I love how DJ Dusk introduces Madlib as part of the Likwit crew and Madlib just gives the crowd the L sign, they probably thought he was calling them losers lmao.
I love how all the dj’s in the background are intently watching every move cut chemist makes and not moving to see how he’s using his turntables when he plays. Madlib has a party vibe that people get loose to and everyone becomes the audience of the same spectacle. but cut chemist has a technical ability on the turntables that the other dj’s find more ‘fun’ than ‘partying’ and being just another attendee of a party

yes, if this a dj battle... cut chemist slay him complete...no question cut chemist is a both a super good producer and ultra good dj...no chance... but excellent show super good sound...
it annoys me after all these years to rewatch this and realize that theyre both just scratching over a series of premade beats played from some equipment thats under the table. first track, you see cut chemist on a 2 channel mixer and both channels closed and hes opening the fader to the claps even though the record on that table is a different record from the one that was playing when the claps actually came into the beat. at another point you see madlib duck under the table, the beat changes and he stands back up still holding the mutlitrack recorder in his hands. looping pedals werent a thing at the time this was recorded, and vestax 05's (at least the one i owned) didnt have an fx send (even if you were looping thur another means like a digital delay pedal). for years i believed everything they were doing was SOLELY on the decks when i first got interested in djing and production, and i would get so fucking aggravated that i couldnt do shit like this with only vinyl to find out well obviously neither could they.
yes the young madlib seems to duck down to change something and playing beats from the emu sp 1200 and cut and scratch from turntables. to say this is cheating is something like saying producers who do heavy chopping of samples that they tape and stitch together in a loop is [cheating] or that it facilitates the making process or producing of a beat since 90% total was already done by another artist from another decade. that's how I feel sometimes when u find out a producer u may happen to like doesn't write shit, everything good about that producer comes from a sample from [another artist or producer,] or comes from a software full of ready made music. all u have to do is select and program. not to mention ghost writers of the industry
how old is this footage? i know it say 2012 but it looks like its a bit earlier than that... the fuckin set was ill but i cant front i feel like the oh no vs exile was a lil more lit
Madlib got the beats, Chemist got the cuts.
