CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Navin (Steve Martin) loses his virginity to Patty (Catlin Adams), discovering his "special purpose" that his family always told him about.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Carl Reiner directs Steve Martin (who co-wrote the script with Carl Gottlieb) in this gag-laden comedy about an idiotic white man, raised by a poor family of black sharecroppers, who doesn't realize he's not black. Navin R. Johnson (Steve Martin) is told the horrible truth when he finds himself instinctively tapping his feet to an easy listening tune on the radio, instead of a low-down blues. His mother (Mabel King) tells him he's white and Navin takes to the road (in a World War II bomber helmet and goggles) to start a new life in St. Louis. A filling station owner, Harry Hartounian (Jackie Mason), give Navin his first break, hiring him to pump gas. One day at the station, Navin has a brainstorm, concocting an invention called "The Opti-grab," a combination handle and nose-brace for eyeglasses. But Navin runs into trouble when a crazed killer (M. Emmet Walsh) picks out his name at random from the telephone book and tries to kill him. Navin escapes to a traveling carnival, where he wrangles a job as the "guess-your-weight" man. At the carnival, he discovers his sexual nature, thanks to stunt rider and S&M enthusiast Patty Bernstein (Catlin Adams). But Navin meets the beautiful Marie (Bernadette Peters) and he quickly falls in love. In the meantime, the "Opti-grab" has taken off and soon Navin is a millionaire.

Some wonderful deadpan work by Mabel King in this scene. Seeing "The Jerk" in a double feature with "Blazing Saddles" was one of the most savvy drive-in experiences one could ever have.
Neither of those movies could be made today. Both classics.

Yolanda Anne Brown The Jerk was the only movie that had me laughing almost from start to finish. My dad threatened to not take me to anymore movies in the future I was laughing so hard and LOUD.
My Mom would always take us to the movies on the weekends. The films we saw! LOL! Mom had NO IDEA how raunchy the film would be! LOL!
The way his mom looked sideways at the dad when grandma mentioned his "special purpose". Good thing Grandma wasn't in on the joke.
My favourite line is "You mean I'm gonna stay this color?"

The line the makes me crack up every time is when Marie goes to meet him at the carnival, and he's holding just flower stems and she's says I bet they were beautiful what were they? And Steve goes a couple dozen roses. Then she says they look like daisy stems, and Steve says That guy ripped me off, he put daisy stems on my roses! I always die.

So me and my Monique love this movie...I use to say that I would'nt marry anyone unless this movie made her laugh and when i mentioned it to her, my Monique started quoting lines from it word for word. Thats when I found my special purpose and we will be getting married in May.
