Really appreciate this take. I have always had a hard time with the PoE community because it feels like everyone is focused on the destination and not the journey. This is a good example of why Mathil is basically the only PoE streamer I watch. His approach to the game and games in general is standout in the community and it represents mine the best. This is a time where hype is big and a lot of new eyes are on the franchise, a time where making videos would be most profitable and you'd want to drum up attention to boost your stream. As organic PoE 1 player, that didn't use PoB all those years, I can tell that mathil is 100% right. Pls please learn the game base on the campaign and not from yt. For years nobody has discovered the tags-system and and the PoE 1 archetypes blueprint because they where focused on outside sources to learn the game. Playing PoE organically was the best gamming experience that I ever had and I hope PoE2 can replicate that experience for me again.
Picking my starting class purely based on the vibes and class fantasy as presented by the artwork. Based gaming take Mathil. Also the first time my mom and brother will be playing Poe so very excited to bumble about with them.
I'll 100% follow in your footsteps. This is such a great game to try and optimize the fun out of it even before it releases. The best part about PoE (1) was slowly learning and becoming a true godslayer. I definitely want to have my share of exploration, fail and discovery in PoE 2, because it looks like such a passion project!
Well said. I couldn't agree more. I am so excited to discover new things and I am staying away from Reddit and other like-forums to hopefully fully immerse myself and try things out on my own. Loving the nearly clean slate we get in a game that will already feel very familiar for the most of us.
Back in my day, you could call a tips & tricks hotline... seriously. This is why people people suck in games now, they want everything spoon fed to them before the game is even out! Once upon a time, you used to actually "play" the game to learn and understand it.
im with ya! Looking forward to enjoying the magical unknown exploration period. I've already ignored a handful of videos from those trying to deep dive it pre release.
No offense Mathil, but I think this is a bad take, or atleast a bad way to present it. Your presentation here boils down to "if you don't enjoy the game like I do it's bad". I get that what you're trying to say is that you recommend that people play the game blind, but in the way you're wording it you're coming off as judgy and like any other way to have fun is wrong, which is straight up not true. For a lot of us the hype of finding out everything before hand is just as much fun, if not more than it is discovering while playing. Some people's fun is build and theory crafting, that's what they come to the game for. Personally I'm too stupid to make builds, atleast in poe1. I'll definitely try in poe2 though. But I get to do that in whatever way *I* find fun, and the way you're wording your video sounds an awful lot like you think my fun is wrong, or other people's fun is wrong. I know that's not the intent here, but that's what it comes off as. I do appreciate the intent and that you're looking out for people and trying to let them know that there's other ways of exploring the new content and that those versions are also fun, that's entirely valid, but so is them going "nah, I want all the info". Not trying to flame, just want to let you know that your wording on this video could've used some work before uploading.
There are so many creators right now trying to profit from the hype lol. Looking forward to your trusty builds to just have fun after a few weeks. But the first two months will be just me trying stuff out.
I’ve just got to say, your hair looks great in this video. Also, you are so right. I don’t plan on watching any guides for my first character for that reason.
True and real. I want fun out of this game, a little adventure and a chance to explore, discover and learn things from the bottom up. Min-maxing will come in due time, I just wanna experience this game man.
I'm toying with the idea of steering clear of Reddit, Twitch, and UA-cam until December is over. I remember playing in PoE's closed beta where nobody knew shit and you'd just log in and play. We have the next decade to metagame PoE2 with guides and walkthroughs, but the first unadulterated playthrough is an opportunity for something magical that's hard to come by these days.
100% agree with this video. Everyone nowadays just wants to ruin their own experience by not even using their fucking brain. They wan't some rando streamers to tell them what to do. These kids don't know what the fuck real fun is: it's exploration, discovery, perseverance, learning, and succeeding because you used your brain.
i already have 2 build ideas lined up from the bits and pieces we have gotten. both of them are highly experimental and have a high chance of being absolutely terrible but im going in!
Agreed. I will take my time. Explore. Enjoy what the game has to offer. I will avoid "BIG NEW BEST BUILD EVER, 200 GCP/H" garbage right from the start. I want to figure the game out myself. The most fun I ever had in PoE 1 was figuring out builds myself. I already tried to avoid campaign spoilers as much as possible. If Act 1-3 takes me 30+h to finish, so be it. You can only do something for the first time -once.
Definitely the first rule is to have fun. I also think that the game will have lots of broken stuff in it, and that the standards of a good build are gonna be much lower than what they are in 2024's PoE 1. Experimentation is encouraged, and even if you first build sucks, there's gonna be 11 other classes to test out.
Lovely vision/reminder, thanks. My rephrasing take: play PoB2 when it'll come out if you want but, in the meantime, do try to enjoy what PoE2 offers for what IT is :)
Yes that's my plan going blind and try some themed build that will probably suck! My ideas so far: D&D party minions - Warrior, Mage, Cleric skeletons Helldivers mercenary - just shoot things with gun and artillery Tracer - Chronomancer with crossbow to simulate a gun maybe?
I like your take, I think people still gonna play poe1 league before poe2 is fully released. While poe2 EA is gonna be huge, there won't be leagues, it's just huge standard league thats gonna take forever before full release. Everyone will run fully equipped chars and trying different builds but theres no need to minmax everything in EA. In the end, meta will shakeup a LOT more than POE1's since it's EA, especially that on the full release we get second half of acts and classes. Take it easy folks, relax, take your time to learn the game and wait for the first league to feel the actual league start hype in the new env! Hopefully it's gonna be blight league
I am very much looking forward to the sequel. It was really tough trying to get into POE later in the games life without having to do a lot of research. Coming into the newer game on the ground floor will be great.
I've watched whatever GGG have revealed in the stream multiple times over, not so much out of wanting to analyse it, but just being hyped as hell. I do see people posting spoilers already about things that weren't shown by GGG to the public, which is disappointing, and surely will try my best to avoid them. Can't wait to bite into a fresh experience that has a very good chance of being very memorable.
I mostly agree but I think some knowledge is recommended. Like having zero idea what the ascendancies are would cause people to feel like they made the wrong decision if they got past their first trial and neither ascendancy sounded like fun to them. There is more build defining stuff here like ascendancies than we had when POE first launched and that should be considered.
YES!! Yes this! Why are people rushing to have everything solved when the game is firstly in EA and secondly ruins the joy of exploring something for the first time and then finding a way to beat it? ... there ll be more than enough time to "race"... Besides the official announcement, without going into all the details, I've been keeping away from spoilers - just want to have fun.
I enjoy seeing unique items teasers and little things like that, but I cannot get behind the people doing detailed "theorycrafting" and whatnot for "builds" in a game that isn't even out yet. I just want to play the game and enjoy the discovery man. To each their own, but I don't know why people want to ruin as much of the discovery process as possible for themselves.
I think its absolutely pathetic how some people are seeking validation from being a little more efficient or faster at a video game thats not even PVP. Some folks are brain damaged from elitist mentality
Good take. I already have one friend what is just spamming my discord full of videos and screenshots on poe2 and is really eager to go blast it through. I just watched the trailers and teasers. Currently i'm just like you man, asking why rush it and trying to solve it already, as it will ruin the first time fun... It's getting exhausting and I'm not in a rush, when there are also other games to play through right now (like Stalker 2).
its weird to me how common the sentiment of "build guides suck we just wanna make our own builds and have fun" and simultaneously ubiquitous build guide use is. I'm sure to some extent its two separate camps of players, but it feels like the second build guides exist lots of players assume they HAVE to use them. no one is putting a gun upto your head and forcing you to follow a guide. I have nearly 2000 hours in poe 1, i have played almost exclusively ssf that entire time, and i have never once started a build by going "welp, time to open up a guide and do everything they say to do"
I haven't engaged with anything poe2 related. Didn't even watch the big announcement stream. Can't wait to get my access key and go in as blind as I can :)
Based take. PoE2 will be the first time (over 2.5k-ish hours in PoE1, playing on/off since beta) where I will start with my own build. Compared to normal leaguestart, "getting as far as I can" is a solid goal for me instead of the usual "kill ubers". From the previews, I have a some ideas where to go. After all, without life on the tree it should be easier at least to survive, so that only leaves damage to be solved. Right? Right....?
I've been taking this approach to it so far, I know almost nothing about the game at all, I didn't even watch the reveal because I want to go into the EA release almost completely blind. The only information I''ve seen at all is the ascendancy classes, and only because there are a lot of them, they are pretty important, and you dont get to see them in-game until you've already committed to a character. Even then I've been avoiding the videos of people breaking down what they think is going to be good, and have just decided I want to play the gemling themed Merc class bc it looks really cool flavor-wise
Totally agree. The only thing i watch is generally the livestream but ive watched it about 8 times now with different streamers n reactions. Other than that i dont really plan on finding other information. The livestream was more than enough for me and now, like everyone else, wish today was 6th december.
Very much agree with this take. Personally I am thinking about not following guides anymore and just do my own stuff. Tried doing more of that and it has made gaming so much more fun. When i hit a brick wall I will look up possible solutions for it but I just wanna make some of my own fantasy builds
Not people already making build guides... :-() I think GGG really wants us to enjoy learning about all the new mechanics and options. We don't even know what half the ascendancy nodes do, and we have almost no clue what is on the passive tree.
Can't wait for the fresh mystery of wonder that will be poe2. Don't need any zoomer minmax hyper strat. Just gonna play and blast balls with the boys. Can't wait!
biggest take away here is that you only ever get to go in blind ONCE. EVER. so try and enjoy it because you'll never get that 'first playthrough' again. (god i wish i could play Inscryption for the first time again)
My plan is to see how long I can avoid watching guides and builds, or infodumps about what's good and what's trash. I'll just play what looks fun and make it as good as it can be.

That tricera guy
Yeah I've seen creators who havnt made any content on poe in general making videos on it like they know anything about poe
I’ve just got to say, your hair looks great in this video. Also, you are so right. I don’t plan on watching any guides for my first character for that reason.
Quin deep diving every pixel...
Agreed. Only thing I want more of is the rest of the ascendancy nodes to figure out what I want to play.
Oldge take
Already theorycrafted and minmaxxed every detail
The grinding never stops. The baiting stays strong
i already have 2 build ideas lined up from the bits and pieces we have gotten. both of them are highly experimental and have a high chance of being absolutely terrible but im going in!
Based Mathil as usual, going in blind is the only way imo
This is why we watch you man. Good takes!
It's absolutely the best way to play games!
Planning on going in with 3 friends and cooping the campaign. Mage, tank, ranger, probably a necromancer. Gonna be having a blast.
Yes that's my plan going blind and try some themed build that will probably suck!
My ideas so far:
D&D party minions - Warrior, Mage, Cleric skeletons
Helldivers mercenary - just shoot things with gun and artillery
Tracer - Chronomancer with crossbow to simulate a gun maybe?
I will love playing the first league/leagues. Just playing whatever the hell seems fun, before everything figure out what is best and meta.
Love the message, more people gotta take the idea on to not spoil themselves.
Can’t wait for the content from people. World first hur hurr special Olympics
Probably will start SSF for the first time. I realized meticulously following a guide was taking most of the game out of the game.
The only thing Id like to have is a passive tree planner, everything else Im gonna go in blind
I am very much looking forward to the sequel. It was really tough trying to get into POE later in the games life without having to do a lot of research. Coming into the newer game on the ground floor will be great.
I agree, playing a pre-solved game is always less fun than being a clueless noobie once again
This man knows.
I absolutely agree. I think they shouldn't have kept quiet about a lot of the things they have revealed.
Besides the official announcement, without going into all the details, I've been keeping away from spoilers - just want to have fun.
gonna be fun figuring builds out
I enjoy seeing unique items teasers and little things like that, but I cannot get behind the people doing detailed "theorycrafting" and whatnot for "builds" in a game that isn't even out yet.
I fell the same way, but it extends to the beta. Playing a year long beta will lead to a totally solved game on full release.
True and real, have fun as well. It's going to be a blast seing all the cool new shit in person.
its weird to me how common the sentiment of "build guides suck we just wanna make our own builds and have fun" and simultaneously ubiquitous build guide use is. I'm sure to some extent its two separate camps of players, but it feels like the second build guides exist lots of players assume they HAVE to use them. no one is putting a gun upto your head and forcing you to follow a guide. I have nearly 2000 hours in poe 1, i have played almost exclusively ssf that entire time, and i have never once started a build by going "welp, time to open up a guide and do everything they say to do"
I'm actively trying to avoid any videos that do not contain a PoE dev. I don't want anything spoiled.
Great video. I'm definitely going in blind.
Based mathil out here still sane, great advice
Same. I was blown away by the endgame reveal and now I don't want to know any more. I just wanna play. 😅
I haven't engaged with anything poe2 related. Didn't even watch the big announcement stream. Can't wait to get my access key and go in as blind as I can :)
I mean people are just excited, you can't really stop them. Just focus on yourselfs guys =)
Right? Right....?
Honestly great message, don't power game your first character.
THAT’S MY FOR FUN PLAYER GOOOOAAAAAT
I've been taking this approach to it so far, I know almost nothing about the game at all, I didn't even watch the reveal because I want to go into the EA release almost completely blind.
The only information I''ve seen at all is the ascendancy classes, and only because there are a lot of them, they are pretty important, and you dont get to see them in-game until you've already committed to a character. Even then I've been avoiding the videos of people breaking down what they think is going to be good, and have just decided I want to play the gemling themed Merc class bc it looks really cool flavor-wise
That's a solid, sane advice.
My favourite build in poe is the one I created, it was so much fun trying solving the game alone
I'm so excited to know nothing. I've been avoiding all planning.
Best POE 2 video so far
Based Mathil take as usual, well said man!
Not people already making build guides... :-()
I think GGG really wants us to enjoy learning about all the new mechanics and options.
Too late. I've already fully min/maxed POE2 and have started theorycrafting my first PoE3 build for 2036.
You're asking the impossible, PoE players will solve it as soon as they can
I've been playing this game since day one of closed beta and there's absolutely 0% chance I am big-brained enough to solve anything in poe2.
My plan is to see how long I can avoid watching guides and builds, or infodumps about what's good and what's trash. I'll just play what looks fun and make it as good as it can be.
I know what class I want to play, and that's enough for me at release. I'll copy a build for later characters.
