It save time of wanting to install a kit like this. I also have one for a 400 hood and it’s missing the same bits. I plan to do a video on getting the ram air door working
A first generation Firebird with functional RAM AIR!!! That’s one amazing Pontiac. I get the feeling there’ll be an aura of more gooderness throughout the land when the mockingbird is finished.
I searched as well and even tried to find a different part number for Trans am and turned up nothing. I wish I had a real trans am to inspect to learn the difference. I figured that isn’t happening anytime soon so I modded mine. They still open with vacuum and close like the should but really is over kill. They don’t have to work I doubt you will be driving much in freezing temperatures. What I am saying is don’t stress to much if the door doesn’t block cold air quite like originally designed. I made mine look the part if you know what I mean.
Air intake kit is interesting... every car manufacturer is different for sure as is the restoration kits available...great informative content and thanks....🔧🔧👍
Great episode. You filled in a lot of blanks I had on the complete Ram Air set up. Seems like you have to spend as much time sorting out necessary parts/hardware as you do turning wrenches and doing body work. It is really coming together.
Jon I remember when I was a kid seeing ram air cars and thinking how cool they were. Well 50 plus years later, they still are. Thanks for sharing and playing cars. Have a great weekend everyone.
Cars looking great ! Not sure if you know, but the foam seals were glued to the pans. Probably not a big deal for the hood pan, but carb pan will more then likely move around so you should glue that one down.
My '69 (Real) Judge didn't have any of the ram air parts when I bought it. (Needed a lot od work) so I got most of the missing parts from ebay. It was a hunt and peck thing but I have everything on. So I can relate to your adventure! Nice job, looks great!
Block of wood and a mallet. Got it! I tried to test fit my scoop tubes and man they were tight as well. This is a great segment for someone doing a stock ram air 3. Thanks Jon.
How cool is that?!! A friend just installed an Ames complete kit on his '69 GTO factory ram air III car. His kit didn't seem to be missing any parts he needed for use or assembly. Kinda doesn't apply here though... Great Job!
wow. That was quiet the fiddle faddle but it worked and looks good. I'm with you, they should have a comprehensive kit available. She is looking great.
A couple of thoughts, if there is clearance you could use riv nuts on the upper pan instead of welding. And If anyone makes a white washable air filter you'll only need to seal it once. I have a red k and n washable filter and I have seen blue and black as well, not sure about white though.
Man it looks like you damn near scratched that cowl when trying to secure that under pan assembly. Maybe whoever should put something on that cowl to keep that from scratching that.
It did lay on the carb, plenty of space from the cowl but any prevention is a good idea. That is why I share the process so it can be duplicated or improved upon. I goal is to improve all of our game when it comes to playing cars.
Wow, Jon. That kit is hot garbage. I have installed a RAlll Firebird kit and a GTO kit and neither had those quality issues. That’s shameful. If your trans am kit is anything like the RAlll kit, you may not want to use the air filter seal. It’s a tight squeeze and can affect the way your hood shuts. Mine conforms to the hood shape and had to be pried off the hood the first time I removed it. I now put a light coat of Vaseline between the mating surfaces on top of the filter and the hood for easy removal later. You may need to gently pry around the opening where the spark arrester sits so that you can get it to snap into place.
Hi buddy. I’m doing this to my 69 TA clone also but the actuator I got (OER) are too tall and the ones that you have look slimmer. Where did you get those from
Well it’s because I cut them down and reworked the door and actuator length. I measured the space available in the hood it was about 2” the actuators are about 2 3/4” so I removed 3/4” and welded them back together. I had the same issue as you are experiencing
while testing distributor, what does it mean if the light just stays on while on the C terminal? I discovered my test light is burnt out so i was using a volt meter instead. the meter just shows steady 12v with slight variance as spinning shaft. any clue? thanks. I have also checked every component separately with ohm meter they seem to be functioning as should.
How do you have it wired up? The test light should be hooked to b terminal and c terminal. No coil or anything else besides a 12v source. The light should not be on all time if it is something isn’t right. Most likely the module. Now if the light is out and you are showing voltage on C with a volt meter that is normal. There is no ground to show a voltage drop. Lastly the ground from your battery where is it connected. Should Be on the distributor housing only.
@@VinylVillageGarage thanks, i further found the center ground wire was falling off 3 terminal plug. i also replaced module, then with cap/coil off distributor connected with three plug + battery terminal with prod from body to coil output with enough for arc allowance. then while spinning, it arcs 😄presto, i guess the loose middle ground wire or module was it. i did connect + and - where you suggested, on 3 wire plug. then test bulb from pos on battery to C terminal on module. light stayed on. anyway, Solved, thanks 👍
Thanks Jon for going the extra mile and putting together a parts list
It save time of wanting to install a kit like this. I also have one for a 400 hood and it’s missing the same bits. I plan to do a video on getting the ram air door working

Definitely going to make a gooder impression wherever it goes
Attention to detail! You're doing great work.
The details matter r
Pretty sweet kit! Of course after you sourced all the needed parts!
You got that right! Took a little time but now it’s a wow!
Damn…I was thinking the same thing…every place I called or looked said I have the correct ones…I knew I wasn’t crazy!!’ Thank you!!!
I searched as well and even tried to find a different part number for Trans am and turned up nothing. I wish I had a real trans am to inspect to learn the difference. Thanks much again Jon. You are an artist and scientist wrapped into one.
Wow, thanks!
Excellent job brother it came out beautiful. Your videos are always very well done and very informative. Thank you.
Thanks 👍 doing the best I can
Wow, a lot of figuring out going on there. Looks amazing. Thanks for sharing the parts list. Great video.👍
You bet, this is the first kit I did took a little reading pictures and trial and error.
nice bird, love those 400's, one of the best V8s GM ever made IMHO, the small block 400
Agreed! Pontiac 400 has serious potential
Air intake kit is interesting... every car manufacturer is different for sure as is the restoration kits available...great informative content and thanks....🔧🔧👍
Very true! It would be more helpful if they had pictures or directions for assembly too.
That kit looks really cool, I've never seen one before. That's going to be one awesome car.
This was the first one I messed with. It’s a cool addition for sure
Great episode. You filled in a lot of blanks I had on the complete Ram Air set up. Seems like you have to spend as much time sorting out necessary parts/hardware as you do turning wrenches and doing body work. It is really coming together.
You are right several hours behind the scenes to gather all the info and parts needed to get it done.
Great vlog John!! Keep up the fantastic work!!👍🏽
Thank you! You bet.
Jon I remember when I was a kid seeing ram air cars and thinking how cool they were. Well 50 plus years later, they still are. Thanks for sharing and playing cars. Have a great weekend everyone.
Right on, ram air cars are very cool. Pontic put they stuff on the map in my opinion
Cars looking great ! Not sure if you know, but the foam seals were glued to the pans. Probably not a big deal for the hood pan, but carb pan will more then likely move around so you should glue that one down.
I figured it was but I have never messed with them before. Thanks for the info
Very cool to see how it all goes together! Thanks for sharing!
You bet

I need most of the parts for my GTO as well I have the hood pan, and a few small parts
Block of wood and a mallet. Got it! I tried to test fit my scoop tubes and man they were tight as well. This is a great segment for someone doing a stock ram air 3. Thanks Jon.
Those tubes were the worst part.
You would think a KIT would be a COMPLETE kit. The frame on my convertible top is warped, looking forward to that video!!
I did some research and no one sold a complete kit. I have my top frame disassembled and sand blasted so will be putting it back together
How cool is that?!! A friend just installed an Ames complete kit on his '69 GTO factory ram air III car. His kit didn't seem to be missing any parts he needed for use or assembly. Kinda doesn't apply here though... Great Job!
I will keep that in mind. I hope to get to my gto and it also needs the ram air kits. I only have the hood pan the rest is missing
wow. That was quiet the fiddle faddle but it worked and looks good. I'm with you, they should have a comprehensive kit available. She is looking great.
Totally agree. This is the first ram air kit I have done. I now know what to expect.
I’ll have to see when I get back in the garage
That might be a good solution.
Quite the puzzle to do a 'gooder' job!
Took a little experimenting to figure it out. Gots no instructions or at least pictures because we don’t read directions. 🤣
Cool, I never seen one broken down and showed how it actually worked 👍👍 look into industrial generator air filters for seal kit or filter with seal.
Thanks for the tip!
Looks good!
I know it’s not seen until the hood is opened but WOW
You are so attentive to the details
The details add up to making it great
I’m sure we’re not the only ones in the world that has attempted this
Definitely not, there are several cars with this kit on them. I also have a kit for a 400 hood I almost think it will clear fine but we shall see
Its a need more hands time 🤲🤲
lol. Yup
If you go to the year one site they do have the air filter seal. It is part number mh90 that is where I got mine from.
Oh sweet, I searched several places never thought of year one. Thanks!
Now you need to install one on the other 69 TA Clone.
It’s functional ram air already
A couple of thoughts, if there is clearance you could use riv nuts on the upper pan instead of welding.
And If anyone makes a white washable air filter you'll only need to seal it once.
I have a red k and n washable filter and I have seen blue and black as well, not sure about white though.
Plenty of clearance. Rivnut would work too. I don’t know if I have seen a white filter. I was also educated that year one actually sells the seal too.

I was disappointed in quality and not being complete, this is my first kit I have purchased hopefully the next one is better.
Comparing this to a factory Camaro cowl hood is a night and day cluster.
Way different indeed
I completely know what you mean but like you I want them to function whether properly or not
If you can make them work why not.
Hi buddy. I’m doing this to my 69 TA clone also but the actuator I got (OER) are too tall and the ones that you have look slimmer. Where did you get those from

Instead of hacking up the actuators…I think I’m going to (modify) drop the floor of the pan
Let me
Know what you find
💪😎
Thanks!

And how come we never heard about having to modify these
I asked myself the same question
Same actuators…400 hood I’m sure
I have them and yes the same. The 400 hood has more room because of the hood shape.
Not sure
👍
