worked hard in their diction.
In this film, SS Vasan, hailing from Tanjore, included a folk dance, Bommalattam, (dancing horse) famous only Tanjore. I was raised in Tanjore, I have seen bommalattam many times. Sundari Bai, sings in this dancing horse scene, her horse is a dancing horse, it can sing English songs, will eat only Indian sweets, halva, rasa gulla, gulab jamun and almond pudding. It will not eat grass or horse gram. Its price is 4000 gold coins. Agreed? She sells her horse to a jester. For the benefit of poor people, who cannot afford to go to a circus show, Vasan hired Kamala Circus, which gives very exciting gymnastic exercises. During my younger days, I watched with excitement, a circus show by Kamala three ring circus. MD Partha Sarathy, in charge of back ground music, used a rare instrument, Jala tharangini. When Raja Kumari brings food for M K Radha, the Gemini orchestra played a rare raga with flutes and violins, "dwijavanthi" which is played when a person is in a happy mood. To show fear and sadness, Partha Sarathy chose, rag Charumathi, played on the flutes and violins. "Mysore nagari Dance", beating big drums with a certain rythm, performed during Dussera festival, is shown at the climax scene, with a slight difference of having girls dancing, Bharata Natyam, Kathakali and Kaththak on the big drums. Solders coming out of these drums, reminded me of trojan horses. Wonderful music, dance and acting.A magnificent movie. AVM Chettiar adapted the drum dance, on a small scale, in his 2 films, Nam iruvar and Penn.

@@tnpscvetrikani2417 Director and producer, yes. Some of the actors are native Hindi speakers and even the South Indian actors and actresses are speaking Hindi (maybe some dubbed?). Maybe the dances are from the original Tamil version with dubbed Hindi (not sure), but the dialog in this version is Hindi, with maybe some of it dubbed. "The Hindi version of Chandralekha was Vasan's first film in the language. For this version, Vasan re-shot several scenes and used a slightly different cast. Agha Jani Kashmiri and Pandit Indra wrote the dialogue for the Hindi version, while Indra and Bharat Vyas were the lyricists. my Grand Father shown me this movie and we enjoyed together many times before 25 to 30 years, again many times I have seen this movie in last 2,3 years to show my children..
Indeed, this movie Chandralekha (produced in the 1940s) is a very good movie! What, this movie itself is nearly 80 years old? I watched this for the second time in 2024, when my age is 82 😮I recollected my first watch perhaps I was some 10 years old in my then small town Udupi! What great movies they made in 2:25:54 the olden days!!!
The Original Tamil version of the film is nearly 3.5 hours. Looks like the Hindi version is trimmed down. Anyways, a great movie from the South, and kind of first PAN Indian movie.

Hehe, well of course you'd prefer the Tamil version. But this film is very important for being the first to become a hit throughout the entire country. They're both pretty much the same film and I believe the dances are identical (although I could be wrong). The dialog was refilmed , in Hindi the second time around. Isn't the Tamil version available here on UA-cam? Let me check... Raj Video Vision has an inferior version (wrong aspect ratio, among other things) here: ua-cam.com/video/iLI9H96Gc80/v-deo.html Maybe you've watched it already, if not many times in the past. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
I was surprised to read the comment, here, by one guy, Shahid Pervaiz, written by this guy 8 months ago. He used English alphabets to write Hindi, here is the translation of what he wrote. When there were, Rajkumar (17 years old when this film was released in 1948) Rajkapoor (19 years old), Dev Anand (20 years old), Dalip Kumar, Yussef Khan ( 21years old) Shahid Pervaiz says he did not know from where SS Vasan brought such unknown, not famous, or publicly not recognised people as heros and heroines. Was SS Vasan blind not to notice these people were there? When Chandralekha was started for shooting,in 1943, the above guys were too young. They were not popular then. Ranjan, MK Radha and TR Rajakumari might have signed the contract well before the shooting started. One person ticked a thumps up for this comment. One other person, Archana Arora (5 months ago), replied, "it was made in south". We know SS Vasan spent a fortune to produce this magnificent film, which was world wide accepted as one. Pervaiz is nobody to say whom SS Vasan should have chosen. It is not acceptable that this film was made in the south, as Archana says, SS Vasan gave Uma Devi (Tun TUN) all the songs of TR Raja Kumari to sing, Uma Devi was not confident to sing the songs; she herself accepted that she had no capacity to sing such songs. Vasan asked S Rajeswara rao, the Music director to work hard on her to make her to sing the songs. Where does the justification that this film was made in the south? Is Uma Devi a South Indian? Let Pervaiz express his dislike for Southern actors in his own channel, not here. Any way, the two heros were very popular actors, Raja Kumari, came from a very honorable family, dedicated to the temples. She excelled in singing the Karnatic Music and was an excellent Bhrata Natyam dancer. She was the super star in those days. She & SS Vasan hailed from Tanjore, a temple town, and I was raised in Tanjore as well.
Thank you for that translation. Of course, both versions (Tamil and Hindi) were filmed in the south, at the Gemini Studio in Madras (Chennai). The Hindi language version is only somewhat different from the Tamil version. Wikipedia has a long article on the film: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chandralekha_(1948_film) "The Hindi version of Chandralekha was Vasan's first film in the language. For this version, Vasan re-shot several scenes and used a slightly different cast. Agha Jani Kashmiri and Pandit Indra wrote the dialogue for the Hindi version, while Indra and Bharat Vyas were the lyricists. They're both pretty much the same film and I believe the dances are identical (although I could be wrong). The dialog was refilmed , in Hindi the second time around. Isn't the Tamil version available here on UA-cam? Let me check...
Raj Video Vision has an inferior version (wrong aspect ratio, among other things) here:

Maybe you've watched it already, if not many times in the past. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
But look at the dialogue delivery in Hindi by Tamil actors of those early times. That tells a lot about the capacity of southerners.

Wikipedia has a long article on the film:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chandralekha_(1948_film)
"The Hindi version of Chandralekha was Vasan's first film in the language. For this version, Vasan re-shot several scenes and used a slightly different cast. Agha Jani Kashmiri and Pandit Indra wrote the dialogue for the Hindi version, while Indra and Bharat Vyas were the lyricists. Rajeswara Rao, who composed the soundtrack for both versions, was assisted by Bal Krishna Kalla on the Hindi version, while Parthasarathy and Vaidyanathan composed this version's background music. The Tamil version was over 18,000 feet (5,500 m) long, but the Hindi version was edited down to 14,495 feet (4,418 m)."
Fortunately vyjaysntimsla is still alive on chennai inher 80 s We can verify from her every fact?!
