    I've been using mild dish soap and a sponge lately after not using it my whole life I learned that the reason people say don't use soap is because soap used to contain lye and that would destroy the seasoning immediately I would suggest trying the soap method

    Use dish soap and water. The seasoning (polymerised oil into the pan) won't get removed from some messily soap. It's an old wives tales when soap and lye in it, which did strip pans as it was extremely basic.

      @@D0nt_Tread_On_Me You are 100% wrong. Modern day detergent will do nothing to your seasoning because it's polymerized. Only a lye based soap will damage your seasoning and I truly doubt you have lye based soap in your kitchen.

      @@D0nt_Tread_On_Me that’s bad/incorrect/outdated information. These types of “claims” come from a time when lye was more ubiquitous in dish soaps. Dawn, not so much. Use soap and keep your pan clean.

    Please note how shiny his pan is. When most of us are new to cast iron, we get a pan that is coarse. There is absolutely nothing wrong with cleaning and smoothing your cast iron. If people can restore a rust bucket pot or skillet to good cooking order, you can scrub and smooth that rough surface! Just do your iron right and season it again.

      I use something similar, they sell them in any supermarket. If something is really stuck on there I’ll usually put some water in the pan right after cooking, bring it to a boil, let it sit for 2 mins then hit it with the mesh then reseason.

    Did a hamburger steak with gravy this week but ate first. That gravy dried and took some work to clean out. I ended up using kosher salt, thankfully had some, elbow grease, a green pad and oven heat to get all the cooked on gravy off it.
    It looks alright but I’m not sure as I smell the spices still. I’ll find out tonight though.

    • @SaintRubicon
      @SaintRubicon Місяць тому

      You are absolutely correct about the soap. The whole "dont use soap" was back when soap was much more harsh and made out of lye. Modern gel dishsoap has been proven to not affect your seasoning. I would even argue that using a scrubber does more damage to your seasoning than a light scrub with dawn and a sponge. Its never done me and my family wrong.
