Apple's USB-C Trickery: iPhone 15 Pro's Hidden Cable Controversy?

- So Apple's released a bunch of new USB-C cables. BUT here's the kicker, you're not going to get the most out of your new iPhone 15 Pro with the included cables. In fact, all the Apple USB-C cables that you can buy at the Apple store...won't help out...
If you need a cable right now, get this one (Amazon link): mreh.ca/453NqnZ

I did do the tests on the iPhone 15 Pro Max but I'm not sure about. Using the same data transfer files, the iPhone 15's Pro Max time for the 5.5 GB file was on average (3 runs) around 185 seconds and the ~1200 for the 38 GB file. I would imagine they would be same but I'll try again after my iPHone 15 Pro Max has been on for a few days (might be an indexing issue?)

That dog is so sweet. The way he just sits there patiently and looks at you so lovingly.❤
I literally came to make the exact same comment. I think I'm in love with that dog :)
Thanks for replying to me, now I get to see that sweet dog again. That is one of the sweetest little animals I’ve ever seen.
🐶
Unfortunately, I think this is pretty standard for most companies. Even when the phone supports a high transfer speed, the cables include with it are often 2.0 speeds, even if the charge speed is faster.
It’s because even with the pro phone I would say at least 50% of users have no desire to even use those high trans speeds and they’re probably just average Joe’s who charge their phone like a normal person so the box cable is gonna be just good enough for everyone, except for those people that want the high-speed and ultra fast charging. The people that want it will gladly pay for the higher end cables, and that’s how Apple makes their money and why they’re one of the wealthiest companies in the world.
@@BaxterretxaBI agree. They exploit the ignorance of the masses so that they can cut cost, while also profiting from those who want to get the more capable stuff. It's a really good strategy really.
Exactly, this practice is the industry standard.
@@mr.j5112So, Apple really did join the dark side, then.
Man these comments, did u guys ever seen any android with USB 3.0 port like Pixel or S Series come included with USB 3.0 cable?
All of them come with USB 2.0 cable because it's thinner, more flexible and only for charging
I just hope we keep this same energy for all smartphones from different companies capable of fast data transfers.
Well... if they are $1000 plus products, sure
this is an apple focused channel, you’re only gonna get it for apple
@@xpusostomos Even Samsung does it. Most charging cables are only 2.0 speeds since charging bricks don't require 3.0 speeds and it's cheaper.
@@crelliseng I've noticed that Samsung cables seem like crap... even for charging.
@@xpusostomos What’s even more egregious/interesting about Samsung is they put a usb 3.0 speed port on the usb micro s5. Then from the s6 to the s21 it went back to 2.0 speeds with their usb C port. Then with the s22 they added 5Gbps USB 3 speeds. For how much people care about specs on Samsung phones I’m surprised that managed to go under the radar for so long.
Your content is just excellent. I don’t even have any intention to buy a 15, but you’re so thorough and fun to listen to I have to watch
Most people will never use their USB-C cable to transfer data and the boxes do specify "charging" so I don't have a huge problem with it. The real blunder in my opinion is Apple not selling a USB 3.2 USB-C cable on their website, which leads less-informed customers to think they need that Thunderbolt cable when it offers no benefit at all for an iPhone 15.
but that cable supports the whole standard
Of course it is called Apple deception
BUT its more universam for moving files through their M1 macs so 2 birds one cable
Yes, if you’re getting the pro versions of the iPhones, they should have the faster cable
None of the phones android or Apple come with faster cable
@@sammyjammy6647exactly, any charging cable included is USB-2, USB-3 cables are usually shorter, a decent TB 4 cable is 25-30$ for 0.7m
The cables that came with my Google Pixel 7 Pro or Samsung Galaxy Fold 5 are USB 2.0 Data, even though they are USB-C and PD rated for at least 45w. Hardly seems like a scandal, aside from companies not labeling their USB-C cables in an obvious way to state their capabilities.
Can't wait until you find out how many USB-C cables don't support DisplayPort Video, or if they do only offer it at a lower resolution.
Hehe nah that’s not professional! 😂 but really though 😓😒 apple knows it’s wrong they know they just want you buy one lol
@@sammyjammy6647doesn’t mean Apple shouldn’t. Samsung and competitors should too if they want to get ahead of the competition
2:42 "Should Apple have provided us, with the pro versions, cables that were capable of using the hardware in that device?" Absolutely! You're paying $1000+ for a pro device, and Apple's decision to include a cable that does not supporting the full utility of the device is, IMHO, both cheep and unprofessional. Shame on Apple.
To be fair, Apple does label it a “Charge cable” everywhere, which to any “pro” user who would want USB 3 Data transfer speeds, should instantly alert them to the fact that they are not USB 3 speeds. “Pro” users who actually need USB 3 speeds would also already own USB 3 cables. So if anything, including a Charge cable in the box is fairly reasonable. I’d also wager that for people who buy the Pro models just cos it’s the best/most expensive are almost universally not going to notice or know the difference.
Loving the constant content!! Just wanted to mention something though, At the end you mentioned that the thunderbolt cables that’s “$10 more” while the price is correct.
That cable is a TB2 cable and WILL NOT work with USB-C and is an older connection standard seen on older macbooks/imacs. The high data rate cable would be a TB4 (or 3) which averages from $75-$150 depending on the length! :)
My boy out here grinding out content for us. Appreciate it man
That's actually fine with me cause I'm on the fence from switching from my S23+ lol
Would never have known if it wasn't for your video! Thank you!
Yes they should have said. They also should label their charging cords vs data transfer cords so we know not to buy the charger one if data transfer is important to us.
it literally says "charge cable" on the box. And it has been like this for YEARS now, the USB-C MacBooks also came with USB-C 2.0 cables.
@@PvtAnonymous yes but the USB 3 cable does not state that it’s really the one you need for data if you want to actually use the phone’s capabilities.
It’s the ones with a lightning bolt on them for data
Wifi 6 is double the speed of USB 3 and there are no cables so why Not just use Wifi 6? 🤷♀
@@kalijasin agree completely
They should but isn’t that standard procedure? I might be wrong but I believe that most charging cables you get for free with your product suck and won’t support higher data transfer.
yes, but to me, maybe specifically for apple, I would hope to get a bit more ---- they are seriously talk about e-waste on the event, they cancel the charging brick for iPhone ---- but if we are talking about our daily cable use, to me it is like, I need trust quality cable which can do almost everything: charging, plug into SSD, transfer files from camera, USB2 is fine for charging, but I will anyway buy and bring USB3 cable if I am travel or need to pack only one cable.
Since we already have so many cables, I would expect apple to either ship no cable with the phone, or ship an USB3 cable, that's only because they are apple and they want to reduce e-waste. They are companies want to make money and differentiate iPhone 15 and pro lines, so I kind of understand, but in another way, I am not a big fan of this movement.
There is some real cope as a consumer thinking its okay to spend over a grand on a new phone and get a last gen usb cable technology
@@shivangsaxena6943I genuinely don’t know the last time I used a cable for data transfer.
I have 1gigabit fiber with the option to upgrade to 2 gigabit fiber, I have a modern router for anything over my local network.
All of this content surrounding usb-c speeds really is to drive clicks and views from the anti-Apple crowd.
Why aren’t there better standards for USB-C?
@@chennyye28 if you need a quality cable don’t buy from Apple because they put design over durability, I think if Apple wouldn’t include their stupid cables at all that would be the best
the in depth review we all want to watch. byebye unboxT and mkbh!
I mean its labeled and sold as a CHARGE cable. Theres a huge difference and maybe apple sacrificed a little bandwidth to provide faster charging. Not many users will ever use that port to transfer data.
I believe it wasn't necessary for the cable to be included in the box as it's not the standard practice. However, it would have been a thoughtful addition. At the very least, they should offer a small grey or black cable with USB 3.0 to distinguish it from the white USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt.
Yes, the pro phones should include the „pro“ cable. Also they preach how important environment is to them and taking the steps needed to reduce the footprint of Apple products, but then they do not include the faster cable to use their new feature in their phones and make consumers buy an extra cable. So now the included cable gets stored somewhere in a drawer bcs will not be used
So thorough. Clicking all your links
Good catch
I subscribed mainly becuase of the dog. :) You're explaination was cool too.
It’s even worse than you said! You accidentally showed the older Thunderbolt cable Apple sells, which is a mere $39.00 USD. The 1m Thunderbolt 4/USB-C cable that Apple sells is *$69.00* USD. Ridiculous!!
Great video. FYI... you amazon link is not going to the Mophie cable you describe. It's just going to a Amazon page that lists a lot of cables. Thought you may be unaware. Again, great video!
Unpopular opinion but if my theory is correct then its a smart business move on their part. My theory is that the number of people who actually use the iPhone to its full potential and really need those fast data transfer rates is probably a very small amount. While it might only cost them a few cents to dollars per cable more in the overall cost it ads up if they include the higher rate cable so if they think most users won't even need it and the small few that do typically will have third party accessories anyway then they opt to save the money. But I could be wrong. just my guess.
they’re charging cables - thinner I guess so easier to handle/more compact? If you need higher speeds you’d buy a data cable (which apple doesn’t seem to sell yet)
I appreciate the swiftness
Answer- Yes :) Thanks for another great video.
I really appreciate your content. Yes, it would be nice if they included USB 3 cables, but most people are only going to use them to charge their phone, so the extra expense would be lost on the vast majority of customers. Anyone that needs high speed data transfer via wires already knows and probably owns USB 3 cables.
This may be true but if your buying the Pro Model you should get the pro cable.
As it is they already give the excuse that they do not include charge Bricks.
As Well as no Longer including Headphones.
Apple is cutting Back more and more on its end to save on cost but in turn its making E-waste by making people buy Addition cables they may not have if they need them to obtain the speeds the phone can offer.
most people don't want usb 3 cables. they are thicker, more stiff, and generally shorter than charging cables.
@@kirikotoneyes most of the people are stupid so let's give them usb 1.0 cable then
Not so much about whether it will be used by the common people but more about if you’re buying the best iPhone model in the line up, you should be expected to get the premium version of the cable. Apple just trying to get people to buy more products from them. Very sneaky.
The cable provided with the phone is marketed as a “USB-C charging cable” so I do not feel tricked by Apple about this
Idk why I’m trying to order cable with your link but it’s just taking me to Amazon without the product 😢 is it me or the link help need that cable 😂😂
I subscribed just because I like your personality and your dog ❤
I love how flexible and slim the apple cable is tho. I want something like that
Super helpful video; thanks for posting this!
But much more importantly: I'm in love with Monty! 😍
Most of all android phones also come with usb 2 cable in the box. The reason is because usb 3 cables are thicker and less flexible and most people don’t transfer files from the charge port on their phones
Missed showing Apples new USB-C Pro cable
USB-C cables cost between $5 and $45. The difference is tha data transfer rate and the best ones are very thick. I would not expect Apple to provide one of these cables because it's just supposed to be a charging cable. If you need data transfer speeds that are high, you should have to buy your own. Most people don't even do data transfer very often because verything is wireless these days.
I agree I never do data transfers
I also agree here
Damn you have the best content buddy. Love the channel 😎
Noob question from a 15 pro user:
From a longevity of battery health perspective, can I use any PD3, GaN, 30w charger as long as it is from a known brand or should I have to use Apple’s chargers only?
does it matter what port i should buy?>
REALLY good test!
Not to defend Apple, but, I'm ok with usb 2.0 cable shipping on the Pro and Max because the prices didnt get increased. This was a really good upgrade year with no price hike. If they wouldve made the the Pro start at $1099 with 128 and had a pro max with 128GB start at $1199 then that would've been deporable not to include the thunderbolt cable.
its wild. and no other phone company ships with a usb3 either. probably because most folks never plug in for data transfers and that would be a waste of material and money. it would be nice if there was an option for $10 more than the phone to get a better one when buying a new phone.
amazing video!!! you’re so talented!!
I wish you would do a review of cables offered at Amazon and Walmart as well
wow i just got the 15 pro max yesterday, does this that my phone wont fast charge? do i need usb c 3.0 to fast charge my phone? thanks for the video!
Great & interesting review. Just bought the C2C caberQU too.
Apple cut so much corners..no charger, no usb3 cable, no leather case, no earbuds 😂
Many thanks for this informative video 👍 your vide are always brilliant
Such good information! Thank you!!!
Thanks kuya kim!
Nice, informative video.
Please do one about the best cable/charger to use for battery/phone health. For me that’s the #1 thing I care about. That’s why I try to use only Apple gear or premium brands, is it worth it?
I think the point (that Apple will not overtly say) is that they include a CHARGING CABLE. If you want USB4 or Thunderbolt3/4 data transfer speeds, you must get a "Thunderbold DATA TRANSFER cable." Caveat emptor?
Yes the faster cable should be included else it is just adding more cables to more landfills. Supposedly something Apple is against. Your dog is just adorable. He seemed to be taking in every single technical detail…lol.
Arent all included cables in any phone USB 2.0? The cost would def add up if they were anything better.
The faster speed cables are great but they are really thick and stiff in my experience. I wouldn’t want to use it for charging. I just wish it was a longer braided cable that was included in the box.
awesome my friend !! thanks
This is why I hate USB-C. It's literally 30 different cables that all look IDENTICAL. usb c is such a scam. 😢😢😢😢😢😢
Hey, Thunderbolt cable that you have shown at the end is not USB-C one. Their actual USB-C Pro Cable is $69.00 USD ))
Good eye 👍🏽 It's Thunderbolt 2, so it uses the mini-Displayport plug and has a max throughput of 20 Gbps. The one you're talking about is Thunderbolt 4 using USB-C plugs with a max of 40 Gbps.
Of course! Apple should provide the USB 3 cables
Lmao thanks for the videos, just hilarious to watch while learning something new too.
I'm pretty okay with it, USB 3.1 2x2 Gen 2 or whatever it is called, as well as Thunderbolt cables, are quite a bit larger and less flexible. They use a lot more copper too. For a feature that probably 1% of iPhone users will use, I think that's a pretty solid trade off. I think the bigger problem is that Apple doesn't have anything between these charging cables and their Thunderbolt cables.
if they are labeled as a charging cable, I don’t expect fast transfer speeds
Exactly. Not sure why he’s bummed over data. It’s for power
Then you have low standards.
I'm okay with that. But they should label the cables as being USB 2.0.
I just checked, Apple does mention this on their website.
@@SanderEvers They do. It's part of the main description of the cables "It supports charging of up to 240 watts and transfers data at USB 2 rates."
Although I agree it would be *nice* if Apple included USB 3 cables, how often do you actually transfer data off of your phone via USB? I’ve had both Apple and Samsung flagships for work for the last decade and the only time I ever used USB was to root or jailbreak them. All my photos and videos are cloud synced before I even get home. The number of people that have a use case for USB3.2 is just so small, and the fraction of those that don’t already have a USB 3.2 cable must be in the hundreds lol so I really don’t think it’s *necessary*
Yes but the carbon footprint in making a usb3 and a usb2 is about the same so just to get more profit apple is doing this
thank for contribution consumer needed knowledge! 🙏🏽
I really hope you can test different usb c accessories that aren’t MFI to see how well they work. Like a backbone controller among other things.
Nice vid mate
I only use iPhone cables when doing file transfers so I would’ve preferred for them to come out with a 3.0 and not 2.0 for the pros
It actually makes a lot of sense that they would supply a USB 2.0 cable in the box. USB 3.x cables are significantly thicker and more unwieldy than 2.0 and therefore aren’t as good for travel / day to day use.
I don’t think any phone company gives you a “fast” cable in the box. If you want faster data transfers you need to purchase a usb 3 or higher cable.
Personally I think Appke should start putting USB 3.0 as I am the type of person wo likes to transfer by cable amd having the 15 plus has made it difficult because its so slow
Umm the link for the cable not working. Just heads up** oh wait I thought you giving us link to cable it self nvm good video btw
That’s actually pretty standard. Almost every company ships with a usb 2 cable and not 3 even if they support that speed
This is a great example of why I keep saying throwing USB-C on everything is a dumb idea beyond simple charging.
Having a bunch of different cables, all of which support different power levels, data speeds, protocols, etc but all LOOK exactly the same is dumb.
If you read the box it says CHARGING cable. The problem with the USB C spec is you have no idea what you are getting or what you are supposed to expect just from the cable. This isn’t for data transmission, it is for charging. The large portion of people that buy usb cables to connect to charge bricks, cars, etc don’t need data transmission
I think a good way to go is to think is if it’s not written in the description it doesn’t supports it because when you have a company that sells a usb 3.0 cable you obviously want the people to know it meanwhile if they only support 2.0 they most likely won’t tell you straight up „LOOK ITS USB 2.0“ unless they’re a scummy company who hopes stupid people will buy it because some of them say „high transfer speed, transfer files in seconds“ and then show the speed… 480mbps
What kind of stand are you using for your iPad.. I need one lol
It's industry standard to just include USB 2 cables for charging in the box, no matter what transfer speeds the phone can handle, which personally I think is fine. I do think they should label what transfer speeds the cables they sell are capable of though, since some people might be out to buy 1st party cables that are USB 3 compatible
they tell you in the product description (and I'm pretty sure it's somewhere on the box too) that these only support USB 2 data transfer speeds. This is a non-issue for people who can actually read.
Your link goes to Amazon search, not the specific mophie cable.
On the Pro version yes. They should of provided a cable that exploits the functionality of the phone. The issue with USB-C connector is the wide variety of cables. I tend to get rid of USB 2 cables to simplify things. For me giving me a USB 2 cable is junk. To give me less I would of rather they gave me a power only cable to charge on unknown usb charge outlets.
is it safe to charge my iphone 15 with a pixel usb c cable?
My only question is, should the type C to C cables be MFi certified, or was that just for the Lightning cables?
I have same question🤔
had the iphone 15 pro max for a month and never used a cable and doubt i ever will
I am a dog lover, how do you keep your so steady? Mine is like a vulcan, going all aroud 😂😜
Put a link on the cable tester, better if it sells in Canada
Off course most people use just for charge I get it,but it would be nice if the include in iPhone 14 pro and pro max.
I'm in the middle of making a similar video. There are 7 different types of USB-C PD cable standards, 4 different USB-C Data cable standards, and 4 different thunderbolt cable types. All in, there are 32 different types of USB-C cables possible on the market and the only ones with proper-ish labeling are the Thunderbolt 3/4 cables. At least you know they are thunderbolt... Even if you don't know if they are active or passive (active thunderbolt cables don't work with USB-C charging bricks).
HDMI is headed that same direction; I know some people at Best Buy who have had to explain to people trying to return their brand-new TV that the HDMI 1.4 cable was why the TV wasn't doing 4k120Hz and not a problem with the TV. Most people just want plug and play experiences and don't want to "have" to buy new cables with their new devices. But when a device uses a new standard, the cable should be replaced too. That and most companies save money by only using USB 2.0 data in the charge cable since the handshake with the charging brick doesn't require 3.0 speeds.
I think the biggest reason why they provide USB C v2 cables outside of cost is resilience, we already see Apple using braided charging cables and v2 cables are significantly more resilient to bending and twisting and general use. All those extra wires in there mean the wires are much thinner and more prone to breaking. This is the reason why Apple don't even braid their thunderbolt cables since they'll just break if you don't treat them well.
Thank you. My next question was going to be, "How about using a Thunderbolt Three cable?" You answered it. I happen to have a half-dozen Thunderbolt Three devices and a couple extra cables. Just stupid luck I guess.
Most people would only care about charge speeds, not data speeds, so why not just put in whatever keeps cost down. I do like the braided usb which at least looks premium.
When Androids provide a charging cable with their phone, do they provide USB 3, or USB 2?
I assume the main focus is charging your phone, not transferring data.
Good point!
Great video!
Man I can’t find the a black Mophie Cable for the life of me. Already ordered the white one but it’s gonna be clean all of maybe 12 hours. Probably less depending when it arrives 😂
I wish your links would go straight to the item you're presenting instead of going to a list of different cables on Amazon. It's confusing for us tech dummies to find the actual item you're showing on the video.
I think shipping a USB-2 cable in the box is fine because most people do data transfer over the internet now, and most users wont be shooting pro-res to an external drive. I think apple should offer both USB-3 cables and USB-2 cables at their store, with the USB-3 cables taking the price of the current USB-2 cables as opposed to being super expensive. The charge speed obviously isn't affected by the USB generation so I think the cable that ships in the box is mine for most people.
It’s anti-consumer. Imagine a pro user thinking they’re getting pro specs…but NOPE!
Are the apple ones different then old ones or have they just decided to advertise their existing wattage?
The thunderbolt cable you show at 2:40 is a thunderbolt 1 and 2 cable using the Mini DisplayPort connector. The cable you’re looking for is their thunderbolt 4 one. Your point is correct, your image is not.
To be fair to Apple, an enormous number of USB-C cables from all brands are USB 2.0. Part of this is because it’s cheaper. But it’s also because USB 3 and 4 cables are (basically) necessarily much fatter than USB 2 ones. Most of the people that buy iPhone 15 Pros will never plug them in to transfer files and couldn’t care less about the maximum data rate of the cable. They do care about whether it’s thin and flexible or like a piece of paracord that’s been left out in the sun. So Apple cater to their primary audience and figure anyone who needs something faster will get it themself. It’s not an indefensible decision.
Personally, I agree that it would be better to get a USB 3.2 gen 2 cable in the box, but I’m not surprised by what they’ve done.
Does USB-C 3.1 make charging any faster? Or does it only help with data? Thank you, and Monty, for all the great reviews!
Just data transfer. The pins for charging are the same either way.
Thank you@@nuvotion-live!!
To be honest, when it comes to a charging cable, I'm just looking for durability, charging speeds, and length. Even if I regularly transfer large files between my iPhone and computer (which I don't think many people are doing let's be real) I would just have a dedicated USB 3 cable ready to go SEPARATE from my daily charging cable. I can understand wanting just one cable for everything, but seeing as the Mophie cable is just $10, I don't see the upside in constantly unplugging my charger and plugging it into my computer when I need to do a file transfer. Not to mention the cable itself isn't even 2 meters which is a massive downside for a charger, limiting the range the phone can be used with as it's charging. The 19 inches I would lose can be the difference between having to use my phone on the edge of my bed to having it be positioned comfortably in front of me.
*the cable is 10 dollars more than the apple charging cable - if the cahrging cable is 30 dollars the thunderbolt is 40. No idea about the official price, just winging it, I’m not from the US. But no. USB 2 is a standard for charging cable that goes with pretty much any usb C phone because it’s a charging cable. Similarly, if you buy an external drive you will get a data cable with it, which would be much faster aka usb 3 or thunderbolt.
@@adambolom435 I'm talking about the Mophie charging cable that was recommended in the video, which comes at just $10 on Amazon currently.
@@gulber my baad. I thought you were talking about the apple thunderbolt cable.
No. Thunderbolt cables are not ideal choices as charge cables. They’re inflexible, heavy, expensive to produce and replace, and most people do not and will not benefit from their features. Give me a lightweight, flexible, durable cable with enough PD. When I need to do file transfers fast, I’ll happily supplement my own transfer equipment.
Actually I don’t have a strong feeling about it. I don’t do file transfers except over the internet, and I don’t charge except through MagSafe.
I can not find that morphine cable anywhere on Amazon even with the link.
I already have several thunderbolt 4 cables for connecting external SSDs to my Mac Studio so dont need another with the phone
I got the 15 pro. But need a USB 2 to USB C for my stereo… there shouldn’t be any issues??? Correct?
