Salubong doesn't actually mean "welcome" It means "meeting". So pasalubong is when you given whqn you meet with relatives on occasions or when you meet them when you come back from a vacation. For birthdays, we give thanks for the additional year and consider it as a blessing and as a way of sharing the blessing, we give out parties if we can afford it.

Seems to be a two sided sword. While it is nice to bring back souvenirs for everyone you know, surviving on such marginal incomes, and finally having the opportunity to go somewhere, only to spend a large chunck of your limited cash buying gifts for everyone means you have to either have a shorter travel time, or downgrade your vacation. When the majority of the population live in abject poverty I would think they would have better things to spend their money on. Perhaps rice? Or, instead of buying keychains for everybody, how about a kilo or two of rice? That would actually benefit your friends/family. Send them a text with a nice picture of your vacation. That is free. And, personally, would mean more than a package of sugar treats.
But I think most of the Western countries have a mindset of improving their lives more so than many of the more tropical countries. We had to try and gather enough resources to keep us alive through Winter, where the tropical countries just had to go out and find another coconut. That would produce two vastly different strategies for how they live. We get 1 chance a year to grow food. They have 365 chances. Neither is better, just different. The Southern hemisphere, with mild Winters (summer) and warm Summers (winter) creates yet another type of societal norms.

I was stationed in Guam, and the Chamorro culture is very similar to the Philippines. They throw a fiesta for anything and everything.... Birthdays, weddings, Christenings, and every other special event you can think of. I loved it there!

Pasalubong is one of the Filipino traits but depends on you either you hate it or love it. But one thing for sure this is part of a develop cultures of getting closer to your family and love ones. It is all depend on you if you will do it or not there is no fall out of relationships if you dont do it. As Christians culture of sharing one's blessings to other even in the simplest way.

The candies were "smartees". Used to get them at Halloween. Similar to Sweet tarts! Mark from D.C.

Western culture in Europe also states that you have to pay on your birthday. Maybe its just a US thingy.

Naive it may seem, but foreigners should also know that Filipinos are also capable of cynicism through these two expressions among others. UserFriendly, Uber friendly person to those they intend to take advantage to, and "naalala lang pag may kailangan (remembered only in times of want/need". Easy for pinoys to be treated as doormats, even by relatives. So there is a negative implication for the pinoy kindness trait.

I expect to be called a cheap Charlie when I'm over there, but I'll correct them - "Cheap Charlie, the Free" (from wage slavery).

    Smartie

Those were called SMARTIES. They are still around. I see them in like a variety pack bag of Halloween candy. Not on a store shelf year-round like when we were kids. That area has been taken over by that nasty caffeine syrup they call energy drinks.

If foreigners are involved, "Pasalubong" is a one way street for sure. In 18 years, I have only met one local who is generous.

I think the one candy is a chick-o-stick. Yes, I remember stressing out on the last day of vacation running around trying to fulfill the list for everyone, happy pasalubong.

yes, that's very similar to one of them, and the other one I found out I was thinking of was Smarties. Thanks for sharing! I remember chick-o-stick now too.

If you think pasalubong is an act of generosity why did you call it "weird" in one of your previous videos? What's so weird for being generous?

@@WatchCaliforniaExpat In this video you mentioned that pasalubong is a way for Filipinos to show they care. In the other video you said pasalubong is one of the 9 weird things about the Filipino culture. Let's not have selective memory here.

@@J-Tyson558in the last video I clarified what I meant by the word weird and said it's not so much weird but different part of culture. Let's also not take things out of context here
