Indeed it's Japanese written on Ash's jacket. The back is in katakana and reads "chiimu shadou", which translates as "team shadow", and the sleeves are written in kanji and read "kage koukou" which translates as "shadow highschool"

To be fair, the amount of boy dolls released sort of shows the reality in art schools lol. There was 25 students in my group, and there where only 3 boys.

Reminds me of that promotional video for the Barbie movie where the cast were dressing up Barbies and they all questioned how they had the dexterity to do this as kids. They concluded that they managed it because they didn’t have anything else to do
I loved that they had a boy doll. They are so infrequently included.
Ash's look is definitely inspired by some of the Harajuku fashion from Japan... can't translate the characters for you, but I recognize the style.
My phone’s translate app says it’s “Team Shadow” which I’m totally loving
I knew the character for shadow and the other was familiar, but I'm a super weeb so... -_-'
And April, if he's on the baseball team as his style implies that translation makes total sense.

I really have issue with Lunas first "Tin-woman" outfit. She looks like she could clink and clank as she walks. In her first episode given how dressed up Shanelle and Natasha where you could guess maybe she was in front of the lens as well as behind. That is not an every day practical outfit. Put her in her second outfit for the show damn it she looks so good.
I like how interesting she looks in the first outfit and on display in it, but you are right it's not an everyday look at all.
Lunas outfit is supposed to be the opposite of Sunny's no rain no rainbow runway look where she looks like she's wearing an umbrella. I don't like it either but I can understand the creative direction
I never liked Luna's first outfit either. As soon as I got her I changed her clothes because I love that rose gold jacket!
I really like his whole second outfit, but I agree that the leggins are difficult to put on and the velcro doesn't close properly. Only the shorts keep it close. Ash's first outfit pants are especially nice on my Jett Dawson with her black and white hoodie plus her shoes. I was lucky to get my Ash in store and chose the most flawless one. Others had wonky hair lines or glue on the face. Even my Ash has some very light smudges on his forehead only to be seen against the light. All in all he is my favourite boy from RH. I bought Shanelle Onyx and Natasha Zima cause I love the contrast. I switched their clothes and loooove the look
I only bought those two also! They look beautiful together. I heard a lot of people had problems with yellow tones on Natasha's clothing but mine looked fine. How was yours?

These I like to call "Greyscale high" since they're not exactly reminiscent to their true names. I like the quality of them though, the details are clean.
Wonder if Ash's breeks were designed with the pointed foot in mind rather than his flat feet 🤔

You actually bring up an amazing point about the hair. I really want Ash because I love male dolls but I'm really disappointed that he has the same hair as River, the first Rainbow High boy. Just as one of the girls would be amazing with short hair, I think a boy with long hair would be so cool. (says the guy with long hair)... I only have Heather Grayson so far because Shadow High is hard to come by in Germany but I actually managed to get Lila and Delilah (that rolls off the tongue) from Rainbow High series 4 which are both so incredibly beautiful. Especially Delilah, she's wearing glasses 🥰
Every one of these Shadow High dolls is beautiful; it's a darn shame that the quality isn't there for some of the clothing. A little something wrong once in a while is to be expected, but a seam not sewn from the crotch to just above the knee is unacceptable. I would still buy them; it's just disappointing. Thank you, Jen, for another great video!

My Ash's shirt doesn't have those brown burn looking marks where yours did but the seam on the side does have a brown edge similar to that. But bonus- my Ash came without the patches on his pants, yay quality control.
It also took me a solid 5 minutes to put him into his second pair of shoes. Overall though I tend to like these Shadow High over most of my Rainbow High dolls, with the exception of Lily Cheng which is my fav RH doll to date.
Oh so maybe they don't use heat to cut the fabric 🤔 I wonder what all that was about then. Wait what you don't have the patches!!! That's a pretty big missing detail!

I love Ash but those pants are indeed a FASHION, CONCEPT AND EXECUTION NIGHTMARE. There's the trick of a small piece of plastic, like in plastic bag to wear those things in dolls (it works with long sleeved shirts for dolls without removable hands) but i doubt it'd work here ;-;
The white T-shirt for me had yellow/brown stains on the inside too. I thought it looked like fake tan stains 😂

Jen, this was exactly my experience with those terrible pants! It took me 20+ minutes of fighting them because I didn’t want them to rip. It was so horrible, and I ended up taking them back off because I liked his other pants better. It’s much easier taking them off than putting them on, it’s so terrible.
Also, those stupid jibbers ruined my space shirt, too, and I also didn’t notice any burn marks inside of it when I was lamenting their loss. I ended up making his shadow triangle shirt into a crop top because it covered up too much of his lovely pants.
Omgosh I'm so sorry. Seems like we have a lot of similar issues which is a real shame. I agree the black top covers a bit more of his pants than I like. Now that you pointed it out lol.
I love the concept of the Shadow High Dolls!!! Although I have to remind myself that they are meant to be in grayscale. Everytime I watch videos of them. Hihihihihi 💗💗💗💗💗

The only part that bothers me is the established 2022. It makes sense from the doll marketing standpoint, but it really limits the lore that I find very intriguing about these dolls. It emplies that the school had only existed for 5 or 6 months, which really limits any chance at creating a further depth of character to show a past that really shows their pride in SH, and rivalry with RH. I mean I feel real stupid for being so petty, but I really love backstories.
Also just to be clear the 2022 alone is cool, it's just on Ash the added est. is what I'm referring too. I know nitpicky.
No you know what I get it and now I don't feel so weird for having a similar thought when I treat he'd and edited the footage. I am so glad you love backstories and feel that the Est. Portion sorta ruins it. Like you said it limits the history for pride in that school. How could this kids grow up striving to get into this amazing Shadow High school that never existed. Now I wish I had brought it up so we could have more people thinking about this. LOL then it can drive them crazy too. If I see Est. 2022 again I'll try to remember next time. 🤞🤣

I have an Ash and I refuse to put him in the second outfit's bottoms because I will never accept leggings + shorts as a valid fashion choice. I'm happy to see my decision validated.
My mum agrees with you there because I have been told repeatedly how "silly" I looked when I would wear my favourite white coverall shorts with leggings.... typically super bright colours ... but I did that because the shorts were too short....his shorts aren't super short so personally I would dress him in just the shorts and the astronaut t-shirt
it's more of a sports thing than a fashion. you see it a lot when athletes play during cold weather. usually soccer, football, sometimes basketball, baseball even

So Nicole is my number one absolute favourite RH doll, I just think she's so beautiful!! The absolute pride of my collection! I remember pre-ordering her with priority shipping and she got to me on the actual day of release! (That was hilarious because it was the 13th, and she has the number 13 on her second outfit haha)
And I actually bought my Ash in stores! Got the most perfect one on the shelf and he's a gorgeous doll honestly. My only RH boy and I couldn't be happier. I will say his shoes are a little stiff, but I have no issue with the leggings or anything. I always feel like I'm gonna snap his leg clean off when I tug off the shoes, but that's a problem with most fashion dolls really. I remember years and years ago I actually broke a Monster High doll leg clean off by tugging off the knee-high boots, they were stiff as a rock!
Honestly I'm thrilled with my Shadow High dolls (I kinda want Luna too, she looks like a lil alien!), they're right in front as the pride of my collection!

Nicole Steele is my favorite too! She may be the only one of them I get. I just can't afford everything Rainbow High has out there.
A fun thing was that my Ashes skinny pants fit on my heather doll and she rocks them♥️♥️ I keep Ash in his shorts.

11:45 dude I didn't even realise those pop off, I tried doing that to mine but got scared they'd break and thought they're glued or smth so I removed them by dragging them down like leggings. it was a major pain but they survived, don't think I'll be putting them on on anyone anytime soon tho 😂
I love the Shadow High dolls. I have Heather and the Storm Twins. Veronica is currently my favorite Shadow High doll based on her style and color scheme.
I feel like Luna should have had the same exact hairstyle as Sunny, because they are twins, and her buns look awkwardly sized compared to Sunny's buns. Ash's pants and Luna's Gladiator sandals also seem like questionable pieces of clothing. I cannot imagine how kids are able to change some of these dolls clothes on a daily basis, because certain pieces are just too difficult or delicate to deal with more than once.
Sadly we don't have the twins here in Canada yet but I hope that will change soon. As for the twins. I don't think they need the same hairstyle because they don't have to, but I agree Luna's buns are smaller than Sunny's making them seem so strange.
As for the shoes, luckily with a dab if clear tacky glue I popped the tab into the hole and it doesn't look broken so that's good and I fixed Ash's pants. Kids will not be doing this problem free that's for sure.
I want to see the new hair style on Ash when you do it.

I loved Ash, and I did not like the 2nd outfit. I have it stored in my doll accessories (labeled of course so I don't forget who it is for).
I ended up getting all the dolls although I wished I skipped on Luna and Natasha. Luna was originally one of my four favs but when I got her, she went to last. Heather took her place. My four favs are Shanelle (the most beautiful IMO 😍), Ash, and Nicole tied for second. Heather took Luna's place as fourth. I love that you're still reviewing these dolls since the new ones have been getting so much attention, these seemed to lost the lime light somewhat.
I think the company didn't I've the SH line enough time before dropping the new S4 line. I think it was to remain on everyone's minds as monster High drops were being hyped. They gotta stay relevant 🤣

Those stocking shoes remind me of the "boot socks" I had as a kid in the 70s. Basically, crinkly (faux alligator maybe?) vinyl socks with the sole being normal sock. If paired with similar color shoes, made them look like boots. I had red ones and wore with red and blue saddle shoes, thinking I was so cool.
Oh wow that sounds interesting probably something I'd have wanted.
So, I managed to pause the video and copy the Japanese characters from Ash's jacket in my notebook (as well as I can, but I've never learned the language), used google translate (thank goodness there is a "handwriting" function available for the Asian languages) and these are the translations:
"暗影" means "Shadow",
"チームシャドウ" means "Team shadow" (also, this phrase is everywhere on his clothes, eg. on his second t-shirt or his first pants),
"影育校" means "Shadow school"
I find it interesting that they used (I think) hiragana for some words and kanji for others. I could infer the shadow and shadow school from my knowledge of Chinese, but I don't know enough about Japanese to know how much the hanzi remained the same in kanji and is still used for words like school or shadow. I find myself wanting to go down that rabbit hole!

Why was the boy the only one to get an ankle joint? I’m more of a fan of my Barbies; I have the original wheelchair Barbie and both the first wheelchair Barbie and the fashion wheelchair Barbie. Their articulation is brilliant. I also recently got the Barbie that has the guided meditations and I love her
the made to move barbies are awesome. i wish they would use that body for more of there dolls or even just give them working knees. still a really cool doll line tho. :)
Yeah I love the wheel chair Barbie's and I dunno why only the males get ankles for RH and SH but it's annoying.
If you notice, Nicole's right pocket also had some sewing issues like the velcro did. Such a shame because the second jacket is my favorite jacket she has.
I had an extra piece of thread there but it wasn't attached it was sorta looped and looked like a fubbed stitch but when I touched it, it came off. I was worried at first.
Try taking an iron over the holes in the white shirt. Don't melt it! But heat will shrink holes.

I hate Luna’s first look. I know a lot of people are love or hate her first look. Second is cute but plain. I see your friend made a Raven inspired doll from DC. I knew you were going to break the second shoe. Second Kanji is Shadow. Not sure what the first is. I looked up school and high (actually secondary school) and its not really there. I don’t think it means school at all.

Definitely more boys and toss in a true tomboy girl while they're at it! Not the, "Oh I play sports so I'm a tomboy! So what if I have girly pigtails down to my knees that would take hours to style and plenty of makeup!" *girly giggle* I mean a real, basically no makeup (as little as you can do for a doll anyway), pixie cut or something short and sassy, girl in gender nonspecific clothing, and not men's styles cut for women that's insulting.
They did those pants wrong...they designed them but obviously never tested them. You HAVE to use a zigzag stitch for those tight fitting garments, even if the fabric is stretchy! And sometimes you have to add a little bulk to your seams to hold that stitch, but otherwise the whole garment is trash if it can't fit on the doll. Just look at the stitching inside underwear waistbands and leg holes; so much zigzag.
Yes!!! I second this doll idea!! As for the zig zag stitch I don't know much about sewing but I think I remember hearing a similar statement in regards to stretchy fabrics so yeah they should probably have used that and tested the dang pants .
The Japanese text says "Chiimu Shadou", or Team Shadow.
At least that is what the katakana says on the jacket and the pants - the Kanji goes a little fast for me to read.

You can heat the shoes with a hairdryer or a heating pad, they will go off easier! 😍😃💕👍🏼
You and the boy dolls black trousers.Can you imagine a child having that as a present.How many times Mum or Dad would have to go through that?.Sure not child friendly.They should check the pieces of clothing on the dolls regular to prevent this…But all in all I like these dolls .Makes me wonder exactly how many are brought by collectors or for children?children usually like a bit of colour .But I love the new eyes and they are slightly smaller too.The makeup on these is beautiful too .But a lot are saying that the rooting of the hair on the newer dolls is not as thick and there are rows and rows missing when they check as you do..it’s a shame cutting back on the quality.Everything is expensive and although they are considered just dolls by the producers Children and adults do have high standards when it comes to dolls..I remember how much I loved my Sindy and had her until I returned home from NZ.But sadly when my crates came it and another childhood doll was missing .But it shows how much dolls mean to girls. It wasn’t 100% but it was much better than it was. I assumed it was some kind of marking pastel/chalk but after you said heat cut I’m not sure. He was actually the first doll (aka not a boy aimed action figure) I’ve ever purchased. I’m one of those adults that just likes toys and when I saw him on your channel I thought he/and the entire shadow line were so unique and I had to get him.

Can we just talk about how the boy DOLL got so many pockets! Both outfits had pockets! The girl dolls didn't get any real pockets. Why? Why? What do girls want? Cheese and pockets!
i am a fan of Nicole, agree on a lot of things. the looks are cute, but the fabrics have been a miss or the execution of how they are made. i am mostly disappointed on how Nicole's hair, (when i was looking for her) the dolls of her. had looser curls then the one you found. i am not great on doing doll hair. so i am scared to damage her.
Jay's video is a great one to watch to see how he got full nice curls pretty easily. I'd say give it a watch and maybe you will feel a bit more confident ☺️❤️
Not a fan of the fake jackets that do up in the back. None of the clothes on these dolls has appealed to me. Too bad, since I like the greyscale idea.

I’m really disappointed with my Ash he’s missing half his hair on one side like they cut his hair underneath the glued down hair. They literally cut his hair and then just combed it back and left it. I’m going to write them about it.

As Someone who collects Boy dolls. Yes it would be great for Rainbow to have more, But not just that Actually TRYING to make them different. Cuz Ash and the 1st Boy have the same hair and face, And very similar base ideas for there outfits. At least the Girls are mostly unique. But I’d love to see new male face sculpts
