- An alternate version of Octopus's Garden.
In 1969, ITV produced a television special titled 'With A Little Help From My Friends' as a tribute to George Martin and his profound impact on the music industry. Notably, Ringo Starr took part in the special and consented to lip-sync a performance of 'Octopus's Garden.' In adherence to the guidelines set forth by the Musicians' Union, a re-recording was undertaken to create the illusion that Starr was singing live. For this purpose, new instrumental tracks were recorded by accomplished session musicians while retaining the original vocal track.
I wondered for decades how this made-for-TV sounded, and finally here I am hearing it.
If only some footage of the show still exist…
The musicality of Ringo's fills together with George's licks is outstanding. Just listen to the last few seconds.
But it's not George playing. It doesn't even sound like him.
There wasn't a ban on lip-syncing - but there was a Musician's Union directive that the performance had to be original to the TV show. This was to ensure that session musicians had an opportunity to receive a performance payment for their work. It's the same reason that artists lip-syncing on Top of the Pops were supposed to either play live or lip sync to a re-recorded version of the track. In reality, they often sang over a remixed version instead... This is a really interesting one, where session musicians have recreated a recording (a bit like the Top of the Pops records of the 1970s - but that's another rabbit hole).
Thanks for the additional info! I'll update the description
That guitar playing, I never really noticed all the bits, exceptional work!
Octopus's Garden is actually a brilliant song. It gets some credit, but because it sounds so infantile, it doesn't get as much as it might.
It’s considered by a lot of people to be one of the Beatles worst songs but it’s my favorite
It's a lovely song that you can sing with your kids.
@@User_32 I dont understand anyone who things this song is bad or the worst. Its simple, its innocent, but the message ist wonderful, the images it paints are nice, the melody ist also cool. Even the first line alone is great. Better than Silver Hammer and Rocky Racoon for sure.
People who think it's a joke or "infantile" don't understand the Beatles, really. They think rock/pop music has to be serious and tough, which it absolutely doesn't have to be.
The kind of people who don't also get the genius of Sparks or They Might Be Giants, because they're allergic to humorous lyrics
From a musical standpoint, it's brilliant.
You are possibly one of the coolest people ever
Thank you for all the great stuff, it's fab, it's gear, etc, etc. ✌😎✌😎
One of my favourite songs from The Beatles. It is great!!!
It's only this year (and month) when i knew this nicely amazing song by Ringo. Goddie😇 bless you for post it.
Sounds fantastic!
THANK YOU!!!!!
I found this on Kazaa or Napster AGES ago and I’ve never been able to find it since. I had no idea that the instrumentalists weren’t The Beatles, which makes sense why I’ve never found this using “Beatles” in the search terms. I’ve always loved this version as it is charmingly barebones. What a great find.
You made my year.
Wow, I never heard this one..
Thanks! 🙏🏽
Thank you for this
Nice, and it’s like a jingle in a TV ad
I love ringo! ❤️
Just amazing 😁
I just noticed...that's Ringo's drum stem, too.
Ain't no session musician gonna replace that shit. And I imagine the session musicians needed to play along to some sort of reference track, & I suppose the drum stem is the best thing for that (bar the guitar intro & outro).
Plus, those "bubbly" vocals in the bridge are just the best.
That bubbly sound is one of them (or Mal?) blowing into a straw in a glass of milk from the EMI/Abbey Rd canteen.
@@johnhoward9210it's ringo. There's photos of him in the studio. I think Linda took them.
✌️we ❤️ ringo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!✌️
Session musicians did good work on the guitar and piano parts. Rerecorded with them 12/8/69 in 10 takes, the vocals and solo harmonies (and also drums too?) were played back for sessions musicans so play
bullsheet!!
Studio session people. Ringo’s vocals. So saying John Paul or George anything on this, reread it.
Ringo super star
George's guitar is so underappreciated here
❤
Isso é raro Alexandra . Sou muito fã deles e da carreira solo. E sou músico. Boa tarde.
Que traga mais novidades.
That sounded very close to the original
miss the back up vocals
is there footage of the special available online?
Not that I know of. I think only the audio survives.
Ringo !!?
Yes, him himself. Took time off from Thomas and Friends.
