  • I had the pleasure of checking out the brand new 2022 RGTs in the Ibanez kitchen at Meinl. These are seriously great guitars and there is no doubt in my mind that, once available, they will be flying off the shelves.

    Ibanez model names are actually easy to understand once you know the rules, you can divide them in 2: The letters and the numbers, the rest just stand for specs like the FX (Fixed Bridge), M (Maple Fingerboard), . Letters behind the numbers stand for the guitar type and numbers stand for the configuration. For example:
    RGA: RG Arched
    RGD: RG Drop (Cause RGD was ment for drop tuning)
    RGR: RG Reverse
    RGT: RG Thru-neck
    RGIB / RGIXL : RG Ironlabel Baritone / RG Ironlabel XL (which means the same)
    And numbers go like this, first 1 or 2 numbers are usually the series of the guitar. When its only one number (or 3 numbers in total, except for some prestige models like the RG652, the RGA420 or the RGT220) then youre refering at Standard or Non Prestige series, but when it is 2 numbers (or 4 numbers in total except for the RG15271, which is the most fucked up name in the entire brand) youre refering at premium and prestige series (Except for the AZ series) usually you'd look for the last 2 numbers, but there are some rare exceptions like the prestige series introduced in 2012 that only has 3 numbers in the name, in that case you would only look at the last number. For example:
    **20 - **2: HH configuration, like the RG3120 or the RG652.
    **21: It means HH config with a fixed bridge, just like the rg7621 or the RG321. This doesnt apply to the Ibanez 652, because they got rid of the last number, instead they used FX. It also doesnt apply to the old RG15271 because they fucked up so bad with the name.
    **27: When prestige series were introduced it meant HH configuration and 7 string, just like the RGD3127 (which I have and I love)
    **28: HH conf 8 string. This was introduced with the RG2228, the first 8 string guitar they produced, and its still being used in the RG5328, which is a prestige 8 string model.
    **40: HSS with a pickguard. This doesnt apply to the old ibanez 540s, because they were made before this numbers started being used as a standard configuration.
    **50 - **5: HSH configuration with a pickguard like the RG1550 or the RG655
    **51: HSH configuration with a pickguard and a fixed bridge, like the old RG1551, which was one of the first prestige models
    **60: HSS config, like the rg760 or the SA360.
    **61: HSS config with a fixed bridge. Just like the hew SEW761
    **70**80 - **7. HSH configuration. Back in the late 90s They used to have the **80 models, like the RG3180 or the RG580, which were HSH models with slightly better specs than the models of the same serie that had a 70 in their name, but nowadays they dont do that anymore, its just **70 or 7 in the case of the prestige rg657.

      @@TheShinyShow Personally, I like Charvel's approach where you don't have to remember numbers and it's just FR = Floyd Rose, MJ = Made in Japan, HH = dual humbuckers, but yeah arbitrary names like "standard", "studio" or "special" are more confusing to me. At least the Ibanez names are concise.

    Grabbed myself the non-wiggly one a while back. Super light, lovely looks, great tuning stability, buttery smooth neck. No sharp frets anywhere, and the locking tuners are such a nice touch. Well worth the money if you ask me, (a non-professional musician).

      Great pickups and great specs. It's just, why does it have to look like that? Oh well. I can't find a good superstrat with stainless steel frets that doesn't look like some gooner metal band from 2007 would be playing it. I also don't understand all this burl I'm seeing nowadays. It looks like a jewelry box on my grandma's dresser, or maybe the cozy interior of a ski lodge. And then it has huge abalone and gold hardware like it's an Artcore jazz box. Ibanez makes great, generously spec'd guitars that are ugly as sin, as does Schecter.

    I just got my RGT1270pb. It plays fantastic. The fretwork on the stainless frets is perfect. The workmanship overall is on par with my Prestige RG5120m. If I saw a Prestige logo on it, I wouldn’t question it. Im not super impressed with the pickups, but I have a set of Fishman Tosin Abasi pickups ready to go in. Overall, it’s an incredible guitar and also an incredible value. Everything about it is pro quality.

    I'll be honest, I don't mind the Ibanez naming scheme. It's takes a bit to learn what the stuff means, but that's true for any brand. Fender renaming their stuff Player, Performer, and Professional doesn't tell me anything unless I look up and memorize the models differences. With Ibanez you can kinda guess what it is even if you don't know what everything means.

    Sinking cavity covers to flush with the body surface can be done with the same tool that roughs or finishes the cavities. That tool, cutting all of those shallow pockets would, at the absolute maximum, using an extremely low feed per tooth for the best surface finish, take two minutes. If using an optimal tool for that application the same smooth surface finish could be done in around 40 seconds. The programming, using CAM software, maybe 5 minutes....
    ... if I took a three minute nap...
    Conversationally programming, depending on system/format, maybe 5 to 7 minutes.
    Flush mounting the cavity covers just looks and feels nicer, more high quality, and is ALWAYS done on our guitars and basses (except a few I built, a few years ago, for a customer who never has them flush mounted).

    I was looking at getting an RG1120PBZ or something similar. After watching many Ibanez reviews, including yours, I decided on the RGT1220PB. As an EVH fan, I'm always looking for that brown sound. 😉 I bought one few months ago, and it's my favorite guitar right now. The feel and sound of the stainless steel especially on the high strings is absolutely amazing. It puts my other guitars to shame - dead spots, always needing polishing, etc. I also have a '98 Peavey Wolfgang and a PRS Custom 24 Floyd. Trust me if you can afford it, get stainless frets. They are so worth it, especially if you play often.

    So these are actually starting to filter into the hands of average joes like me and my buddies; and WE CAN’T PUT THEM DOWN. Maybe it’s the light gauge strings, the 10 way pickups, the lightning fast neck….but the Lead Tones on the RG1220 PB are better than anything I’ve heard in the Ibanez Line. The Most Versatile Axe in my lineup for sure. Freaking DOPE and I’m soooooo glad I found one. Happy Shredding dudes.

    These are pretty expensive for made-in-Indonesia models - only about $100 cheaper than the least expensive Prestige RGs. That being said, the specs are basically as good as it gets. The photos on their site of the fret ends on these guitars look unbelievably smooth for an "import" model. It seems like Ibanez is a lot more adventurous with their MII models than they are with the Prestige lineup.

      Just played a Japanese made RG Prestige. Not sure what you're paying extra for! The fret levelling work was budget level (I take a fret rocker with me to check any guitar I'm thinking of buying). The 3rd & 9th were high, not talking a tiny bit of rocking either. The upper register frets were all over the place.

    • @BenRobsonMusic
      @BenRobsonMusic Рік тому +3

      @@talkychris for what it's worth, i recently bought a Prestige RG (5120m) and the fretwork is fantastic - everything is perfectly level with no dead spots, and I can get the action ridiculously low. I've also played MIJ RGs that had wonky frets, though. Just goes to show that QC can be a mixed bag no matter where the guitar is manufactured!

    Late to the party but regarding C major and E major: In the key of C major, E major can be borrowed from the relative harmonic minor scale (A harmonic minor scale). I'm a music theory noob when it comes to major scales but including the dominant Vth in the minor scale for a V-I cadence (i.e. E major to A minor) is a classic so it makes sense that resolving to the relative major also works well.

    What a nice guitar. What I don’t understand is why does any company build a guitar with Floyd Rose like tremolo systems anymore. They are a hassle to change strings, do a set up, and intonation. When I was a teenager growing up in the 80’s - the guitar king Van Halen made it popular. RIP Ed! Fast forward to today with all the technology why would anyone want the headache of a Floyd Rose. Great video as always and thanks!

    • @GlobalTossPot
      @GlobalTossPot Рік тому +1

      Because some of us still enjoy locking tremolos… they’re really not that much of hassle to set up once you’ve done it a handful of times. People who complain about the setup just over exaggerate it and haven’t done it right or enough. And when they are set up, they’re a joy. Not to mention some players prefer how they feel vs a hard tail.
      If you’re using said guitar with a tremolo with the same tuning and string gauge every string change, it’s a breeze. Obviously if you’re changing tunings often you don’t want to be using only a tremolo equipped guitar. You also have your players who just block the trem and use it for its locking capabilities and the fine tuners.
      Guitar companies have to give options available to everyone

    Was looking at a Schecter Keith Merrow KM-6 for a long time (1799€ atm) , this might be the closest thing and its cheaper aswell.

    PB=Peanut Butter.
    They look stunning and I am sure they are full of RG goodness. Not a huge fan of the block inlays on a superstrat, but of course this is a matter of personal taste. I know these are well made and have two materials in them, but they could at least have shaped them differently. Or replace them with something else entirely. They just give the guitar a weighed-down look and the RGs have always been slick beasts.

    Funny how each model version brings out a different style of playing.
    HH/FR ? Seering Vai-esque leads
    HsH/FR ? some sweet single coil stratty cleans
    HH/HT ? Riff city!
    Which are you...??
    (Me, it's a tie between 1 & 2. If I had to choose right now..? 1. The brown'un).

    They're using the same PU combo as in their j.customs so the sounds were expected... I'm glad, cause I really didn't like their Fusion ones.
    What I'd want to know is if these trems are Ibanezes 'real' Edge-ones or if they're their budget ones. Cause if they are the former, that'd be impressive.

    Anyway a real top, albeit thin, and neck through in the premium range is seriously impressive. In the past I built a few partscasters but today with the stuff brands put out, it really doesn't make sense anymore.

    model = RG
    extra info ( neck thru ) = T (A = arch top, D = sculpted, I = iron label, al = axion, m = maple fb, f = fan fret, etc)
    series = 12 (usually bigger means better)
    pickup & pickguard configuration = 2 HH without pickguard.
    bridge = 0 ( tremolo bridge cos 0 = edge zero) 1= fixed bridge, sometimes nothing = gibraltar
    color /finish name : pbb
    but these change sometimes for different models and submodels, so it's not really consistent

      Actually the F stands for Flamed Maple top. The Fan Fretted models would have MS in the name.

    • @noisedreams659
      @noisedreams659 2 роки тому

      @@dancortes2164 flame maple veneer is FM,
      Qm: quilted maple veneer
      MS = multi scale
      In Iron label F is fanned fret (IF)
      Sometimes M is also mikro, sometimes m is maple fb that's why it's not really always consistent

    Location of the volume knob, which they’ve refused to adapt, sucks a big one. With all that real estate I’m not sure why it’s so close to the bridge pickup. If you try to alternate pick next to the bridge, as many players do, you’ll find that your knuckles whack against the volume knob constantly. Easy fix that Ibanez refuse to do because it’ll hurt their factory efficiency for a minute. I’d rather buy a EBMM.

    Most companies seem to have a sensible marketing short model name for external use, and a stock code full of digits/letters for internal use (SKU etc). I just about get my head round the ibanez series prefix and colour suffix, but the codes in-between are still a complete mystery. 🤦‍♂️
    But on the other hand, Glarry just launched a new 355'ish model called GIZ. Unfortunate homonyms for English speakers 🤣. It must be a minefield to find names that are safe in most languages and haven't been used before.
