Thank you. I'm so glad to revisit this. I met him at a book reading for "All that is" and subsequently had a brief email correspondence with him about the story behind the writing of "Solo faces". There was nothing more intimidating that engaging in a written exchange with such a masterful writer! Tastes are not currently aligned with his choice of subject and oeuvre, but tastes will continue to change. I look forward to him being rediscovered. Lost treasure...
I really appreciate your advocacy of Light Years and Salter. Your video is very findable by anyone searching those two things. Light Years struck me as clearly taking on and extending in it's own way the lyricism of The Great Gatsby. (That may just indicate my limited reference points). Do you agree, and can you suggest anything else that takes on in its own fashion the prose lyricism of The Great Gatsby or Light Years?
You have persuaded me to order Light Years....I am more than halfway through Ha Jin's novel and am already curious about Salter's 😁 . I have one book of Salter's, I picked it up 2 summers ago, (short stories) "Last Night ." I enjoyed it but it wasnt memorable the way you make Light Years sound.....I know I wasn't tossing and turning at night after I read it which is a sign for me...lol...it had no disturbance factor...... I am intrigued with this book you suggest. In your upload on female characters ,you brought up the character, Nedra and her husband's thoughts on her, that inner dialogue was appealing to me...must find out....👍
Light Years is a major work; his short stories are merely good. For me short stories can never achieve the depth and intensity of a novel, and this is especially the case with Salter.
Neil Griffiths I will get back to you after i read it, ordering it tomorrow. I don't know, Ive read some short stories (not enough) that somehow deliver an intensity that some novelists cannot achieve, it seems rare though, maybe that is just me....😁 A friend recently gave me Nella Larsen's "Passing," and her other stories and she managed to tell such a big story, cover a range of subject matters, emotions in hardly any pages. Her story was like the Mike Tyson punch that is disappointing if it happens to quickly, but still perfect in it's delivery....much better than the fight that boringly drags into too many rounds.
they sent my book 3 weeks late!!!! I started another book then finally got Light Years in the mail (i intensely dislike when that happens😒) Im a hundred in, it is very good....is it too early for me to feel more sympathetic towards Viri?
A sport and a pastime is a quote from the Koran. It does not concern sexualiry, but rather expresses "what the life of this world is meant to be as against the greater life to come" -- Burning The Days, James Salter. You don't mention All That Is.
Hey dude you living well, safe? Know that you are missed. Word for word. As expressive as it can be when it conveys with sprinkles of worry. Short sentences. Trying to punch well above its weight to tell - You are cared for..

Light Years is one of my favourites; it deserves every word of your compliment!
Thanks for the video. Do you have any other recommendations for people primarily interested in prose?

Are you still alive? Thanks for this post (7 years late for me)
