In his 2002 Red Bull Music Academy lecture, Madlib revealed the secrets of his favourite studio equipment, the story behind his Quasimoto alias, his work as Yesterday’s New Quintet, and more.
Since the early ’90s, the reclusive Madlib has been producing music at a relentless pace. Whether he’s working with artists like Freddie Gibbs, MF Doom or Erykah Badu, collaborating with the late J Dilla, or working under one of his own aliases, like the drugged-out party creature Quasimoto, Madlib has carved out his own idiosyncratic corner in the massive hip-hop universe.

It’s a photo out there circulating
They thought madvilliany would sell 40k and it did 150k, pirated everywhere, and changed hip hop
That’s amazing wow
26:50 “yeah, I can do that too” 😂
this man is amazing. the yesterdays quintet is the coolest idea ever; i will also be doing this.
this is so typical of the artist vs hobbyist paradigm: artists just make shit with whatever is near them, and they don't question it too much -- they are just channeling expression. hobbyists/gear-heads think that by getting the right drum machine or recorder or whatever that they might be able to get a similar output...but they lack the artist part -- just make shit
Exactly
Yes yes
Madlib is doper than dope! Seriously!
He seemed happier here then the 2016 one.
Janak Naidu yeah maybe cause his homie was interviewing him and not that other guy who kept asking the same question over and over again 🤣
@@Santana_Art true

He was working on what would become some of his most well known works. Had fresh tracks with Doom, exciting time!
Omg madlib performing in a Quasimoto suit. Hilarious.
When?
Damn I’d be so happy to find a 303 for $200
ill be honest... thats almost impossible :( Today they go for like 500-700!
Get the 404mk2. It has the 303 vinyl effect
you can get a behringer version for like 150,
@glenconnolly5513 not the TR 303 the SP 303 which is a sampler not a bass synthesizer
@@JEFFMAN90 I ended up finding a modded 303 for like 200 but I also have the mk2 lol

Cut Chemist in the house!! 23:17 !!
I like the older Redbull interview better I mean dude had Shades of Blue , Madvillain,Jaylib in the works and still making shit 02 - 05 were the best years . Plus J Dilla was still alive so aura was good. Then his homie interviewed him not that other dude
mushroom binge , where are you from madlib? saturn
The very life of me feels like it depletes from exhaustion from asking about a random beat Cd from this era that hasn’t thought to see the light of day . Where some people think reflection of life and it’s troubles are through a psychiatrist. I’d rather listen to Madlib and the way I would perk up when certain beat tapes just popped up on you tube . It’s like God telling u . Heaven is more than u could have imagined
looks like madlib was high af
doubt it, he said the weed in Brazil was trash lol
lol i remember the saw this video with low quality. thx for the upload.

Yes! Real beat heads need this history
Hey guys there is A RARE Brazilian beat that plays on the Keepin Time documentary after Madlib made that famous loop . What kinda singing is that . If the groove that played afterwards is on the tapes , YIKES!!

I heard from Seth at Free Lunch studio that Mad cant play any instruments. He owns them but cant play them but tries.
Who did he say?sun ra and rza
He meant Sun Ra tho, adding za at the end of names is a common thing
what is the song at 17:43
The austism is real. I love Madlib tho
He’s probably high or tipsy. He doesn’t act like this in other interviews. Him being a quiet guy, I’m sure he’s shy.

17:46 tf kinda move is lib doing
its the key move to getting a tight kick fr 🔥🔥🔥
Don’t question it 😂
