How do i make my studying school an act of worship? what should be my niyyah while tryng excel in school?
As Salamu Alaykum!
Your intention could be:
A. You are performing excellence in this because Allah has ordained excellence in everything (primary intention that you should have because it's directly related to your relationship with Allah and is the intention that isn't dependent on any external circumstance - it's about excellence for the sake of the virtue simply because Allah loves that virtue).
Shaddad ibn Aws reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah has prescribed excellence in everything. If you have to kill, kill in the best manner. If you have to slaughter, slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife, so his animal is spared of suffering.”
Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1955
Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Muslim
I've heard teachers say one of the potential wisdoms of using killing and slaughtering as examples is because they are lowly things that society often doesn't pay much heed to in terms of HOW we do it (just get it done type of mentality) - but even then, there is an importance given to the HOW in our tradition (i.e. spare the animal of suffering, be intentional about it, be merciful to the animal, see the bigger picture, etc.) - this type of attitude should be applied to EVERYTHING. Excellence for everything - including studying and school work.
B. You want to learn this information to then become more aware of the signs of Allah in the world for yourself and even to be able to teach that to your family and others (Ex. history, science, etc. all have potential to be seen in a perspective that increases your appreication of how Allah created this world and also to learn more about the way Allah created us so you can avoid pitfalls that humanity has fallen into within history).
C. You want to use your eventual degree to get a job and use that money to spend on your children, family, community, and humanity (a form of Sadaqah Jariah).
D. You want to be a role model within the Muslim Ummah and for humanity by showing that Muslims can excel in their school AND also be faithful to their religion.
