And after a very long and seemingly endless restoration it is back, ready to inspire a new generation, amazing how many people were filming it during its first tests
brings back some memories,as kids we would see 3801 fly past our grans place at goulburn, grew up went to newcastle firing locos at port waratah during the course we went to broadmeadow lo and behold 3801 in for repairs what an imposing loco .
3801 sure is a special loco, very much like NZ's J1211, how long before it is back on track, our four year old grandson absolutely loves 3801 and sings the theme song from The Long Wire Fence.
once again KJ-Verada VR-Xi many thanks for your reply.nice to see the government of the day using their brains to stuff up a system thats worked for decades.just hearing a 38er puffing away reminds me of a weigh station at thornton [newcastle way] you could feel the vibrations coming of that loco as it shot up thornton hill. W
@TGs Train Clips: Given the 3801 and the 4472 (Flying Scotsman) ran in 88/89 for the Centenary celebrations, 3801 was involved in the Cowan Rail disaster in the early 90s, and visited Alice Springs in '92, your assertion there was 'no steam' in those 2 decades isn't correct. In addition, when it was being restored for the Centenary trips, it was located in Newcastle.
For a steam locomotive yes it did the Sydney - Newcastle trip in 2 hours 1 minute 51 seconds in I believe June of 1968 (would have been 2 hours dead if it wasn't for congestion on. The Newcastle end) but in 1988 an XPT shaved 6 minutes 4 seconds off the record. Going off references and history books on NSW GR I have.
Still a huge collection James. I guess you've seen the other stuff on UA-cam but have a look at my website and see if anything interests you. I'm working on new titles all the time. Just google belbinvideo
I grew up with this lovely train. It will always have a big sentimental place in my heart.
Always love 3801 streamliner steamtrain, legend!
Thank you Mr Belbin another pleasant train ride.👍

good news that loco is back after the restoration
Steam loco looks charming, with most melodious music.
No problem at all, James. If you need any particular footage don't hesitate to ask and I'll see what I can do. Thanks, mate.
Nice big hill!

my great grandfather helped build 3801
I love the shot at Wondabyne
Yes, the tele shot from above is Cowan Bank with the Hawkesbury River in the background.
KJ-Verada-Xi many thanks for your reply.
Can't wait for the restoration to be completed!
You are going to have a long wait, unfortunately.
Where was the last shot taken?
2:07 is that in Mt Colah?
I wonder if the New Zealand Railways J class had an influence on the streamline design. They were both influenced by the same American locomotive .
My father used to drive and fire on this beautiful engine in the 80s and 90s. He was based at Broadmeadow. Anyone know Jerry? Be keen to chat...
