    Avada Kedavra is EXTREMELY difficult to perform and the person casting it must truly want to murder that person. Otherwise, it will do nothing. No one is just able to say it at any time. You need to genuinely, really, want that person dead, right there, by your hands. That is why it is rare.

    • @sylviagreybe672

      Yes, and also sometimes the death eaters just opt for something quicker and less permanent. They don't always want to kill. Except Bellatrix, she's barking mad. The death eaters also have been ordered by Voldy not to kill Harry as he wants to do it himself. They can kill anyone also though. And for regular people, well Avada Kedavra is not only permanent, it's illegal. You get a life sentence in Azkaban for it.

    Ron is not dumb, he is actually street smart. The screenwriter Steve Kloves just loved Hermione so much that he gave her most or all of his smart lines and made him seem dumb for comic relief when he was already funny but in other ways. He makes Ron seem pointless and makes Hermione perfect by taking away all her flaws. Ron also gave Harry and Hermione a lot of information about the wizarding world since he lived there all his life and Harry and Hermione didn't, but Steve Kloves also gave those lines to Hermione even though she lived in the muggle world.

      That makes a lot of sense, but I still feel like it isn't enough of a good reason to justify its existence. @@HelloNewman Magic is not like shooting bullets. The spells coming out of the wand is basically an expression of the wizard's emotions, not like ammunition stored inside shooting out. It is very difficult to do even simple spells, it requires focus, concentration, practice and the fact that the person "means to do it". This is explained again and again in Hogwarts when they learn to do spells in class or for homework or DA or something. For example, you can imagine a wizard just repeating "Avada Kedavra" over and over again and pointing his wand around and his wand basically acting like Rambo's machine gun. But that can never happen because even to do it once is difficult, the ones after it , as Moody/Crouch explains in the 4th book, "wouldn't even give me a nosebleed".

    The killing curse is blockable, just not with magic. If you can get a physical item between you and the curse then the curse cancels upon hitting it. In the books, Dumbledore uses this several times when fighting Voldemort at the ministry. Voldemort was throwing it out like candy and Dumbledore was bringing statues to life or summoning parts of the destroyed walls and fountain to block the spells.

      The script writer made Hermione a better character (I mean, I love her), but he left behind many characters (Neville, Dobby, Ginny) to put Hermione on the spot light and in more scenes with Harry.

    I love this movie I just wish we saw more of the strong popular Ginny she is in the book, I wish I could say things they left out but I don’t want to spoil anything in case you want to read the books.
    Also, after you finish the movies you should take a test so you can know which house are you and know the real difference between the houses. The new professor, Slughorn, is a slytherin. Lockhart (movie 2 professor) is a Ravenclaw. Cedric (RIP) is a Hufflepuff and Peter (the rat) is a Gryffindor so the house doesn’t really define who you are.

    One example for why this is my least favourite Harry Potter movie, is that Burrow scene. They burned it down, adding nothing to the story, and adding a scene that wasn't in the books. The Burrow even comes back in the 7th movie if i'm not mistaking. They just added it, because they wanted some action in all that boring, exaggerated drama. Yes there was teen drama in the book, but it wasn't too much, and it was done well. In the movie it dominates the film and is very badly done
    Edit: It also adds a huge plot hole. In the books you can't just come there, there are protective spells stopping you. But if they could just come there in the movie, why did Voldemort not just show up and kill Harry?

    Slughorn buzzing, spilling beer on Hermione, and saying all hands on deck Granger... is the highlight of the entire series.
    Avada Kedavra is considered very difficult to cast both physically and mentally. Intention and desire to kill (passion) must be there as well. As a music analogy, think of it like trying to play a complicated chord vs. hitting an open string. In the middle of battle it sometimes is easier to just fling out easy spells. The movies DO NOT do a good job of showing or explaining that.
    The main issue I see... is that a gun would probably be better than using magic to fight and exists in their universe... Harry potter and the ar-15.

    12:38. Here's my take on it: In Order of the Phoenix Tom says to Harry it's not enough to know the spell you have to want it; and that is why everyone doesn't Crucio all the time. Same with the killing curse, like its not enough to just be angry, or to want to kill someone even, you have to want to murder them in cold blood to make the spell work. All spells basically work this way, which makes it super interesting that all spell success' and failures are essentially rorschach test.

    I've always thought of the killing curse conundrum in HP like this: Avada Kedavra is not only really difficult to cast, but requires a lot of magical "energy," not to mention it has to be verbalized, so the casting of it is less efficient than other spells which can be quicker, non-verbal, and just as deadly. Voldemort uses it all the time because he has exceptional stamina, and he's so filled with rage he has no problem casting it.

    "Why doesn't everybody use Avada Kedavra all the time?" - precisely the question that had been bugging me. Now, it does require a certain power level - I don't remember whether it has been spelled out in the movie, but in the book when fakeMoody shows the class the spell he says something like 'You could all point your wands at me and say the incantation and I wouldn't even get a nosebleed'. And we know why it doesn't work when Voldemort uses it on Harry. But the whole fireworks between Voldemort and Dumbledore in the fifth movie (for all the awesomeness of the scene) seem to be quite pointless, because why bother with flaming serpents and flying glass shards when you could just end it on the spot?

    People don't use the killing curse because:
    1. It requires a certain amount of power and skill
    2. You need to really hate and want to kill the person, otherwise its effects would only cause minor injury
    3. It is one of the unforgivable curses, so you would be sent to Azkaban as soon as you used it on a person.
    Spoiler!
    4. It would split your soul into pieces, like Voldermort's, and create horcruxes, making you no longer human and looking pale and ghostly, like voldermort, if you did it too many times.

  • @HygorBH
    @HygorBH 3 роки тому

    I know it's three weeks late, but I'll answer this anyway: The movies never explain, but in the books, it's stated that if a wizard kills someone else, their soul is torn apart, as Slughorn explained in the memories, but he didn't go into depth. Unless it's in self-defense or killing as an act of mercy, the killer's soul becomes damaged, and once they die, their soul will be condemned to damnation in the afterlife. Just because the Death Eaters are attacking, doesn't mean the good guys can start killing them in cold blood.

    When you asked about this Avada Kedavra spell and why they don't use it. It made me think about the battle between Dumbledore and Voldemort in fifth book and movie. In the book Voldemort uses this spell right away at Dumbledore, trying to kill him but the phoenix that Dumbledore has eats he spell and of course dies and returns, then he uses it more times and in one case Dumbledore conjures real life metal shield. That was, in the book, I think a way to show how powerful and fast is Dumbledore with his magic because anybody else would have died at that point.

    The avada Kedavra is a dark spell. Like the other two you need to wish the person pain/enslavement/death from the deepest of your soul, harry didn't manage to cast one at Bellatrix in the ministry. They also earn you prison for life. And more importantly killing (intentionaly) tears the soul and make you less and less of a human.

  • @anaiswhitney3891
    @anaiswhitney3891 3 роки тому

    The simple explanation to why everyone doesn't throw around the three unforgivable curses is because they'd end up in Azkaban. But just like a patronus charm it requires intent. Harry couldn't project one strong enough at first bc he couldn't focus on a memory happy enough to maintain it but then when Sirius invited him to live with him that was the happy feeling he used to power the spell when they went back in time.
    The unforgivable curses are the same. As shitty as the death eaters are Harry's intent is never to take a life which is why it would be pointless to use it. He'd have to REALLY and I mean REALLY want them dead. That's why he was able to use the cruciatus curse on Bellatrix right after she killed Sirius, the kid was literally enraged and wanted to cause her pain but then he snapped out of it.

    The last 3 movies although changed or missed much of the books story managed , like you pointed out, to keep in the spirit of the story more intact and the director did a good job at showing who these people are and their true characters. It is one of the best movies when it comes to acting, the movie score is again really good and in pace with the story and the intrigue is intense in this one. We also see a change in Malfoy which by itself is very interesting because we do not know where it leads but can begin to grasp.
    One thing that made me sad about it, well two things, the story does have Dumbledore picking up Harry at his aunt and uncle house and telling them off about the way they abused Harry and bullied him, which is rather satisfying. At last an adult calls them off for being a pair of abusers.
    The second thing was that in Dumbledore's memories Harry, and us, learn a lot more about Voldemort's past and his family .
    He is indeed the last descended of Salazar Slytherin, but his family was so bigoted towards muggles and even other pureblood families that they ended up marrying only cousins, they wanted to keep their blood the most pure possible and also retaining Slytherin's unique traits, one of them Parseltongue, speaking with snakes, so we see a memory of his grandfather, uncle and mother, all three on the verge of insanity.
    His grandfather , Marvolo Gaunt, was a very proud of his heritage man and a very violent man, his uncle was insane, cruel ( and only spoke Parseltongue) and his mum nothing but a pathetic figure who was abused and her skills with magic were very poor. They were extremely poor, living on a shack near Tom Riddle's family property hated and despised by everyone.
    His mother, Merope Gaunt was inlove with Tom Riddle but she was not only poor, but also ugly and shabby, Riddle makes fun of her. The two male Gaunts attack a ministry man and end up arrested in Azkaban leaving poor Merope at last free of her awful violent and dominating father and her deranged brother, she manages to give a love potion to Tom Riddle, They elope, get married and she gets pregnant, with time ,believing that Tom loves her she stops giving him the love potion and is devastated when he abandons her after the effect of the potion passes, destitute and broken hearted she gives birth to a boy and after naming him Tom Marvolo Riddle she dies, because she does not wish to go on living without her husband.
    They had two heirlooms from Slyterin himself, a ring and a locket, that Merope takes with her whe she elopes . Needing money she sells the locket at the store owner that we see at the start of the movie, he gives her almost nothing for it. Later in another memory we see Tom after leaving Hogwarts working at that same store, and the locket being bought by a rich old witch, who later on is found dead and the locket gone.
    This sounds random but it is important, because it explains a lot of what made Tom Riddle become Lord Voldemort, why he killed his father and despised his mother and also the parallels with love sick kids giving love potions to one another ;)

    In the books Avada Kedavra is presumably the most difficult offensive spell (with a known incantation) to cast and is rarely even used by Death Eaters. Only Voldemort is described casting it successfully (meaning it connects with the intended victim and they die) more than once ''onscreen".
    It is the only spell described as a jet of green light (no other light-emitting spell is stated to be green). If the jet hits the victim they die instantly with no visible sign of bodily damage.
    It cannot be blocked by a defensive spell, but it will fail if the jet of light hits an object (instead of connecting with a living person) or the jet of light is dodged. (Dumbledore utilizes both of these strategies while fighting Voldemort in the Ministry atrium).
    Even Voldemort doesn't seem to cast it non-verbally (without saying the incantation aloud first) so non-verbal casting may not even be possible (which would improve your chances of dodging in time).
    In the films Avada Kedavra has very different and inconsistently applied rules (as do many other spells in the films).
    Death Eaters regularly fire off jets of green light in rapid succession and non-verbally.
    They are parried many times by defensive spells, or the intended victim fires a spell back at the same time and the wands connect (wands are shown connecting several times in the films; in the books this only ever happens between Harry and Voldemort due to the relationship between their wands).
    Victims are inconsistently shown crying out in pain before dying, wincing for several seconds before dying, or even dissolving into ash. :P

  • @zanbarlee6190
    @zanbarlee6190 3 роки тому +1

    Well, it isn't completely unblockable; the movies just don't do it justice. They aren't blockable by spell shields, but physical objects stop them just fine. Dumbledore basically dominates Voldemort in their duel in the ministry because of his creative use of charms while Voldemort is using a one-dimensional killing curse that just keeps getting intercepted by animated statues. That right there, really, is the downfall of the killing curse. It is just a spell that kills. Against an opponent that knows how to dodge or is creative enough to use magic like micro-managing statues, transfiguring the environment, or conjuring huge barriers, the killing curse is really a lack-luster spell. It doesn't ruin the story; the movies just don't take the time to show its downfalls like the books do.

    Avada Kedavra is not used by everyone. It is explained that in order to use the Unforgivable curses, you really have to mean it. You have to truly want to kill and enjoy the act of taking a life in order to perform it successfully. Hence why they're called that way. The gang is distinguished from the Death Eaters and Voldemort by not having the same darkness and not seeking it. In Order of the Phoenix, when Harry goes after Bellatrix after she has killed Sirius, he tries to use the Cruciatus curse to torture her and is egged on by Voldemort to 'truly mean it', but he never goes through with it.

  • @susanmaggiora4800

    For spells like Avada Cadavra & Crucio, you really have to mean it, so you generally need a pretty dark heart. Remember when Harry couldn’t use the crucio on Bellatrix in the last movie? So the death spell is only for very angry, or accomplished wizards to use.

    Avada Kedavra isn't easy to cast. you must be powerful in order to do so. You also have to really want to commit murdering knowingly (usually fueled by hate, kind of like a Patronus is fueled by happy memories). and last it does damage to your soul. For example, how its explained in book, let say someone really wanted to kill but are not strong enough, they can cast it but the spell would probably just feel like wind or give the person it was aimed at a bloody nose at most. Also, in this movie its explained killing splits your soul, so using the killing curse will do direct damage to your soul, so you have to be willing to pay that cost as well. Also it can be blocked when they say Harry was the only one to survive it they mean the only person who was hit with it but didn’t die.
