I think the worst anyone suffered was losing a few toes, I think. And at the time, even successful missions usually had more casualties than that!

I've got a letter from Byrds 1928 1929 expedition, it's written by Herman Melvilles brother, Fred Melville. Fred Melville was the captain of Rear Admiral Byrds ship,S.S.City of New York!

I have the utmost respect for Ernest Shackleton and his men. What they endured and lived to tell simply puts modern day explorers to shame, what with GPS, Satellite Phones, Snowmobiles, and massive support infrastructure in place, these were REAL men.
Another reason it's probably so well preserved is that it's made from wood and wood doesn't rot unless it's in contact with air, it was common practice a long time ago to place logs under the water in lakes or ponds until ready for use.
If Shackleton were a character in a fictional story, I would think the writer had been too heavy-handed with the heroics. What a legit legend Shackleton was!
