    Nice review! Something many people forget when using a syringe type filling pen like this is that the rod will displace ink as you move it back into the body of the pen. Leave it over the ink bottle while reinserting it, tighten the rear knob, then wipe the section and feed or you'll end up with an inky mess on the table. The term "bulkfiller," I believe, is a trademarked term that includes the hook latching mechanism that holds the piston head at the rear of the pen. Like "vacuumatic," however, I think it will become synonymous with other pens by other companies that make daring forays into making pens with similar filling methods.

    Thanks for the great video. I have enjoyed watching you explore these superb Chinese pens over the last year. I received the blue and clear 355 models last week but could only get the original SF nibs. I have swapped out one for a 1.5mm Jowo stub in a Ruthenium finish which works great. It writes wet and lays down a good amount of ink. I used Mont Blanc Midnight Blue which can sometimes be a fussy ink but it works great in this pen. I have found like the vac filler I need to sometimes unscrew the piston rod to get the section to fill better while writing and to get good flow.

    Your “enemy”- packing peanuts/pop corns, they say is a necessary evil (wink). Gorgeous pens all round, thanks to the excellent way that you have shown them to us. This includes explaining honestly the mistake/oversight you made, which is a great help to us viewers; thumbs up to you mate. I have a TWSBI VAC 700 R Demonstrator and the inking system of the PENBBS pens are very similar, albeit the latter having more features in its locking mechanism. Your usage of the technical term: CAVITATION to explain the difficulty in a full fill of the converter is SPOT ON, as in my job in the heavy industry; this term is frequently applied in explaining the same problem in hydraulic systems. Can’t wait for your future videos when you further explore these pens.

    Good review as usual. I got mine too, and like the size of the pen, the nib, the larger finials .. but not so much the filling system. What I'd really want is a 355-size pen with a simple (upgraded, non-sticky) piston mechanism.

    Neat! Great review - the functional details and great camera shots really feel like you’re trying out the pen yourself. Personally, I’ll pass on these two models because I like to change my inks frequently. And high volume pens aren’t a great match now that I’m retired, and just writing for pleasure. But it’s still great to see Pensbbs take one one new challenge after another. Good on them - they’re really throwing down the gauntlet. (Thank you for the demo of Bobby’s Fuliwen medium nibs - I have several 308s I’d been eyeing them for)

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  5 років тому +4

      In my humble opinion, a C/C pen is the best filling system. Simple, if converter fails, replace it. If you run out of ink, use a cartridge. .Cleaning is as easy as it gets. As an engineer, I appreciate these creative approaches to getting ink into a pen, but as a writer, the complexity outweighs the intent.

  • @DwightJurling
    @DwightJurling 5 років тому +1

    Thanks for this review. I also got ink into the threads on my 456 cap almost straight away. Fortunately, I found the finial unscrews w/o much difficulty so things cleaned up just fine. Seems a shame the 355 filling procedure is so picky. The more I think about it, however, the more I believe it's a communication problem. The pen would benefit from creative instructions.
    IMHO, the unsung feature on both the 355 and 456 is the mini ink reservoir behind the feed. Both work really well. The 456 one bigger to my eye so that's a plus for the vac model.

    • @chrisrap52

    I like everything about my Galaxy 355 - except for the fiddliness of the filling system! :) I have series of snaps and pops when trying to operate mine as that sliding cap engages at the top end. I think for the clear one, you wouldn't need those audible clues to fill it up, but I can't operate it without some trepidation in the Galaxy color. I really enjoy the smoothness of the Medium nib, love the weight shape, and balance. Hopefully, one fill will last a LONG time, but it will of course mean I don't get the experience needed to be proficient at operating the filling mechanism. so it goes, but it will likely be my only 355, unlike the multiple 308/309/323/267/456/350's I own...I've become something of a PenBBS fanatic.

    Me gusta mas el final del 355 que el del 456. Y también el hecho que el empalme NO sea metálico. Sin duda es una pluma que consideraré comprar en un futuro. Se ve solida y el mecanismo de carga de tinta es similar al del CONID, que es una pluma bastante mas costosa.
    ¿Será que ese diseño de carga de tinta que está patentado se está usando en este caso en forma legal? Interesante pluma.
    Bonita tinta. En Colombia no se consigue la Waterman, a pesar de que venden algunas de sus plumas. Bueno creo que en Colombia en total podría uno comprar unas 30 tintas, sumadas todas las marcas y colores....... Ustedes tienen acceso a cientos, sumadas marcas y colores.

      Para mí, el 456 se siente mucho mejor en la mano. El balance es perfecto para mi. El relleno de 456 vac es un diseño más simple que el relleno a granel 355. Más fácil de usar.
      El diseño de relleno a granel tiene casi 100 años, las patentes expiraron hace mucho tiempo. Conid tiene una patente sobre el diseño de bloqueo de la bomba, no el sistema de llenado.

      Hola @@chrisrap52 ¿pero no le parece a usted que ese diseño adelgazado del final del cuerpo de la pluma la hace ver muy rara? Es en realidad lo que menos me gusta de la pluma. Tampoco me llama la atención el empalme metálico, que impide su uso como eyedropper, que es algo a lo que he aprendido a dar valor, puesto que Yo escribo muchísimo en el día y esta condición de tener reserva de tinta en cantidad suficiente adquiere importancia. @@chrisrap52 Thanks Chris , yes that's what i thought but was not sure . In the conid i think its held in place with a physical latch , from the reviews i've seen that's what i think the conid construction is but i maybe wrong. Also i do wonder at the wisdom of a completely opaque barrel with a bulk filler mechanism just from a purely operational view point , however this would , i guess, be something you'd have to live with and see how practical its is . I don't want to be negative at all towards Pen BBS in any way , they are doing things no one else except conid have done to my knowledge and their pens are wonderful . It makes me have great hope for the future of fountain pens with brands like this producing pen that put some other manufacturers to shame for a faction of the cost , they make beautifully made with wonderful material fountain pens available to everyone and that, in of itself, is a wonderful thing.

      I also admire PENBBS on many levels. Not everyone wants a transparent pen. There are no instructions with the pen, so the owner must learn how to use it from other sources. That is one drawback to PENBBS. Most WIng Sungs & other pens come with an instructions sheet. As these are made by pen nerds, I guess they expect anyone who buys one would know how to use the pen.

Pull up rod to engage threads with piston, turn piston counter-clockwise to thread into piston. When fully engaged, you should be able to push piston down.
