I played maia1 a few times long ago and beat her but then maybe a couple months ago tried again and was absolutely destroyed. She’s not 1100 anymore but like 1600, definitely harder than before. I think it’s like in The Terminator where the machines got way smarter, way more quickly than their creators thought. 😱

just a little UA-cam tip if, I may, Coach. If you put the timestamps in the description (even if you bury it in the last line), not only it is clickable in the description, but UA-cam is going to use them in the playhead indicator as little "segments" or chapters, very useful for viewers. See for example: ua-cam.com/video/Q9CpUGtbWHU/v-deo.html
I hope this is useful, again thank you for your lessons!

I think maybe one thing to keep in mind is the lichess ratings are higher relative to say USCF ratings, which may account for some of the not-so-good play you saw here. So Lichess 1500 may be more like USCF 1200. My experience with Maia has been pretty good, but with all engines approximating a playing strength there often seems to be a moment where the algorithm decides, hmmm, I need to do something bad now.

Coach, in game one after the rook battery is set and the black pawn attacks the bishop, I see 1Bxg6 BPxB, 2RxP NxR, 3QxP+ K-f8, 4RxN R-e7, 5Q-f6+ will checkmate. Therefore 1Bxg6 RPxB, where 2R-h8+ gets white nothing. That black knight anchored by the queen holds it.
Oops. 5Q-f6+ looses, as the black king runs down the rabbit hole of e1.
After your 1Rxh7 black needed the inbetween move PxB. This (1----NxR) is another application of Smirnov's rule, To take is a mistake, i.e., don't make automatic retakes.

Great lesson, great recap of the openings we learned so far. I've been studying your opening lessons every day for more than a week now, so this lesson is a welcome change.
I especially liked the Maia games, every step explained. The Blitz games were still a bit hard to follow, but I'll revisit them once I've worked through all the lessons up to this one.
I've played Maia1 before and won. I haven't tried Maia5 yet. I'm getting stronger every day so maybe now is the time to challenge her. I can't make heads or tails of these Lichess ratings.

We will talk about it more in detail, but for now, try to get used to coming up with candidate moves when you feel you got to a critical position. You might still feel it is not easy to tell when you are in a critical position, but as you develop your intuition, it will simply become easier 👍

43:33 The only thing I hate about chess since I started playing is that stupid stalemate rule. It makes no sense. If the enemy king has no option other than moving to a square which is attacked, then we should be declared winner. It is the only thing that is unfair in the game. I wish they changed that rule.

Hello Robert, very good video, I really like it! At minute 36:54 at the 23rd move you could move a way stronger move than f5. Its Qh5 attacking the bishop attacking the pawn, he can't protect the bishop with any piece (for example Kg7 fxg5 loses the bishop) so he has to go back. At this moment you can take on g5 maybe with the Queen. It seems like you could have won a very important pawn. Thank you!

The bot not resigning is because it copies human behaviour and because of the clock, the chance of stalemate and hubris many opponents don't resign until the very, very end, see your last opponent. I often don't like it but they like wasting (my) time.
I think the difference between this bot and another bot is that Maia blunders like humans, probably with the same statistics while SF doesn't really blunder or does it? But what do I know? I like the idea of a more human robot though.

I'm not too sure that Rxh7 was working in game 1. cxd, the rook and the queen are being attacked. If Qxd then Nxh7 and if Rh8+ Kg7, Qxd, the rook is still under attack from blacks rook on e8. I didn't look too deep, but we're down a bishop and a rook and I don't see an immediate follow up.

    • @NMRobertRamirez
      @NMRobertRamirez  3 роки тому +1

You are absolutely correct! I only did it to show you guys how this kind of attack could be effective on inexperienced players. Even if our sacrifices are not sound, they will not know how to defend and find the right move. However, as you move up the ladder, this will not be the case any more and you will need a different approach like I did vs Maia9. We need to adjust, but initially, it is a good idea to get comfortable with attacking our opponent's king. Hope this makes sense 👍

Hello! We all have been there. The simplest way to improve it is to train tactics. Start with mate in 1, then in 2 and so on. You can also do exercises like the one I mentioned in lesson # 66 when reviewing games (2 by 2, 3 by 3, etc) 👍

I have played several games as black against Maia5 and what I like is the openings and responses seem more textbook than bots and computer normally does. If I blunder I lose and if I follow your openings and concentrate on not making silly mistakes I can win. I have just played a Pirc defence against a classical style opening from white and won. I think this is really good practice at my lowish/middling level. I will try to post the PGN but I doubt it will work!

Good question, Tarek! In that case, we would be in big trouble. My rook sacrifice was a mistake. I just wanted you to see how it could be difficult for many players to defend such attacks. They will not work against stronger players, but until you get to that point, you should try to get experience with such aggressive ideas.

I had a problem with my FIDE account when I left Cuba and have not played a FIDE rated tournament in many years, but my USCF should be around my online rating. I am working on officially moving to the USA federation and planning to start playing tournaments again. Mainly to work on my FIDE rating instead of USCF. Let's see 🙌

@@Speedster___ uff really far. The thing with titles like IM and GM is that besides the rating, they require you to complete norms and it could be challenging if you do not play lots of tournaments. When I start working on it, I want to just set my mind to playing lots of tournaments. Otherwise, it is not as easy. When I got to the US, I would play 2 or 3 tournaments a year, but I need to do more than that for sure and of course train seriously.

Maia does NOT play like a human. The lowest rated bot knows way too much opening theory, even against rare openings. I have never played a human at her supposed level play so much good theory against the Dutch or the Alekhine. Also, she plays endgames way too well. The middle game is fairly human-like, though.

I downloaded "gametop grand chess master 3", and the "easy adult" level, I think, Is the spirit of Bobby Fischer. I want to see anybody beat it, (easy adult level), three times in a row. I only lost one game to a old version of only 3 levels (at its highest level), and felt like Boris Spassky in 1971.
