Honestly I thought I'd imagined these movies in some kind of mad fever dream as a kid before this went up. I always remembered a bunch of Robocop sequels after the third movie but I could never convince anybody that they existed or what the actual fuck I was on about. Thanks for proving I'm not crazy.
About the costumes, I seem to recall that they only had access to the molds from I think it was either Robocop 1 or The Series so that's why neither actors fit properly into their costumes, because they couldn't create two new molds that would have fit them better.
I stumbled across the full DVD set of Prime Directives in my early teens and already being a huge fan of Robocop I I’ve watched through the entire Prime Directives series several times over. I found the best way to enjoy these is to turn your brain off, don’t expect anything and just enjoy it for what it is.. an incredibly low budget passion project with some great moments and lots of terribleness. If you compare it to all other robocop materiel you will instantly hate it so just enjoy it for what it is. I respect that fact that somebody actually made it.
Great insights, banter, and the added touch of little humorous post production bits. You guys also have the best channel logo on all of UA-cam. I'd wear that on a T-shirt.
Page Fletcher got a LOT of hate back in the day on the Archive forums, but I always really enjoyed his scenes as Murphy. I chalked his bad RoboCop up to Julian Grant being a piss poor director. When your lead actor/character starts walking around like he's got a load in his pants you should give him some *direction.* Jussayin. It's a shame Richard Eden wouldn't come back. Supposedly he was a diva about it, but I don't trust the production crew on that story anymore.
Hello gents, any thoughts on The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? It’s not a film I recall yourselves or Ollie covering in the past? From what I remember it was plagued with production problems, sets flooding in Prague, Connery not getting on with Stephen Norrington and the added character of Tom Sawyer. Richard I know you appreciate and understand the works of Alan Moore and after watching your most recent channel I think this would be a cracking one to do? I personally recall seeing the trailers back in 2003 and thinking the production values looking incredible but alas it was not to be. Disappointing considering it was from the director of Blade. Good luck with all the great work. Cheers, Paul.
Over the past couple days in my self-quarantine at home; I watched the entirety of "Robocop: Prime Directives" on UA-cam. That was six hours of my life gone that I will never get back. *SIGH* The acting, directing and some of the production values would shame a school play, and Page Fletcher was woefully miscast as Robocop (he's adequate in the flashback scenes as Alex Murphy, but even then he's like Aidan Quinn's less talented brother). Another detail that this Yank noticed that threw out of the story was the Canadian accents, now I love Canada and I love Canadians; but you never buy that this is Detroit (or even Delta City!) with all these purported Michigan residents saying "aboot" and "Eh?". It's Detroit by way of Toronto!
I'm almost embarrassed that I used to really like this TV film thing when I was younger, I'm so glad I've changed. That compilation at the start hahahaaa bloody awesome =P
You know its shitty when I found one of the dvds at a car boot sale for about £2.00. Only about a year after it came out! Although after seeing him more recently in Dark Matter I did think Anthony Lemke who plays Jimmy Murphy in this would make an awesome Robocop.
That part where all the police shoot him makes me cringe every time and thinking back to the first movie he didn't really flinch much whenever an entire Warehouse full of goddamn drug dealers were shooting
Oh my...I remember these being on the SciFi channel! These clips reminded me why I tried to forget them. Thank you for the laughs before work today! #Viva
I always saw episodes for this in crappy "4 DVD Packs" in charity shops. Always knew there were only 3 films and was so confused. Btw I hope one day you tackle one of the crappy Crow sequels or a Highlander film. You'll suffer but it'll be great to watch haha
Have you watched Upgrade? It’s really good, with a few daft moments, but it has some really interesting Cronenberg-esque ideas, & quite gory in places. It felt like a 90s sci fi film, because it had that look & feel all throughout from the cinematography, to the actors, & their dialogue.
Val Verde Broadcasting I’ll be looking forward to that, I enjoyed it a lot too, the silly moment for me was the sneezy bit, and some scenes where the vigilante seems to briefly defy physics when he activates STEM, but other than I really did enjoy the film. Also the creator for some reason reminded me of Gary Numan from the early 80s. I have an idea you could use for one of your future videos. Mark Kermode last year did a radio 2 episode on which he discusses on what the best movie closing credit songs were. But what do you & Duncan think are the worst movie closing credit songs? Duncan’s not allowed to choose Bond, as that’ll be cheating, plus we all know it’s The Experience of Love by Éric Serra.
YES!!!! That's the rest of my day at work sorted! Great work lads. Question for everyone, which characters legacy has been the most butchered by sequels, Robocop's or The Terminator's?
Another great discussion guys I remember watching these back in the day and they were a slog to get through they should leave it alone or get Weller back if the script is right
Guys, Normally I like your material. I'm a huge Robocop fan as well. It was a movie that traumatized me as a child and fell in love with when I reached adulthood. So I adore Robocop. When you guys talk about everything else Robocop you're much more generous but when it comes to Robocop PD it's like you want to shit kick it as much as you can. Ok we get it, you hate this, makes me wonder if it's so bad, Why did you watch all 4 episodes. When I watched Robocop Prime Directives I knew full on that there was a budget beyond Shoestring for this. They had $8 Million for 4 feature film length episodes. That's about 7 or 8 hours of footage. I knew to expect anything on the level of any previous films would be expecting too much. Basically what I see is people attempting to capture Robocop again like the original but having very meager resources, not only in equipment but staff too. I think ultimately what let Robocop PD down were simply very low amount of resources, the budget bit hard. I doubt Page Fletcher was their first choice. He is awful in the suit and also being way too short for the role. He had alot of ability, And his face did look good in the suit. I might have forgiven his lack of height if he tried to get the movements similiar to Peter Weller and John Burke, that is really his biggest sin. Where I do disagree with you is when Page has to act in the dramatic roles. I would argue he is better when he has to display emotions, 2nd only to Peter Weller. Like the scene you mock 'I want you to look into your father's eyes' I mean of course he'll be awkward, his world has been turned upside down once more, He is facing his own son whom is about to kill him, further more the possibility his decision to let his family believe he was dead, Might have been the wrong decision. For me it was a very touching scene. Also the scene where Murphy loses it after he shoots Cable and he howls a battle cry in rage as well as his face as he charges bone machine emptying his Auto-9 on him, also was powerful. The Drama and the dramatic performances were there and I feel very much neglected because people focus so much on how Page Fletcher moves in the suit. It's being unable to see the forest for the trees. What I feel really let the production down was the meager resources were simply inefficiant, not just in props but in staff. Julian Grant is simply not a good director, seems more eager to be as economical as possible rather then making a good product. Page Fletcher was not the best choice but I doubt with a production this cheap that many actors were available to begin with. And simply too many subplots in a script that goes nowhere. The film just screams cheap. The heart is there, But the resources aren't. I'll be very honest with you, I prefered Robocop PD than Robocop: The Series.
I actually bought the score for this series? It's a bit trash but I like the concept of using a western style score. Sadly it's all canned and done with samples but I listen to it and dream of what could have been. I had to contact the artist about a decade ago to find out where to buy it!
