Truth being told in my opinion if Bates would’ve stayed committed to Izzo at MSU he would’ve been a 1st rd pick. Coach Izzo would’ve stripped him of that bad shot decisions and he would’ve had to play defense in order to get on the floor at MSU. 1 more thing, Bates grew up as one of those players that was never told NO by a coach that’s why Izzo and MSU would have been perfect for him because Izzo style is team first and he gets on every player no matter status. In my opinion that’s what Bates needed more than anything is to be told NO!!💯💯💯

Emoni Bates biggest problem is that as a kid he was never actually coached, and what I mean by that is he was so good that his coaches just let him do whatever he wanted. Same thing that happen at Eastern Michigan. The issue for him when he got to Memphis was that he had to become a "system player" and has never in his life ever been asked to do that because he was always the center of attention his entire school career. Being asked to stand in the corner and wait to shoot 3's was the moon to him. Not to mention he was also pretty bad a defense.

      Thank you.
Someone that has observed and understands what has transpired.
I have a cousin who played at a very high level, and coached many elite talents in the 11-13 year old range. Had quite a few that “pay for play “ ..
A few others, high school teammates who are HS basketball coaches.
One of the last group of young players my cousin coached was one of his best, he quit! Shortly thereafter, due to players focusing solely on skills and training, and not understanding how to play the game~ how to excel in a role, play a defined role (something that’s also gone away in the NBA~ it’s simply guards, wings, Bigs~ as juxtaposed with defined responsibilities of certain positions) this is also a byproduct of working on offensive skill set only.
My ex teammates who are coaches, tell me HS coaches don’t get the respect and the players are disconnected from learning the game.
The NBA is a huge reason, young boys mimic what they see.
Watching my young son develop as a high school player, I see this constantly.
When many of these young talents get to the pay for play part of their careers , they all have plenty of offensive skill with the ball, but many find it difficult to adjust to excelling in their roles FIRST.
But this is very true, it is also why European players are excelling right now… they understand how to play team basketball, even if they aren’t the best defenders, they compete and play good team defense.
There are some teams who play team ball, the Celtics. They have American players, they are one of the line exceptions… young fans dislike their style of play. Lol. The say it’s boring.
      However, that’s how you win.
      Which is why they play.
The younger generation plays for stats, money, clout. Not for the love of the game and winning….
      Most not all.

Yes plenty of players mold their body in the NBA, like Giannis & Durant, but in this day and age I’d still like to seem physical development in prospect over 4 years.
I really wanted The Miami Heat to get hold of him. If he had went to the Heat, playing within that system and that team culture. A daily grind with emphasis on playing defense, he already has a nice shot.
If he added some weight, he could quickly see time as a 3&D guy, would probably split minutes Duncan.

He’s not bad. His game is a lot closer to Nick Young than say Kevin Durant, but thats still better than 99.9% of humans. His story is a testament to how important development and patience is at lower levels; he wouldve been drafted much higher had he played all four years of high school then played for Tom Izzo as originally planned. Having an entire AAU team built around YOU is also probably an issue, it takes away that hunger and the growth that comes with having to fight to be the top dog on your team. His jumper is pure and he has the size to grow in whichever direction he so chooses (I think he wants to become more of a point forward with the balls in his hands a lot, I think he his best served however playing as an off-ball SG who takes a ton of threes and defends on the other end a la JR Smith, Kyle Korver, and those types).

He’s either going to be the next Nick Young or MPJ. He reminds me of Bol Bol, and why he doesn’t get minutes. Both have skills, but those skills don’t translate into the flow of an offense. In Bol’s case he has above average recovery to make up for defensive mistakes, but he still gets out of position.

If there is a team that can offer stability, guidance and a roadmap to development - it’s my Cavs (maybe Spurs or Heat also). The Cavs have developed players at an incredibly level now - easy example is Isaac okoro who went from someone who would brick every three and could barely dribble to three years later is shooting over 40% from three and routinely driving the ball. It’s also a very professional, serious but yet caring environment.
He’s got a true, true second chance with the Cavs. Up to him to develop. It’d be great if in three years he can put in a strong 15 mins a night off the bench and solidify himself as a serious, professional role player

Of course he can, he's just a baby. If I were him I'd start with conditioning by hitting the iron pile, running hills, sprints, core exercises . He's tall but doesn't look strong or athletic. Even though the NBA has changed, you still got to be strong especially at his height
A couple of years getting into shape and staying in shape, watching film to find his shots and learning the team defensive schemes👍

Been saying it for a while: a lot of this young generation can flat out SCORE, but can't play pro basketball. They don't know how to move without the ball cuz they never had to do it throughout high school and AAU. They don't know how to read defenses, don't understand pace, spacing, angles, don't know how to pass etc. There's more to basketball than just 1v1 skills.

Glory to God in the Highest. Emoni Bates need to be honest with himself in reference to his weaknesses. Do a self examination, practice with professionals who encourage but hold you responsible for on and off court activities. Except honest criticism. Makeup your mind to allow your actions to express, that I want to be the best. Be accountable, surrounding yourself with people that epitomize the charteristics of who you want to be and comit yourself. Don't talk about it, be about it! The Cavs were the only ones willing to take a chance on him, and they are taking the right route by developing him.
