    In the military, we didnt know much about head injuries but the uptick in IED blast injuries kicked off huge studies in TBIs (Traumatic Brain Injury) and as a medic, we started MACE testing (Military Acute Concussion Evaluation). Maybe spotters need to grab a mace card and ask the questions or some modified version of it.

    My wife and I are huge Bowman fans, so disappointed for him, and hoping that he recovers quickly. Big props for speaking up and saying that he wasn’t ok. Changing the culture takes these types of moments where people speak up and say there’s something wrong and do not put their long term health in jeopardy by continuing to compete with a brain injury.

    I’ve had my share of concussions, and a way I know is I cannot do math. I can repeat muscle memory and past knowledge, but not new. Maybe ask the driver: “We’re on lap 65 of 75, how many laps are left in this stage?” If they can’t answer, get ‘em out of the car. Concussions mess with your thinking process.

    • @Maverick33
      @Maverick33 2 роки тому

      Only one issue with the question about the stage thing. It's the spotters who usually keep lap count. Most drivers are so focused on driving, they block everything else out. Speaking from experience by driving a go kart. As a driver, you just get tunnel visioned on driving and block everything else out. Especially lap count. That's why crew chiefs and spotters take on the strategy calculations

    • @RyTrapp0
      @RyTrapp0 2 роки тому

      That's honestly not a bad idea. I mean, after enough of a wreck for the spotter to be concerned about a potential discussion, well the driver is gonna be knocked out of their tunnel vision. Getting the 'right answer' isn't the point of this sort of question anyway, it's more about hearing how they respond. With as much as a driver & spotter communicate, a spotter is probably going to have about as much an understanding of their driver's speech & mannerisms as anyone, especially for a super basic question like that. Honestly, I wouldn't even factor in whether the answer was right or wrong, the question is just setting the table so to speak for what should be a pretty predictable response. If they sound 'off' or whatever, then, well...

    Biggest story of the whole episode is the last comment by Mr. Kraft. Looking at it from the aspect of how it affects one person or the whole field of racers. Concussions are individual based and doesn't affect anybody but themselves medically speaking. The whole field has a steering rack. We just had a rash of tire issues that caused some major problems and upsets in the playoff chase. I would imagine that a steering issue can only be as bad

    • @ScottXC91

      I think that's exactly what happened. I was watching an episode of NASCAR America Motormouths with Nate Ryan, Kyle Petty, and Dale Jarrett and they were talking about whether the Roval would produce steering issues. Considering the test at the Roval last year was the first place the steering issues appeared. Kyle Petty said "Absolutely. After the steering issues we saw at Bristol, the issues at the Roval test last year, and I even heard that a driver had steering issues at Talladega..." and everyone just kind of looked at him but didn't say anything.
      Sounds like all the insiders know but it hasn't made its way out to the standard media so everyone his keeping it hush-hush. But that doesn't necessarily mean it was the car's fault. Spire Motorsports in tiny. I don't know if you've watched any of the Race for the Championship show. But the first episode covered Corey and Spire, and there's points where Corey is in the shop pouring his own seat insert, and he's the only soul working on the car. He's literally in tears at one point because it's just him and his crew chief in the shop wrenching on the car. They're a small team with limited people and resources. There's no guarantee someone didn't make a mistake.

    So I’ve raced at Dega and Daytona both. I will say they are the easiest as far as gforces go because your banked so far it’s not lateral like Charlotte is a bit** when it comes to lateral gforces. But what people don’t consider is the mental strain of cruising 192-195mph. The amount of heat in the car sealed up. The first Time I raced with the right side window sealed up it was huge change just the lack of air flow.obviously every generation of car changes how it drives. Before splitters we would have uncommanded lane changes the car would just jump a lane. Usually it was from air getting under the car. Especially at Daytona coming off of 4. Most rookies would slap the wall. Because the car would ice skate off of 4 into the dog leg. Skating at 195mph is a terrible feeling. Mentally they are the most challenging when drafting.

    We need accelerometers in the drivers earpieces or at least besides their heads built in to their helmets to automatically trigger after crossing a certain threshold and mandate they get sent to the care center if that threshold is broken, whether they can drive back to the garage or not. Indycar and F1 have this technology in place and for good reason. This is how to improve on our concussion protocol.

    Engineering degree here...The magnitude of G forces and the time frame over which they are imposed on the brain is the issue. For instance, higher G forces are more tolerable if they are imposed gradually as opposed to instantaneously. The stiffer the car, the higher the G force and the faster it is imposed. There needs to be more research regarding the threshold of unfavorable outcomes on the brain. All the human data is crash-based and, to a large degree, subjective. We just do not subject humans to this kind of testing because of the nature of the injuries. The military as done a lot of this work in conjunction with ejection seat design, and there is a lot of animal testing. Problem is, determining if a rat has a concussion is very hard to do - they have a very limited vocabulary. Additionally, CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy - the cumulative damage from multiple hits) is a relatively new field of concern. We are finding that the brain is more susceptible to injury than was previously thought and that repeated hits are very cumulative.
    The car was designed based on computer modeling. I do not know what G forces were used in the model, but any model needs field-truthing and that is what is currently happening in the races today. To a certain extent, the drivers are test-subjects.
    Someone point out where I am mistaken or have made improper inferences.

I heard his radio transmission about his hard hit , He also said he couldn't drive the rest of the day . My question is : who could hear him ? If Nascar officials heard , shouldn't they have taken him to be evaluated instead of finishing the race ? I know it's not the spotters responsibility , but other people had to have heard him say that and taken him seriously. Just wondering. Get well Alex 💜

      Exactly. Racing is a way of life for them. It inevitably becomes part of who they are. Speaking from experience here. When you're forced to quit doing something you love, it takes a HUGE mental and emotional toll on you. You feel like you've lost a piece of yourself. You feel like you lost your identity. Like you're just lost and really don't know who you are anymore and don't know what to do. That can lead to depression, self doubt, low self esteem, etc. However, when you're allowed back, you just feel this euphoria and just so happy you re-found yourself basically

    Well they keep making the cars more durable so they can crash and keep going. That seems like a pretty bad idea. It just makes people less afraid to crash and they get braver. All the downforce just helps them maintain higher corner speeds so they can wreck harder plus puts more load on the tires so they can blow out and cause more wrecks. Two things NASCAR seems to want to avoid is good racing and safety. It’s all about entertainment. Just bunch ‘‘em up and hold the throttle to the floor all day long.

  • @RodneyAEvans
    @RodneyAEvans 2 роки тому

    Maybe they should try some tires that are more narrow which would slow the cars down some (maybe not at dega but everywhere else) and make handling and driver control more important. This might make for better racing, safer for the drivers, and you wouldn't need a maximum HP engine if you can't use the extra HP. Driver safety and on the track action would increase which increases the amount of viewers and fans @ the tracks.
    However... I fear that ///Nascar wants their cars to be overly impressive on the track with high speeds over the concerns for safety and the limits of the human body to sustain in a crash.

    It's pretty obvious that the new car is SO stiff, nothing gives and no crush zones to absorb the impact. The only thing that gives and absorbs the impact is the driver. This car needs a redesign ASAP before we lose another driver. NASCAR is taking a huge risk continuing with this car with no redesign. They already have two playoff drivers sitting on the sidelines with concussions because of the design of this car. I'm sure if they would let the teams make modifications they would have already fixed the problem.

    Nascar can see the data from impacts. That data needs to be LIVE. That data should be available to view Immediately, Nascar needs to set a minimum Impact number that requires the driver to pull off and instantly go for baseline testing, regardless of current symptoms. I don't think every driver would like this rule, but if a wreck meets minimum Impact criteria, they should be forced to baseline. If they can't return to the track in time for the end of the race, they should by default give that driver his finishing position at the time of the wreck. If that driver does have time to return, they should be able to return in the same position as the wreck, even if 50 laps have passed.
    Nascar has a major fucking problem on their hands. Everyone involved with the construction of ANYTHING knows, engineering is NOT the end all, be all, because of data. Nascar needs to get off their data and engineering horse and start making adjustments according to real-life feedback.

    This is just me being an idiot and I know NOTHING of course, I'm a tax accountant ffs. But it appears to me that the car doesn't crumple a lot on rear impacts as they used to do.
