You are so right about all of these, particularly loving the piece you're learning - that is key. Also your brilliant tip regarding practising difficult bits 7 times to ingrained into muscle memory is vital...and I can categorically confirm it works - and how rewarding that is! I’ve hit that brick wall hard and largely self-taught with a handful of teaching over the last 30 years. I can’t advance into late intermediate or sight reading with ease. Currently, I’m going to ground level in scales and arpeggios and intending to get deeper in the circle of fifths.

Hi Jazer, thanks for another awesome video! Mind if I ask a question as a complete beginner? I've been watching some UA-cam videos where they suggest rotating the wrist to support the pinky finger while playing. It seems to improve the sound, but I find that adjusting the wrist angle leads to my fingers constantly shifting from their correct positions. I've noticed you don't seem to use these wrist movements in your videos. So, I'm wondering, is it really necessary? Or perhaps you could even create a video on how to position the wrists correctly. Thanks in advance! Hope my question makes sense.
You seem so passionate about piano after 10++ years of playing. Maybe you can share some tips as to how to maintain enthusiasm after all these years. Sometimes I find that the number one reason we quit playing is we cannot find a way to feel the same excitement as the first day we decide we want to learn how to play a music instrument.

"Fun sight reading".......hmmm. I have a different question. I notice we have a similar book library and I'm guessing I'm not the only one wondering about some of the illegible titles. Maybe a liszt could be placed in the description? I have a title I highly recommend for you: THE WINNING EFFECT, by Ian Robertson.

Working my way through the first Alfred book. I had wondered if I should be trying for perfection on each piece so your comment on that was helpful. I think I probably get to B+ or close to,it on most pieces.

Love to play piano
Hi Jazer, love your videos. And i do have a question. "If you want to be an extremely good sightreader you have to memorise all the notes within bass- and trebleclef, but how many ledgerlines on each clef should you be able to instantly read by sight?" The reason i have this question is because i dont see the point in for example learning and memorising more than 5 ledgerlines on each side of each clef because music are rarely notated with more than 5, or at least i haven't seen that many pieces with single notes more than 5 ledgerlines away from the clef. I just want to hear your thoughts on this topic. Thank you :-)

41 years old, took like 5 lessons as a kid, trying to start up by myself. This is encouraging. I’ve always loved the piano but scared of failing.
Maybe think of it as learning, certainly not failing. You will get there, it takes time and patience.
I’m 65 and just starting back…and I only took lessons for about a year when I was in my mid 40’s. I’m doing it for me…not to be a performer for others…that’s too much pressure!

If you are learning a new piece, at what point do you start using the metronome in practice? It seems to get in the way, in the beginning, when I'm trying to figure out the notes. So maybe I should wait until I'm playing the piece with more confidence before trying to use the metronome?
Here’s what i have bee doing. Play a piece but dumb it down a bit then later add more of the parts once more comfortable. I hope thats good.

Are there any exercises to increase hand span? Octaves are fine but 2 past that I just can't reach! I'm encountering it often in church hymns where I'm supposed to play F and and A. I usually just resort to playing an A octave.
hey jazerleepiano I am a 12 year old beginner that's taking private lessons I have a question I am worried I am not learning enough pieces, my teacher gives me a piece I need to learn every week is that enough or should I start learning other pieces as well? I find where I am out is with the numbers of songs I play with my band, I see I am executing more complicated pieces than I was a year ago, pretty much by ear, which is great- I am trying to get my sight reading to catch up to what I can do by ear. I've been using SRF for the past 3 weeks about 4-5 days a week, about 30-45min at Level 2, random scales and rhythms. I am trying reduce the amount of tries it takes to get through any 8 bars that they throw at me. On average, it still takes me about 3 to 5 attempts before executing perfectly without reducing the tempo. I am trying to speed up the amount of time it takes for me to see on note in front of me and make sure the 'correct' finger follows suit. Do i need to wait to be able to execute any level 2 exercise in the first try before attempting the next level? Tks.

I started learning piano by myself just 4 months ago. I find it boring to learn by the book, ive been playing songs i really like just learned how to play them and play them. I need some advices
Something that hangs me up is when the treble case is written on the bass line or vise versa. It’s like I become dyslexic. I can read the treble clef or bass clef when they are in their proper places, but turned around, I become so frustrated that I ship those pieces. Do you have any suggestions for understanding how this works to understand?
I'm curious about the depth at which you recommend analyzing pieces. I recently retired and completed 4 semesters of theory at a local university as part of getting back into music. When I started to get into more involved pieces and wanted to be able to play them better or memorize them, I tried doing Roman numeral analysis, thinking that understanding their harmonic progressions and thematic materials would help. But I found that knowing the harmonic structure of a section (relative to the tonic) didn't actually help because of the variability of how that harmony is implemented (the progression of the individual notes) and the fingering necessary to play it. As a result, my ability to play a piece - particularly from memory - seems to be more dependent on the ability to mentally or physically (looking at the keyboard) visualize what comes next . . . or simple muscle memory. What are your thoughts on the depth of analysis which is most useful?
If you want to explore music analysis in depth, consider Schenkerian analysis. It is a method of analyzing tonal music. I took a semester of it in graduate school, and it helped a lot.

I find the visual layout of the piano difficult. I can see the C scale and related chords. But the # and flat keys I can't picture. Is there a way around this?

This depends on the bars? Like if it's twinkle twinkle little star, why should you repeat it that often if you get it down after 3 times?
My question does not refer to most easy stuff but to more complex like bars 17 and 18 Revolutionary Chopin Etude. @@katttttt

I'm retired and always wanted to learn the piano. You seem like you go too fast for me. I love the idea of learning the chords but there are hundreds of them, or so it seems, and some seem difficult for finger placement.Then you have the intervals as well. Plus you have the left hand working.
