good reminders to have a plan for the beginning, middle, and end of the story and improvising the sections in between. Also so true it's easy to forget wide, medium, and tight shots of each story telling piece but makes editing so much better. great stuff! subscribed!

Really amazing info as usual Roo! One question, where do you usually have the climbers storing the main unit of the lavalier mic? I want to upgrade our audio but I’m kinda torn between a system like the one you’re using or something like the dji mic just because it’s easier to place, and not worrying about falling in a wrong way and smash the main unit. I imagine that for rope climbing this is easier to do, but for bouldering I’m not sure if it’s the most comfortable way for the athlete

Stoked you like the video and this is a GREAT question since storing the lav mic can definitely be tricky for some bouldering falls. In a slightly unhelpful answer I'd say it sort of depends what angle you're shooting from. I'm personally against the DJI mic placements on the shirts of the climbers since it's pretty obvious and hard to hide, even if it's perhaps a bit safer. Depending on what type of pants / shorts the climbers are wearing, I'll sometimes put the main Tascam unit in their front pocket to avoid it getting in the way of their falls. I've also heard of somebody hiding in a beanie before which I'm guessing would also work although I've never had to do that myself. I usually like the front pocket placement for bouldering but you can also try it out with some friends or athletes next time you're out there to see what they have to say too since everybody is different. *also, I just heard that the new Tascam DR-10l Pro (coming out around Sep 13th) is able to backup nearly continuously so even if you're unit gets smashed for whatever reason, you're audio recording will be safe. Seems like an epic upgrade from the Tascam DR-10L in case you're looking at new upgrades to your own equipment!
